This song is about the sad love story of the historical Emperor Tang Taizong and his beloved concubine Noble Consort Yang (one of the four great beauties of ancient China. Many poems were created about her beauty). Emperor Tang was a mighty emperor until he fell madly in love with Yang and neglected state affairs. Rebels almost overthrew him until his generals and officials unanimously petitioned him to execute Yang for bewitching him. In this song, Emperor Tang bestowed Consort Yang with poisoned wine which she drank willingly. As she lay dying, she reminisces on happier times when she drank wine with him underneath the stars.
