I lost my baby at around the same age (22) and I'll be 30 soon, so she would be thirteen when I'm thirty-five too. Everything in this song resonates so strongly with me and I don't see anything sinister in it at all. I think about my daughter every day and what she would have been like... To me, she's singing from a 'what might have been' angle. Some thoughts on the song from that angle: The "hiding" reference: Hiding her child wherever she can so no one ('nature', 'God'...) can ever take them away from her, as she's experienced the loss once before, and if thinks had been different, she would do her utmost to keep her child safe - the obsessive nature of the repetition suggests that the loss made her feel powerless as a mother and a guardian to her baby. The end one sort of confirms that for me: "A wishing well or a guarantee will do for me..." And also maybe when she had the miscarriage, she wondered if there was anything she could have done differently to save her baby's life. "Turn my legs into spaghetti": This made me smile, and makes me think of being weak with relief that her baby got the chance to grow up into a thirteen year old. She'd be so grateful in this alternative reality that her child survived, when she looks at them, it makes her feel light-headed :) And as someone else said, yes, I think when she sings about a 'cell', it's definitely a play on words; 'Prison Cell' and the correlation with loss and punishment = 'Human Cells\Her baby's life' - blaming herself and her own body for her miscarriage, maybe?

thanks! I have the same situation and your comment gave me many feelings, the touches you had really meaningful. I will be addicted to this song while I'm on this mood. `You set my heart on fire`
@cosarimanediuncuorespezzat4746 жыл бұрын
Your interpretation of and relation to the song is tragic,melancholic, heart felt,hauntingly beautiful and absolutely brilliant. I knew what the song was about in general but your explanation made me feel it and provoked exploration of my emotions while trying to find those feelings within myself even though I will never be able to experience that.I'm not a female yet you made me think deeply about that sense of loss,emptiness,and how even something that is beautiful and joyous can be ripped away from you in an instant totally devastating you and ripping your world apart. It made me think of the bond,connection, and endearment that a woman would experience even right after the conception and how substantially and profoundly that bond would grow over time. Your words provide insight and instill an unnatural empathy for the opposite gender. In the sense that even a man can take themselves into the depth and understanding of those emotions if they just try. You translated the lyrics in a way that defined the feeling of the metaphorical implications in the song, so instead of just hearing them with a basic and outlying understanding you made it so I could feel them which in turn gave the metaphors a much deeper meaning. The way you expressed personal connection inspires deep thought and practically beckons one to commiserate. So in ending this I say again beautiful and thank you. To all of those who Interpret this song as a comment to pedophilia you are stealing all my air and taking the space of someone with intelligence and worthy of existence. Lets play a game you hold your breathe for 10 minutes or so and then I will tell you what you win when the games over, hurry!!!! I'll time you. Maybe you could even put a plastic bag over your head so I know you won't try to cheat and then of course I may have to put some tape around the bottom so it doesn't fall off on you . :)
@cosarimanediuncuorespezzat4746 жыл бұрын
I wonder though if the wishing well part was more about her being given that opportunity to wish things were different and her baby was living and it would be so or if she cant have that even a guarantee that she would eventually get to see her child again someday would suffice.Almost pleading for someone to just tell her with all certainty that there is a heaven and her daughter will be there when she passes on and that alone would be enough to keep her going. I think when something traumatic like that happens it makes someone question faith overall and even if they don't believe in a higher power in the first place it makes them question faith even more. Also if you don't believe in gods you wish even more that there actually was some sort of higher power there to give you some real justifiable answers and give you some relief and peace of mind. In turn that just hurts you even more when you return to your original disbelief again and definitively realize more than before that there is no gods or peaceful places when you die and there's no one waiting for you.then sobering reality takes hopes place.

@@427_gouravbhaskara6 Oh here we go the gender identity police does it really matter whether she assumed gender or not that's not the topic of focus. She took time to creatively give her interpretations of the song in a relatively connected and heartfelt way and all you can do is ask a stupid fucking question. Man some people are so fucking annoying. How about just noticing and complimenting the good qualities of someones statements and stories instead of picking everyone comments apart. I don't know maybe its that you're too dumb to creatively offer your insight of a song in such a way.

