Thanks for bringing attention to this. Manufacturers need to step up their quality control. The only way they will is if the consumers no longer tolerate these defects. I had to return two 85 inch qn90as for dse and dead pixels.

I recently had a Hisense U7QF that had a really bad case of DSE in one portion of the TV. It was so distracting that I ended up exchanging it and the new panel is so far so good to my eye. The returns process was really easy and fuss free at least from my experience with Hisense so I'd recommend it if you can.

I have to at least give Hisense credit for their customer service. They sent a technician to my friend's apartment to completely replace the TV panel that was faulty after about 1 month of purchase from Best Buy. Zero issues with the TV so far after nearly 1 year of usage. 👍

Just tried the test images on my Sony 77A80J, and it looks quite good. Not perfect mind you, but nevertheless quite good. That being said, many of us who regularly view these expensive large display panel televisions don’t have perfect vision anyway. For example, I have myopia and astigmatism, corrected with lenses, but still have significant issues with vitreous floaters… which can appear like “migrating dirty screen effect” at times! I guess my point is that nothing is perfect… And even if the screen were absolutely perfect, our eyes may not be capable of perceiving that perfection. As my dear old dad used to say, “it would look good to a blind man“.

To me… DSE is far more bothersome than blooming. The new LED TVs have gotten so good at minimizing blooming that it is not all that noticeable in most scenarios. However, DSE varies unit by unit and is a total crapshoot. Unfortunately, some manufacturers don’t even see this as an issue even on their high end models.

I noticed DSE (vertical bands) on my 2018 TCL 6-series right away watching a hockey game. But it wasn't bad enough for me to return it. I was and still am very happy with the overall performance of the set. My 2016 Sony 930D, however, has minimal DSE in the corners. Sony quality, at least in their premium sets, wins out every time.

I’m shopping for a tv now after 14 years with a Panasonic plasma. I bought an oled because reviewers go on about their black levels much like what they said about plasma’s back in the day. I remember being blown away by my plasma when I set it up. Well….I don’t like the picture on the Sony oled I bought. Even after adjusting the settings the display is just too dim. It looks horrible to my eyes. It’s going back to the store. Now researching mini led’s I come upon this issue. At this point I’m considering buying an Hisense mini led for half the price of the oled and hoping better technology is on the way.

When I bought my LG CX in 2020 I was shocked by the initial DSE. I thought I had gotten scammed for a used or floor model but I quickly realized I had to “warm up” the panel by running it for a few hours and then run the pixel refresher mode to clean it up. After that, it was perfect.

I was worried about OLED burn in as I use it for a monitor (but from the bed). So I bought a LED panel one from Philips, and it has slight DSE, but you really gotta look for it. Overall satisfied and accepted that there is no perfect TV, I'll be more aware next time. I just don't know how realistic it is to return a biga$$ TV, I mean the unboxing an installation was such a chore in itself. I don't necessarily want to minmax it and pull the lever to get another one, and another... So many things could go wrong. If I deem it acceptable might as well just stick with it. I mean I did minmax my monitor but that's different and is used for work, I was hunting for bad pixels and there was in-store unboxing of several until we found a perfect one. That's a bit unreasonable for TVs (store employees will surely hate you for making them unbox and exhaustively several TVs that look perfectly good for the average person but you are nitpicking about a bad pixel you will not even see from over 1.5-2m distance or a DSE you didn't know exists before this video :D). Or with infinie money order 10 different models, test them all in your home, then return the bottom 9 with a courier? They'll just love you. Realize TVs used to be black and white and bulky in terms of depth. Nowadays they are far more brilliant than most people's eyes have ever seen. After seeing how crappy TVs are set up in hotels, and at non-TV-enthusiastic people's homes, with wtf/default settings... the fact that we care even a tiny bit about picture quality to notice flaws means we pay attention and are already better off. If it's not that annoying, just be happy with it :)

