This is always what I mention when people poo-poo RT, it makes objects in the game go from looking like a poorly stacked pile of fake 3D objects, into an actual pile of *actual* objects that look grounded and physically present. Another was the floating broken display case or the big desk in the middle of the room, where in rasterized rendering they just look like 3D models awkwardly floating in the air, but with RT they are realistically placed into the world in a way you would actually expect to see in real life.

I disagree. I think the character models are some of the best I've seen but the textures and geometry is clearly lacking. I believe that the game was very carefully tuned to get good fps on weaker hardware.. which is admirable.. but the tradeoff is clearly visible to me(4070 TiSuper on 4k) what I will say is, for the visuals you get.. this game has better visual to performance ratio of anything I have seen. A great compromise to be clear.

Some of the artifacts for example in the Vatican are really good models that look incredible with PT, but you are right that some models like random fruits in Egypt are clearly too low poly for first person. Like you said can't have every asset be that high poly on consoles @60fps. Most texture do actually look really good, the highest mip just loads in way too close to the camera (especially for the memory cost). Looking right down at my feet they look really good but just a few meters away it's 360 land..

PSA: If you’re plagued with stutters and frame pacing issues, try rolling back the driver to 566.14! This worked so beautifully for my 4080S rig. The current 566.36 was a horrible stutterfest unless I sacrificed so many settings, and I though it was just a super heavy game, but after rolling back it is silky buttery smooth 60+fps, and zero issues with FG, and Full RT 🙂

4070ti here! I have experimented with the settings and unlike in Cyberpunk and Alan Wake 2 Path Tracing isn't really a feasible option due to Nvidia giving us 4GB less VRAM than we should have had! This game would have easily had 1440p truly maxed out if the card had that extra VRAM. I'll carry on playing supreme settings and DLAA

You have no idea how much I cursed Nvidia when playing this game with full RT on my 4070ti. Even though I am managing the vram and getting good fps, but the vram issue does creep in with textures not loading some times, and literall assets taking ages to load in because of vram plus I get this weird shadow flickering with the combination of vegetation animation quality and full RT. So ya, this card's tremendous 1440p capabilities are being murdered by the 12gb vram. Unbelievable!

Yeah I played through the whole Alan wake 2 with Path tracing on 4070Ti, here I just don't bother, too stuttery and unoptimized at the moment. I believe it will be fixed in future, but for now, playing through the game with PT off, DLAA at 1440p - I get like 100+ fps so I'll take a smooth game over pretty stuttery mess of a game any time.

Actually, turning on the sun shadow alone (or turning on any combination but all 3 of the rt settings) disables default GI in some indoor areas without any replacement. This is a very noticeable visual downgrade in the tomb section in the intro. So the best path tracing settings is either enabling them all or disabling then all.

nvidia recommends that you turn Vegetation Animation Quality to medium if you use path tracing. That will give you solid 60fps also in jungles and clear out all the small frame drops in areas with vegetation.

I want to add that setting the Texture Streaming to anything above Low will basically net similar results as Supreme sans distant objects in certain areas. The best compromise is to MAX all your settings (set texture to medium) on a 4070 class GPU, turn on DLSS Quality & FG. It's much smoother than I had anticipated & if playing on a controller then it is just as responsive as other games. Using medium texture pool ( with no real diff to quality) enables you to max this game out with Path Tracing. Source - My 15h playthrough with 4070 Super at 1440P

This is probably the first game (And comparison video) to make me understand why Ray tracing/Path tracing is a good thing for video games and not a waste. The difference is incredible. The problem is without these sort of videos the difference seems so subtle to notice during normal gameplay or for the casual player. It’s not even really a subtle difference when you see it side by side but for most people I think it will be just that as they won’t be watching comparisons or care that much about it.

My 3080 12GB managed about 30ish FPS in the jungle with FULL RT on with DLSS Quality 1440P. Most of the other areas are between 40ish and 70ish FPS. Given the fact that the game is pretty slow paced I would consider this "okayish". Most of the time you are sneaking anyway. Also: HDR with a good HDR Monitor is a _HUUUUUGE_ boost to the look of the game.

The paged cascading shadow maps behavior seems to have been an issue with the graphics settings for shadow maps not properly responding to higher settings levels. Ever since the RT update came out, this was fixed in the default renderer. I'm not sure why Alex doesn't mention that at all.