This song has been on my music playlist for over a year, maybe two, but I am just now really listening to it. If this song is about her baby, it would make sense. Strongest taste, loudest drop, head is filled, the thought, unlocked - refers to her thinking about her baby as an a teen. She's imaging them together when they are older. Their ages 13 and 35 proves this point. She then proceeds to find a place for them to spend time alone. You set my heart on fire, is how she feels for her baby. "You turn my legs to spaghetti" is that nervous you feel when meeting someone for the first time and they enchant you. The bottom of a coal mine, is a reference to where she put her baby. The vent is a way for her baby to breath and reach her "just enough space for your hands in the inside. The prison is the place she's at or found for herself, where her baby can find her. If you go, please let me know - is her asking her baby to forgive her by meeting with her. The list of places she list off, she's saying it doesn't matter where her baby pick, where they meet.

I tought it was about Lolita, the Nabokov's book. You know, she was 13, he was 35. They'll must have to find a place to hide, because what they were doing it illegal. ' a cave or a shed a car or a bed a hole in the ground or a burial mound a bush or a tree or the aegean sea, will do for me' like the places they used to spend time together or having sex. @PeaceElk5 жыл бұрын
Samuel Ramos it’s not anyone’s fault. It is nature. Mostly a gene defect or developing defect and the embryo will stop growing. Rarely it is a fault in ‘the system’ such as a problem in mother blood, or auto immune disease. But next to nature, it is falling apart of the dream you were expecting. Incredibly painful and sad. 💔 I favourited this video years ago, but after having miscarried twice and listening to the lyrics this song touched my heart even deeper. 🙏🏼

You know what the beauty of music is? That you can interpret it any way you want. Stop trying to prove to people the "true" meaning, and just be satisfied with the meaning YOU think is true.
@FritoPapito10 жыл бұрын
I think you have a point here, about us interpreting music in our own ways and the beauty of it. However, Dillon clearly stated that this is about her miscarriage, something personal to her, and for you to make an interpretation of something so personal to someone would do that person a great disservice. That's like saying Van Gogh's Starry Night is just some over-rated piece of garbage when that art represented the feeling of isolation Van Gogh must have experienced as a struggling and unappreciated artist before and after he entered the asylum. I guess this is all just moral relativism though, I don't know it just seems that people feel too entitled with their "Freedom." What even is it.
@katbamf9910 жыл бұрын
Jolo .Pulido This is very true. But, what I was getting at is that people are either going to believe something or not. People want to relate music to themselves, even if that isn't was that song is actually about. There is no reason to get upset about it in the comment section of KZbin.
@kristopherhall10 жыл бұрын
Jolo .Pulido Artists do not have the ability to control the meaning of their work. A work of art exists apart from the creator, and the meaning, or lack of meaning, is determined by the product itself. The position that you are taking is referred to as intentional fallacy, or the fallacy of authorial intent, which has been an invalid form of critique since about the mid 1950s. I could wrap a toilet in a piece of cheese and say that it represents my heartache at the state of modern man, but my opinion would be irrelevant and the final meaning would be determined by the interpretation of the audience.
@dabdab1010 жыл бұрын
Do you even realise that you're technically contradicting yourself? " You know what the beauty of music is?" - "Stop trying to prove to people..." - "just be satisfied..." It's not a question of whether to be or not to be.

People who claim this is boring or lazy music and identify these adjectives with the indie genre have it severely wrong. On the surface we indie rockers are quiet, but that's a sophistication. You see paintings of emotion and not time spent over-producing them until they're unrecognisable. Think of minimalist tattoo's, i really identify with them, because they're smooth, sleek, elegant and not over stimulating. I enjoy the lyrics far more when i'm not trying to process every artificial sound thrown into a track. Taking the raw feeling with this song is what makes it valuable, you need to escape yourself and everything you know about life and just enjoy the slow, yet powerful music. Indie music is hated because it's seen as a modern version of hippie music, it's not about lying in the sun and sunglasses and drugs, to some maybe, but it can also represent the refined and mature qualities of life, and those that can just smile and be happy for experiencing a sense of another's sentiment and passion. I think 'indie' music is what it says on the tin. independent. It is for your benefit and to meet with an inner equilibrium of yourself and what you enjoy. So don't compare yourself with others and battle whether this is good or bad, but respect that music is personal and unrepresentative of stationary moods. You are an ever-changing organism, just roll with it :)

upqsevenhundredhp It is about a miscarriage www.songlyrics.com/dillon/thirteen-thirtyfive-lyrics/

Nisal Cottingham The negative meaning is paedophilia. The actual meaning is a miscarriage. The point of my comment was saying that the ambiguity of the song is where the beauty lies.

