Thank you for sharing, great video!! Happy to hear model j sound great on a fretted bass!!! Thought they were ""only"" for fretless

I recognize the 1st song, is Paul Young - Everytime You Go Away. (which is a cover song of Hall & Oates)😊 Pino Palladino did a beautiful use of a fretless bass on this song.

I like the Ultra Jazz pickups because they have more definition and growl!!!

The fretted bass really shows the difference. The model J is more thumpy and phat, more presence. Almost like a P. The ultrajazz sounds more like traditional burpy jazz sound with the top end grind. Both nice. I really like the ballsy nature of the Model J .

Thanks for the feedback! The fretted one had ultrajazz set for the last 18 or 19 yrs, but after all that exchanging experiments I decided to leave the model-J on it. And also add a bit brightness to fretless one with an ultrajazz set.

@@groovernator the fretless with model J sounds hella middy which is nice i guess but i can understand ultrajazz complimenting a fretless well.

Great video! I watched this specifically for the fretless on both P/Us. It sounds like you're using round wound strings on your fretless. Could you confirm? I kind of like the Model J sound myself. Sounds deeper and fuller to me..

hoy! yep, this is roundwounds (elixir)

I got the Ultra Jazz for my ‘78 Jazz. Been using it for almost 25 years and it really cuts through nicely but it does sacrifice some of the vintage Jazz sound. Am presently refinishing it, will maintain the Ultra Jazz but am going to use the Fender control set with 250K pots and a 0.1mF cap. Hope it tames the top end down a bit and not too much.

after all those excahges I just decided to keep 'model-J's on a fretted jb. not for the some sound reasons but just of my laziness =) I was ok with ultrajazzes for about 18 yrs but with modelJ's I'm OK too. Yep, they're less bright and more middy, but i like it too. BTW, I even made a new mod now - series pickups connection realized on push/pull. 'series' mod gives more 'vintageness' than you can imagine!
@hushpuppykl6 ай бұрын
@@groovernator … I been considering the parallel and series mod but with the Fender wiring set I can’t use push pull. To drill a switch on the Fender control plate … you know. Maybe a parallel/series switch and another for 2 caps option … 0.033 and 0.047 😈😂🤣

@@hushpuppykl I can't hear the difference btwn 0.047 and even 0.022 actually. not worth the effort

@@groovernator … some of the YT videos there is a slight obvious difference BUT it can easily be compensated by EQ or the tone pot. 😂🤣

Great comparison dude! Really helped me choose between the 2 pickups. I'll go for the model j over the ultras. I just love the bridge pickup sound. I had a question though What pots were you using? 250k or 500k?
@groovernator Жыл бұрын
hey! it's 250's
@Donnie_Thornberry3 ай бұрын
@@groovernatorModel J pickups sound way brighter with 500k pots. They were designed to be used with them.

@timbuk1126 thank you, may be I'll try 500's someday. but....I do not lookin for extra brightness actually.

I don't remember exactly. Usually rounds nickel 40-100 or 40-95. I don't care the brands, even chinese =)
