There used to be more Russians than Kazakhs in Kazakhstan before they gain independence. The Soviet Union officially ceased to exist as a sovereign state on 26 December 1991 and Kazakhstan became an internationally recognized independent state. On 28 January 1993, the new Constitution of Kazakhstan was officially adopted. Kazakh is the official language of the former Soviet republic in Central Asia, but Russian is recognized too and is still widely spoken among the tightly controlled country's population of some 20 million. The transition of using Russian in Kazakhstan to using its own state language is slowly changing, starting from its media.