Thanks Caleb. I can’t say I wasn’t warned. NOW I know I should’ve skipped this video. But it’s early on a Saturday morning, so I decided to played your “can you see the dirty screen” game. The first few were not very obvious. Then I noticed a spot on one of a colored panels! Great, I think. I‘ve learned something important, I think. I’m going to be ready to check out the screen on a new TV I hope to buy later this year! I think. For several fleeting moments, I’m very proud of myself! The next color flashed on screen and the “pinkish” mark was still there. Hummm. A the third test panel arrived, and the very light, pinkish hue is still there. WHAT! Calm down. I’ll just clean the screen and it will disappear. Nope. I’ll never look at this iPad mini the same way ever again. The “pink splash” will always be on the screen. Right now, it’s on the keyboard while I type. It’s on and between the top corners of the h and j keys as I type this note. It hasn’t bleed on the “u” key, yet. But I’m sure I’ll know the moment it does, because I seriously don’t think I’ll ever “unsee” this again! I swear it wasn’t there yesterday, or earlier today when I watched subwoofer reviews on KZbin. I’m resigning myself to months or years of a growing pinkish hue splash, emanating from my iPad mini. 🤦‍♂️. I suppose my only real hope is Apple announcing an unanticipated upgraded iPad mini (@ a super low price) during next week’s Apple Spring event. Right. Pigs will fly first. Caleb, can you do a video of how to put toothpaste back into the tube? Yea, I know. That’s not gonna happen either.

Problems due to age can be the LEDs going bad. This is repairable, though substantial. Symptoms include dark areas all the time, also they can go purple or lose lenses, looking like there's a light inside. NON-backlight problems include LCD "the glass" aging which might look dark and bruised in areas only on dark scenes.

My old TV has severe DSE (If that is indeed what it is) it looks like dirty water was dripped down the front of the screen and dripped down. It got worse over time. Then there would be very bright streaks with the very dark streaks. Then recently I moved to a new house. I transported my TV in the trunk, wrapped in a blanket. Then I wiped the dust off the back of the TV and plugged it in. The streaks are mostly gone, but they have now changed to being only on the bottom half of the screen, and look like dirty smudges. It looks like someone took a dirty rag to the front of the screen and wiped it up and down, then side to side. Honestly, I think it might be a slight improvement. I'm wondering if dust/dirt getting into the vents in the back could be having some effect. I am tempted the wipe the vents again, this time with a Q-Tip & alcohol (while the TV is off/unplugged of course). But I hesitate because the state of my screen is slightly better now than all the years before, what if this just makes it worse? All I know is, wiping the front of the screen has no effect.

I noticed some severe DSE (horizontal banding) on my 55" Hisense U7QF (H8G equivalent panel I believe). I tried to exchange it within a week of purchase, but the store I bought it wouldn't budge. So I'm stuck with it now. I don't see it as much in regular content, but since buying an Xbox I notice it a lot on the Xbox menus. It's also very apparent in vertical panning shots. FACT: And that is why we should NOT be spending lots of money on these "High-End" TV sets that will just ultimately end up getting "Dirty Screen Effect" that cannot be repaired. It is better to just buy a cheap TV and presume it will need to be replaced after a relatively short period of time. It is a shame the TV manufacturers today have such poor quality standards for production.

What makes me mad with DSE is that it seems to be getting worse. I watch TVs from ten years ago that have no issues. Now, you can’t find a set that doesn’t have it and I am talking flagship models. I knew about DSE when I purchased my last LCD TV, the 2018 TCL 65" 6 series. I happened to win the 'panel lottery'. I have a tiny bit of vignetting, but it's very minor. My panel is exceptionally uniform. I can't see anything. I've run all of the tests to try and show DSE, and my panel is perfect. Am I lucky, or do most get good tv's?

I bought a brand new Sony XH95 55" in November 2021 and it has some problems too. The HDR performance is really good and its very bright but it clearly has some DSE problems. Whenever there is camera movement on the horizontal axis on a blue, white, grey sky or on brown, beige, white house walls, you can clearly see tiny grayish shadowy spots on the screen. You can see these same spots on a full white screen but then they look like tiny dirty yellow spots. But i was told that my grey uniformity photos are actually very good for this set and it can look way worse than this. Which makes me wonder ... this is a 1500 USD / € TV, how much worse can it look and how is that considered 'normal'? Then i looked through some of the highest rated OLED TVs from 2020-2021 and even for these tvs you can still find dozens of Reddit and AVN forum posts about dead pixels, vertical banding, color tint, grid patterns ... and all of that is considered to be normal by the manufacturers. Even for products up to like 6000 USD/€. I think thats pretty ridiculous

