Very comprehensive demo. I was struggling to find a pickup to pair for my FT-1 and upon watching your video got sold on the AZ. It is just rounder and more defined to my ears. Keep it up!
@khikekx35616 жыл бұрын
The AZ is more open with an EQ where the bass and medium stand out, it could be said that it is a vintage version of the Tone Zone

Agreed. The harmonic content is so rich as well. Not to mention its creamy luscious overdriven tones!

Surprised at how well the Air Zone sits in a mix. Really thought I'd prefer the Andy Timmons but I don't.
@angusorvid88403 жыл бұрын
The Air Zone is very smooth and cuts through very well. It's easier on the ears in the long run than the Timmons, which I still consider a very fine pickup. My favorite DiMarzios at the moment are the Air Zone, Air Norton, Steve's Special, and the good old Super Distortion. There are many others but these are the go-tos for me depending on the tone I want from a particular guitar. My approach is to make every guitar I own sound as unique as possible so I have a nice tone palette to work with.
@maxmobley59933 жыл бұрын
Thanks man. This is how a pickup demo vid should go. Just A/B and gear list. No prattling on... :) Good stuff! AT-1 for the win!
@angusorvid88403 жыл бұрын
I have an Air Zone and love it. I dig the AT-1 but the Air Zone has a fuller sound. It beefs up my strat without being muddy. Better than a Tone Zone.
@colinc6031 Жыл бұрын
Thank you for this. I am looking at both of these pickups right now. You just made up my mind for the Air Zone. The AT-1 has a high mid honk that I do not like. The Air Zone has a warm and balanced tone with clarity.
@angusorvid88408 ай бұрын
The Air Zone and the Tone Zone are my two favorite bridge pickups of all time. I find the AT-1 a bit too much on a high end, although it's still a great pickup, much better than a JB. When Andy Timmons went to DiMarzio he, like Eddie, had been using Duncan JBs for years. I preferred the tapered high end of the Air Zone because it's easier to live with when you crank up the high gain. Just dial back the Bass, turn up Treble and Presence and it balances out very well.

Much prefer the Air Zone since it's softer and warmer with better dynamics. AT sounds thicker in the mids, has more compression and sort of annoying high mid spike played clean.
@angusorvid88403 жыл бұрын
The Air Zone is awesome in the bridge of my Alder strat. The AT-1 is better for mahogany guitars. I think it's just a bit brittle at the high end. The AZ is more well balanced and also has tremendous sustain and complex harmonics.
@keithbell4528 Жыл бұрын
These 2 pickups were recommended to me on my Charvel Model 5FX. My Charvel has an EMG-81 & slant EMG neck single coil, features a neck-through construction with a maple neck and poplar body. It's the only guitar I have with active pickups and I'm looking for good replacement passive pickups for it.
@angusorvid88408 ай бұрын
I'd go with the Air Zone. The high end is better than the AT-1 which is a tad too trebly. Just remember to adjust your amp accordingly. The Air Zone has a very full low end and turning down the Bass while turning up the Treble and Presence helps dial in a solid tone. Most pickups are on the trebly side, including EMGs. The Air Zone has a tapered high end. It's easier on the ears than an 81 or a Duncan JB.

Just listening thru the phone… I find the AZ to be more even sounding but a bit messy with higher gain. The AT1 is very tight (compressed) which allows for better definition but loses out for me when handling rhythm parts where you’d like the chord to fade or bleed a bit more. I have owned an AZ a long time ago in a warmth strat… I didn’t like it at that time. Weird mid range vowel sounding? I have a TZ in a partocaster and like it fairly well. Was considering the AT to tame some of the messiness (bring about a bit better definition with similar eq… but now after hearing the AZ - I’m thinking to hold off and reconsidering the AZ. There’s a balance and compromise I guess? Great demo btw… was really helpful to hear in the mix! Thanks for posting

I look at the AT-1 as an improved JB tone. Mid-heavy and honky - but not as bad as a JB.
@angusorvid88408 ай бұрын
@@AndyK.23 Agreed. I like the Air Zone and Tone Zone more because they are even less honky. I like a smooth, rounded high end.

Great demo. Partially based on this I picked an AT-1 in the bridge of my partscaster. A half aired TZ was almost right but missed the snap a Tele should have. The AT-1 sings in it. It pairs up very nicely with a Lace Sensor Blue neck to my utter surprise.

I am happy to read that the video was helpful, the AT1 is a very balanced pickup, very versatile, next to the Norton I consider are the best all terrain.

Highs on the Air Zone sound too muted and compressed. AT1 sounds much more open.
@khikekx35616 жыл бұрын
I feel that the AZ stands out more in media and bass and that the AT is more balanced in Bass with more presence in mid and treble.
@someoneelse1012 жыл бұрын
The AT1 was designed with mahogany bodies in mind but looking at comparisons between both I think the Air Zone may suit an arch top guitar such as the SA series better from what I can tell and the AT1 may suit a flat top better.

Anyone find the AT-1 tends to lack a little low end/bass - it’s not just a tightness thing, i hear the AT-1 is a little high mid focused and low end is missing
@marty-b34535 жыл бұрын
To my ear;the AT-1 has much better clarity and cut especially in a playing mix,seems to project much more with a broader bandwidth.I have been looking for a partner bridge pickup to the breed I have in the neck and you have helped me tremendously,many thanks and keep up the good work.Ignore comments about distortion sound as this is a personal and subjective topic anyway.

Hmm, I liked the Air Zone better for cleans and low gain crunch. It sounds more open and linear than the AT-1. The AT-1 has this weird cocked wah type sound in cleans and has a compressed woof at low gain crunch. However, in high gain samples, the cocked wah type sound of AT-1 makes it cut through the mix better and the compression imparts more clarity and a nice rasp to the sound. The open sound of the Air Zone on the other hand turns into a wall of sound.
@tastjohn18892 ай бұрын
I prefer with the Air zone, the sound is thicker and not sharp sound when distortion is on.. I think I'm gonna put this Air zone in the bridge, and pair it with utopia neck in the neck.

Air zone sits better in the mix. If band has more instruments than just guitars air zone allows to beautifully harmonize all the instruments. Air zone drawback is a poorly accentend rhytm section which is a pos of AT in the comparison, so harder genres probably will suffer using air zone because of soft sound compression, probably thats why tone zone was introduced - to workaround this limitation and fix rhytm clarity and make pickup more versatile
@spaceavenger542 жыл бұрын
DiMarzio says on their site that the Andy timmons pick up has a little trouble response which is what I was looking for for this new guitar I got which is all Maple body neck fingerboard everything and what's in it now is too bright however it says it's designed to go into a mahogany body why would you design a pickup with a little trouble I can't figure that out and from some of the comments on here they've said that the Andy timmons seems to have a high-end Spike to it. I can't really tell over my crappy phone speaker.

@@Caballeroscuro78 The Cruiser is a humbucker in a single coil casing. Try using one of the noiseless singles like one of the Area, Injector or Virtual Vintage in the middle and neck pickups with it if your guitar has HSS. I think it would pair well with the Humbucker From Hell at the neck in a HH guitar. If the guitar sounds thin like you said at the bridge the pickup could be defective if you’ve followed the colour coding and not obtained the results you hoped for
