Dude so Monday I bought (4) 8TB drives from my local Wal-Mart that I planned to shuck and add to the 20 I already have in my farm. Got home and found out they had been shucked, a small drive put in its place, and then returned to Wal-Mart. I was irritated to say the least but didn't have any issue getting my money back from Wal-Mart.

Exact same thing happened to me back in May! I got 2 scammed drives out of 12 I found at various walmarts, and aside from the long line the return was no problem also. I told them dont put those back out, but I am about 90% certain that they did. Glad you got your money back without issue. The ones I bought that had been already shucked were not behind a glass case, which should have clued me off.

Had a power bump during a storm burned the pcb on 3 seagate externals. They dont warranty that. Sent them out to northridgefix(has a youtube channel) hopefully he can do a bios swap. Only 32 tb of plots im more bummed about dead drives-they were less than 30days old from manufacture date

@@DigitalSpaceport 2 local Wal-Marts one has them behind glass the other just has security locks on them individually. Got 2 from each Wal-Mart and they were all shucked. If it doesn't have the plastic wrap on it anymore I'm not buying it.

My wallie worlds switched from WD's to Seagates in early june and the Seagates are plastic sealed. Have not seen them in stock in some time however locally :( Seeing 14Tb drives come back to normal pricing however has me feeling good!

Hi, I removed my Seagate it won't work as an external drive, it would only work as an internal drive. With Western Digital shucked drives there is a tape trick, wherein you tap the 3rd pin (a contact) of the power connector to make it work as an external drive. Would you know of a tape trick for the Seagate? Thank you.

I've been wondering if I should be formatting my drives with larger cluster sizes. Do we know if drive cluster size makes a difference in performance r/w to storage and/or possibly on lookup times?

It has been widly reported 64K size clusters are desirable. I know going with 4K or lower (4K is default in windows) would probably hurt, but I am unaware of how this number 64K size was discovered. In windows it probably has little effect, in linux it very likely might minorly and probably depends on the filesystem in use and the data written. The answer is probably in the smallest chunk size data block written in a sustained burst, which I am not aware if that number is known. That is from some other knowledge I have about tuning a filesystem for mysql transactions of fixed sizes.

I cant say for sure 100% as I dont have any synology gear, but It shouldnt present a problem. Once shucked it is the same as their bare drive offering.

@@DaveFlash I have not seen that design but if its skin looks the same on the outside the tabs might be in the same spot. I cant really advise on something ive never seen sorry.