I may be misremembering but I think the PT patch added new options that allow for settings the shadow distance higher than before. When I checked the settings after the patch, it was set to medium and setting it higher did clean up the behaviour at least in the museum at the beginning (I am not far in the game so I cannot say if the issue persist in later stages). Game installed after the patch may be correctly setting the level to a higher value than before and thus it is no longer an issue (at least on pc).

i see comments comparing this to uncharted and saying you get the same look with baked lighting, uncharted was one of my fav games, and if you want to see top notch bake lighting, i remember the last level in the beach house such amazing baked lighting, but you can't compare it to the trifecta of raytraced effects. it falls short, the bright parts are not washed out, you don't get specular raytraced reflection which is so obvious on angles coming in and out of corners. also not to mention in order to have perfect baked lighting you need to have a second uv channel which is fine but it falls short when you have small objects causing lots of visible seems and overflow of light across those seems

@@Helifax19 I think path-tracing doesn't feel as transformative in Alan Wake 2 because the non-RT lighting is honestly impressive for what it is. Plus a lot of the game is heavily tinted/shaded various colors and it's largely dim/dark. Agreed on CP2077 though, PT in that game is amazing. To me though it almost feels overdone with all the metal and neon and mirrored reflections everywhere. Indiana Jones has more grounded environments/objects so it feels more realistic (to me at least).

@@vinyfiny Yes, the environments and the material used actually influence the presentation a lot. Yes, in Alan Wake 2 the visual style is darker overall. Only OLED & HDR could help there to better make sense of what you are seeing. PT is used there to great effect as well. However in the day scenes you can see PT working to the same extent as here. Cyberpunk 2077 is "our" futuristic world of neon, glass and steel, so the materials helps a lot as well.

I have a 3070 Ti so can't really run this (I'm pretty sure it's not even an option in the menu for me) but it is really cool and makes me excited to maybe upgrade soon. The extent to which path tracing is an upgrade can feel a bit arbitrary for this game because a lot of the non path-traced effects aren't as good as they could be (particularly shadows like you say,) but it still looks really good even ignoring that in favor of looking at the path traced visuals on their own merit.

If they're going the open world route, I doubt they'll be able to get FULL RT in it... but, Playground Games are masters of optimization. So, maybe they will but only be 30 fps? Luckily, they're not using UE5 and are using their Forza Horizon Engine (forgot what it's called). I've been sick of UE5 games lately, they all tend to look the same and perform terribly with horrible upscaling. UE5 was not ready for these consoles, or even PC (imo).

Still buggy with frame gen not working out of box. You have to manually replace the dlss and dlssg .dll files and disable a few things in the nvidia control panel to get frame gen to work at the same time as hdr and even then it can bug out and stop working

Alex your optimized settings are a godsend! I was able to get the game running on my rog ally X on mostly medium settings at a locked 30fps! Using the dynamic resolution at 900p it's definitely a little soft but still looks absolutely beautiful! I have vram set to 10gb. FSR 3 will be a huge game changer can't wait for it!

I would like you to include more moving shots with greater and somewhat faster movement (no slow pan) in comparisons as they 1. highlight the differences more 2. highlight the problems with each implementation more and 3. are more relevant for the gameplay.

Game runs surprisingly well on my RTX 3080 TI. 1440p, texture streaming at high, Almost full RT, with the exception of reflections, DLSS at quality, it runs *mostly at 50+

3080 ti is a beast not suprised it runs that smooth. im struggling with my 3060 ti, but it runs well with shadows and texture turned down. playing on a ultrawide 1440p oled, looks pretty good.

@@mathias4514 it's quite good. But the official requirement table mentions it's suitable for medium, no full rtx at 1440p at 60fps. So, I did not expect to do this much better than that.

Path tracing is genuinely a game changer for fidelity in lighting. It can totally change a games look and feel. Amazing stuff. I can't wait to see this stuff on console! Maybe next gen! Lol

This game has the best fidelity to performance ratio that i have seen. I run supreme at 4k on 4070 TiSuper. It just works. I do see lower asset quality than with some other games but the performance is worth the tradeoff. Indoors and cities look better than the trees.

With path tracing, most realistic looking graphics ever seen imo. Everything just looks and feels right. I'm able to run it on a 3090 at 4k dlss, capped at 40fps but with Lossless Scaling X2 frame gen so feels like 80fps. I'm also playing on an oled which is the icing on the cake.

3:25 Alex, I know you're a big... enthusiast on stuff only the top 2% can use when playing, but this is inexcusable. Those shadows are legit on par with 2011 X360 games. There's no excuse for the RT Off Shadows to look like this, God of War from 2018 did it better, RDR2 from 2018 did it better, what is happening with games nowadays?

I agree, feels like a push from Nvidia, weirdly there is no option in the dev console to increase resolution or push out the cascades. LOD Distance on the other hand is there

@@AngryApple yeah, gta 5 has an option for shadows with nvidia technology, those shadows looks like nowadays rt shadows, gets softer with distance, you can get a blurry shadow moving in real time from a object 10 meters away over the sharp shadow of your character, no rt, just developers doing their job using that time hardware. Nvidia pcss i think was called, i cant say how performant those were, but they did it without raytracing in 2014, how in the hell shadows look so bad in 2024, inexcusable.