Is it her real life story?
@100fates10 жыл бұрын
PPplubploy Yes, according to the comments in an interview she said this song is about her miscarriage and 13 is the age her son/daughter would be if they were still alive and she would be 35, hence thirteen thirty-five.

Jake Morrison its a bit further down in the comments, but basically she was pregnant and had a miscarriage. when her daughter turned 13, she would have been 35.

that's how you recognize a good artist. they don't just scribble some words on paper they become the words, words that only the artist understands.

this just drives me crazy....It's deep, it's familiar and quite strange at the same time.. I love, there is freshness, there is desperation and irony.
@desireej29678 жыл бұрын
i agree, what do you think she's talking about? i only have a few guesses but I'm not sure..
@alwaysinlate8 жыл бұрын
Maybe she's talking about a troubled love and about the lovers that just can't reach this place to hide ttemselves.. Like they can't be together in the real world, even if they are in love.. And than comes reality.. (Maybe I'm just reflecting about what this song means to me..)

Oh wow, it's been years since I last heard this song... Even though my music taste is not very much at home in pop, this song still leaves me with a certain warm feeling inside that I can't really explain ... It's a bit like nostalgia along with something else that I can't quite put into words.

I find myself coming back to this song, among others, when I am unhappy with some aspect of my life. This song doesn't necessarily remind me of a better time, but when I first heard it I was so tired of it all. I wonder why...*Edit Today is 19 Aug, 22. Here I am again. Work has been hard. I get very little satisfaction out of my job...and a girl that I clearly had a connection with is out of reach, due to me moving. It is the first time I've been sad to not be with a particular girl. I got a small smile out of the fact that she seemed sad I am leaving. Not because she is sad. But that it is proof that she actually cared. Although her sadness isn't worth it in the end. Amidst it all, this song is still a comfort. 25Nov2022. I have since moved halfway across the country and have found a new start in a new city, with an entirely new job. Thus far, this is what I needed...even though it was hard to let go.

28Feb2023. Here I am again...seeking comfort. What is wrong with this world where so many of us feel lost? I have been here for about 3 months. I find that every day is the same...Groundhog day. While I don't HATE it here...I miss where I left to come here. I had to move here for my job...I wish they had left me where I was. I miss my girl and I don't fit in here. Maybe in a few more months I will find my place more fitfully. I don't talk to anyone here once I leave work...

I don't know if she meant to mindfuck people listening or something but the lyrics to this song are just.. Try imagining a man singing this out beside you at a children's playground "you'll be 13, i'll be 35" "going to find a place for us to hide" "be together but alone cos the need for IT has grown" "A car or a bed" "A bush or a tree" "I can say that you look pretty, you turn my legs into spaghetti"

I remember the first time I saw this song on my KZbin dash. I was listening to Daughter but I never actually listened to this because I thought it was boring. And then one day I decided to finally listen to it and goodamnit I fell in love with the song and her voice and I repeated it like five times. Never understimate a song because you find it boring. Give it a try because you might find the new song you love ❤

Strongest taste Loudest drop Head is filled The thought, unlocked Strongest taste Loudest drop Head is filled The thought, unlocked Strongest taste Loudest drop Head is filled The thought, unlocked Strongest taste Loudest drop Head is filled You'd be thirteen I'd be thirty-five Gone to find a place for us to hide Be together, but alone As the need for it has grown You'd be thirteen I'd be thirty-five Gone to find a place for us to hide Be together, but alone As the need for it has grown, yeah Cha cha, cha cha, cha cha Cha cha, cha cha A cave or a shed A car or a bed A hole in the ground Or a burial mound A bush or a tree Or the aegean sea, will do for me Cha cha, cha cha, cha cha Cha cha, cha cha, ha I can say that you look pretty You turn my legs into spaghetti You set my heart on fire For you I found a vent In the bottom of a coal mine Just enough space for your hands in the inside If you go Do let me know You'd be thirteen I'd be thirty-five Gone to find a place for us to hide A den or a dessert Perhaps an ink squirt A cellar, a wishing well, a war Or a guarantee, will do for me For you I found a cell On the top floor of a prison Just enough space for you to fit your feet in If you go Do let me know For you I found a cell On the top floor of a prison Just enough space for you to fit your feet in If you go Please let me know I go running with a heart on fire