I gotta say, I'm disappointed that my 77" A80J turns out to have noticeable imperfections that no reviewer or manufacture seems to talk about. For instance everyone will be so glowing about how great oled is at black levels, but whats the point if its got uniformity issues that heavily distract in darker scenes?? Likewise, mine has a noticeable tint uniformity problem when viewing white scenes where some of it appears green and some of it appears red, and this doesn't change with viewing angle. Again, oleds are apparently meant to be great for color, but it can't even show white?? I had someone come out from Sony, but it was during the day and the issues weren't as noticeable. but at night in dark room viewing - again what OLED is supposedly for - it is constantly distracting. I'd be willing to accept this with cheaper TVs, but the cost of these oleds is exorbitant. many times that of perfectly decent lcd tvs, I really was expecting closer to perfection than "hear have a tv with a bunch of imperfections and if you don't like it just return and hope for the best, what you expect us to do proper QA for a product that represents a 5 to 10 year investment for even a relatively well off family??" The tv does look amazing most of the time. and that is what makes me hesitate about returning it (If I even could at this point). But I can say confidently now that they are certainly not worth the money.

Bought a new 65" Q80A and after setting it up i saw the dirty screen effect in the middle of the screen. Made a case for Samsung support and after 1 week of twiddling their thumbs (although the support guy knew what i was talking about) , they decided to send a Samsung tech guy to visit my home and try and fix the TV, lol. As far as i know there is no easy fix to this problem.

Because of the countless floaters in my eyes DSE isn't that much of a problem for me. Try editing a photo when you've got DSE or floaters. Computer monitors also suffer from DSE, in fact I had a 2008 24" iMac that I had to have the panel replaced 4 times. Luckily I had bought Apple Care. It was a known problem and Apple just ignored it replacing the problem panel with another one with the same problem.

Went through 2 75" X90J TVs over the Christmas holiday. The 1st one had some faint vertical bands I could sometimes notice in content. The 2nd one had a grid pattern that was even more noticeable. Both had vingetting in the corners, which I expected from reviews. I was a little frustrated after spending $1,600 and seeing the DSE. I ended up returning the Sony and purchased the Vizio M7 for around $1,000. Its actually great for the price. Very clean panel with some ever so slight darkening around the edges. Compares well to the X90J overall. For me, some DSE is forgivable depending on the price.

That's also a reason I will never buy LCD TVs again. Only 1 out of 5 OLED panels from Sony and LG (48", 55", 65") I have seen showed bad vertical banding, which was pretty obvious to me even in brighter scenes. The rest was not perfect in dark scenes but still pretty damn fine and basically invisible 95% of the time. DSE on LCD displays on the other hand is the fucking worst. I can't describe how much I hate it.

DSE should not be a thing, We don't pay 2000$ for something bothering in the screen that should not be there. The first problem is the company who doesn't care. Very loose quality control because otherwise nothing would come out of the factory. I'll never buy another tv until they find a way to build tvs properly, sometimes it's just the screws that are way too tight. The second problem is transport, i've seen how these guys manipulates Tvs boxes and lol.. Playing the panel lottery is exhausting and if you return a tv with DSE there's high chances that you'll receive another one that is worse. It's not worth the hassle so we gotta 'deal with it' . I'm very DSE sensible, i see imperfection from miles away. It's a curse, some people don't see that and they're lucky.

Last year I was excited to get a new hisense u8g. Well it turn out to be a mistake because it was plagued with screen flickering at 120hz and other software issues that was suppose to be patched eventually. Not to mention android tv is just plain bad. I returned it and then went through every brand of TV at my local Walmart. All suffered from DSE. 6 tvs later I had to settle for a samsung q6dt from Sam club. Still has DSE. It came with a warranty though and I will file a claim in a couple years. I hate it though but my wife said enough is enough. If I see the DDE pop up really bad in a movie or something I will say "stupid TV" and she will be like "6 TV!". I tell you what though. We became expert tv packers.

Maybe some additional information on what causes the DSE. There are three things that make DSE: 1. Uneven backlight distribution 2. Uneven pressure on/in the panel itself 3. Uneven space distribution between the RGB layer and difusser from the backlight - The first one can be solved by replacing the backlight system, the uneven bright LED's are causing different light distribution and therefore causing DSE - The second one is solvable if the pressure lays on the panel itself, that's why some people suggest to "loosen up" the back of the TV. If the pressure lays in the panel itself than it's a manufacturing failure and can't be solved. - The third one is tricky. It's caused by either touching the RGB layer and backlight difusser or the surface of the difusser is not even. If the layers touch each other you get lighter white spots but if they don't and the difusser is uneven you can get dark spots. The RGB layer and the difusser have to have a gap between them and the defusser also has to be as even as possible so replacing the difusser solves the problem for the most time.