@@nicolass4296 Percentage Closer Soft Shadows, yeah its a nice algorithm thars quite performant and isnt even tied to Nvidia, they just developed this algorithm. Heck this algorithm even runs in the Web without Compute Shaders. Raytracing has its benefits but even here in Indiana Jones its an excuse for laziness, mostly static scenes where a good baked solution would do a better and cheaper result...

Man. I was really enjoying this-almost salivating at the thought of turning on Full RT just as soon as the video ended-but then I got to the performance section, where Alex said 8GB GPUs don’t even have the option. Alas! The game is still gorgeous as is, and perhaps in the future I’ll get a new rig that can make use of it.

I feel like most of the difference is the game being designed around Path Tracing, rather than it necessarily being required to gain that look. Reminds me of Doom 3 with bump mapping off, you can tell it wasn't designed with it being off in mind.

Not really for the performance, there are many games out there that look as good or even better with much better performance. Needing RTX 4090 to make game look good is not big achievement at all. This Ray Tracing just straight up murders all the performance, you can't even reach 60 fps on native 4k with RTX 4090 when full Path Tracing enabled

the human eye cant really notice HDR outside of the artificial brightness saturated contrast hue that it gives off. I can see all the color range already without needing an HDR panel. Its a huge PR marketing bullshit gimmick that so many people get baited by it. In fact increasing the brightness suddenly is bad for your eyes

Why is it that I have a 4090 and I still get 20-40 fps on maxed out settings. This game is worst optimized than Alan Wake and Cyberpunk put together. I also got lucky and didn’t have a bad copy when cyberpunk first came out. I’ve just been so disappointed with how this game runs on my card when I don’t have these issues even on more demanding games.

I see a lot of noise even in the full ray tracing, especially when you look at the shadows or GI relatively up-close. Noise is still a big issue with modern real-time ray tracing in games (even with RR on).

I run the game on a 4070 super @1440p with a 7700x. I use the max RT with Texture Pool Size set to Medium, DLSS Quality and DLSS Frame Gen. The game looks and runs amazing, and I haven't noticed the issue with lower Texture Poll Size that you mentioned in your previous video on this. I'm only in the Vatican area, and if I notice any issue I might change settings. But as I'm writing this, I'm happy with these settings.

Great video and awesome comparisons. It truly is a great looking game and just walking around the beautify crafted world is a amazing. I've been to some of the ingame locations myself and its striking how true to life some of the vistas are! I have the exact same setup - 7800x3d with a rtx4070 on a 1440p 165hz monitor. I opted out to lower the rest of the settings (like hair quality, water quality etc) down a notch, but enable all the rt settings. With DLSS on Balanced i get a good 70+ fps and if I enable frame gen (it takes more vram so in that case the texture pool has to be lowered too) Im in the 100s of fps

No mention of the game arbitrarily locking Full RT to only Nvidia GPUs. I was holding out to watch your coverage to see if maybe the reason was that the game forces some Nvidia exclusive RT feature like DLSS 3.5, but from the sounds of it, theres literally zero reason why AMD and Intel GPUs shouldn't be able to at least turn on the full RT setting apart from this being an arbitrary vendor lock. Pretty blatant Nvidia sponsorship bs imo, and dare I say a double standard to not even mention it coming from the same channel that made such a big deal out of FSR-only AMD sponsored titles.

I'm betting RT AMD support is coming with the FSR patch. There's zero reason to let you enable RT without upscaling or frame gen being options. I'm playing at Supreme quality with AFMF2 in the drivers and it runs and looks great.

It breaks whenever HDR is involved. With it off, it works without issue, although if you still want it on, Auto-HDR is still way better than the HDR implemented with most games. If it's still a problem, just restart the game a few times and try turning off and on Frame-Gen. It'll work eventually with HDR on.

@@jorge69696 Temporal Input: RR can use information from previous frames, much like TAA. Spatial Input: RR combines data across the frame and scene to refine its predictions. AI-Powered Models: Unlike traditional TAA or denoising techniques, RR uses neural networks trained on high-quality ray-traced data. spatial can be done with normal taa with motion vectors, im a bit of an expert lol, the neural network only defines the model that the temporal data aligns by, you dont even need to have an rtx card if you code differently

For those concerned that the game doesn't look good enough without full RT - I'm usually a PC over console kind of person for this kind of game (Cyberpunk feels like a very different experience on my 4070ti vs xbox for instance) but I've been playing the game solely on the Xbox Series X and have been very impressed with how good the game looks and runs, producing many a "wow moment". Full RT is just an icing on the cake - I'm looking forward to trying the game out on PC eventually though as the enhanced lighting looks great!

The non RT version are just bad optimization i bet. you can bake gi. you can increase cascade shadow res a bit. and you can bake better cubemaps for the glasses. just a lil bit of effort. but they just decide lets use RT on everything

This game is really something special. I'm an oldie and kept thinking to myself how they really don't make games like this anymore and it was wild they let this have a full AAA budget
