Linear algebra describes things in two dimensions, but many of the concepts can be extended into three, four or more. Linear algebra implies two dimensional reasoning, however, the concepts covered in linear algebra provide the basis for multi-dimensional representations of mathematical reasoning. Matrices, vectors, vector spaces, transformations, eigenvectors/values all help us to visualize and understand multi dimensional concepts. This is an advanced course normally taken by science or engineering majors after taking at least two semesters of calculus (although calculus really isn't a prereq) so don't confuse this with regular high school algebra.

is it even possible to have a basis for a subspace in Rn with only k vectors?

*Leaving this here just in case* Yes because we are not spanning Rn but a subspace of Rn For example: If the Space is R3,then we can define a subspace,say a plane in R3 with only 2 vectors. Notice that the vectors are in R3,ie,they have 3 components *v1* = (a1,a2,a3) and *v2* = (b1,b2,b3) but they dont need to have 3 ,ie, n here vectors.
