Hello. Elektron recently released their new FM synth, the Digitone. This is a long tutorial for the Digitone where I'm going through many aspects of the machine while making music and sounds.

I was not having a great time trying to wrangle this thing, was beginning to have some buyer’s remorse and thinking maybe synthesis just wasn’t for me, but watching just half this video and 3 hours of tinkering I’m feeling pretty confident in my ability to get a lot of use out of the digitone and really feel inspired to create. Thanks a ton for doing what you do

The benefit of learning the Elektron workflow is that other Elektron devices are easy to operate and non Elektron synths are a piece of cake to learn. I find even modular and semi modular synths easier to patch and learn than Elektron gear. But Elektron has amazing workflow once you get it.

I’ve been around dozens and dozens of Synthesizers dating back to 1972 with my Arp 2600 and Mini Moog and so many since then. So I’m pretty good getting around most of them and have a good working knowledge of FM Synthesis but I must admit I found my Digitone a little more confusing than any other Synth I’ve had, it’s is just not an intuitive layout and it has so much depth to the settings and options. After watching this demo/explanation I completely get it. This has saved me hours of experimenting to just learn the basic layout and workflow. Thanks for this excellent video.

1:25:40 --> You just unlocked a superpower I hadn't thought about with older synths I've used. I've always preferred sequencing with well--ones like this. However, keyboard dynamics are totally lost. this mod matrix with velo immediately puts the Digitone into the same playground as my trusty Virus B or my old klunky kurzweil. Only now that same trick unlocks keyboard dynamics via sequencers like this too. *mind blown* This whole tutorial made me super happy Cuckoo, but I have to just gush about your delivery style mate. I took a hiatus of 16yrs and this feels like you're helping me get off the couch. (As it were.)

45:28 Actually, chaining is a bit more complicated. For each Pattern you'll have to go in FUNC + PAGE to reach the 'Scale' settings and specify the right values for CH.LEN and M.LEN. Otherwise, you'll get a chain with unexpected behaviors. For example, some multi-bars Patterns will only read the first bar, and some Patterns will 'break' your chain by repeating indefinitely if the M.LEN is set to 'Inf' and the CH.LEN is set to 'Off'.

How many sounds come stock with the Digitone? I see that cuckoo has more than on mine, is this because he made a bunch of his own? Mine goes up to B256. Just curious because I couldn't find one of the sounds that he used in the tutorial.

Yeah I think it comes with two full banks, doesn't it? 512 sounds. I'm using a lot of my own patches, which are available on my web store if you like what you hear. store.truecuckoo.com

Great video! Silly question can you undo an entire recording take with one manuver after a live recording?
@truecuckoo
@truecuckoo 6 жыл бұрын
I don’t think so, but if you anticipate it, the easiest way is to make a habit of copying the pattern or track before you record. If you’re unhappy with the recording, just paste.

Great video, great machine. One thing users must understand about FM synthesis, is that it's inherently more difficult to create your own sounds with than Analog Subtractive synthesis. Sure, you can make your own sounds with fm, but they always end up with a fizzy bell-like timbre unless you know what you're doing with deep modulation and carrier frequency. So many potential buyers need to know that they'll likely be relying on the Digitones internal sounds unless they can get knowledgeable about FM. Traditional Analog Subtractive is quite a bit more instant gratification. Not a dig, just a comment. The Digitone is a fantastic unit.

Digitone or Wavestate for Deluge Synthstrom as pads and chords playfellow for drum and base production? I was in the store to try the Wavestation and the sound was flat and dry like some VST plugin, or am I wrong? Cuckoo paralyzed me. Any help in my suffering? :D
@truecuckoo
@truecuckoo 4 жыл бұрын
The aesthetics of Digitone and Wavestate are very different mate. On the Deluge there’s a pretty decent FM synth engine already that can play polyphonic if you hook up a keyboard. It’s not the same, but pretty nice. But the type of sounds you can create on the Wavestate won’t be easy to replicate, if you go for those evolving sounds. I think you can make the sounds sound less flat if you work a bit with the master effects and EQ and such on the Wavestation. It’s super tough to choose! Ask your feelings :-D

Ahaha, I wanted to comment under the Cuckoo Wavestate tutorial but as I followed the digitone tutorial at the same time, I swapped it. Just to much of Cuckoo tutorials before bedtime. I think that CUckoo will come into my dream now with some dreamy synth noodling and than tell me: „ Digitone is a right way son ". Thx a lot Cuckoo for your work and time.

Brilliant Cuckoo - you have set a high bar for the standard of Elektron tutorials. Detailed, approachable but not overwhelming. 🙏 I spent a few hours (before watching this) last night creating patches - and the one takeaway I got from that, and your video, is the nature of FM is that it is quite ‘volatile’. Ie. in the sense that moving just one parameter a little bit can have radical changes in the timbre of the sound. Quite exciting, but also a bit fiddly at times. It’s really fun (and instructional) to set up a workable sound, and then randomly change the Algorhtthm to see what that does, or to just gradually sweep the Harmonic, Mix, or Levels - and hear new and unexpected tones emerge. Good stuff - and my sense is that the Digitone is a device that rewards exploratory approaches. Thank you. 👍

Can you use the MIDI In to control individual tracks or instruments? For example, writing a drum part in your DAW instead of the sequencer?
