As a side note, at the time of this performance, he was still learning English and sang the song phonetically. These competitors were all professional singers/groups and were required to perform cover songs only. I believe they were given a week between performances to pick the song, learn it, practice, and have it ready for performance. Also, Dimash was a last minute addition as a wildcard singer. Most of the others had never heard of him prior and his participation in this made him famous in China overnight.

All of a sudden there were sooo many reaction videos here on KZbin and everyone was talking about him and saying "You need to check him out!" and that made me think "No, I don't" (that's also the reason why I still haven't watched Disney's "Frozen" btw lol). The second reason was the fact that I could've sworn I've read somewhere that he's a K-Pop singer and K-Pop isn't my thing at all.

Brian May heard Dimash sing this song and said Freddie would have been proud. Remember, this is the first time Dimash sang a song in English; his two previous songs were in French and Russian, in that order. The little guy in the black T-shirt had to go on after Dimash and said that he was stressed out about singing after Dimash. Dimash came in second place because he was the first foreigner and the youngest singer in the show's history to be invited. It was a singing competition for professional Chinese singers only. So of course he was only going to get second place. However, the show's producers had Dimash stay in China for two years, and built a state-of-the-art studio for him. He did recordings and tours during his stay in China. I guess having to accept being second paid off big time for him, since he really was better than any of the other singers, and they were very good.

As a life long Queen Fan myself I loved your reaction. Just like there is no one like Freddie there is no one on the planet today like Dimash,. Sit back buckle up you haven’t seen anything yet. He can sing any genre and his vocal range that we know of is 6+ octaves. We don’t know for sure because he won’t say and everything he does is something new and you never know what to expect.

Dimash wash the first non-Chinese’s competitor and the youngest in the history of the Singer at 22. They actually placed him as a wild card, figuring he wouldn’t make it past the first or second show. So he was more of a guest. Brian May called to congratulate Dimash after his cover. I was born in the UK and was a little kid during Glam Rock. Then I became a fan of Queen and a huge Kenny Everett Video Show fan (Freddie and Kenny were both close friends and both died of AIDS). Both were my icons as a young British girl. I can’t watch either without crying like a baby and refuse to listen to covers of Queen until this cover by Dimash. He is unapologetically brilliant, unabashed and passionate with the technical skills so innate he can sell the song with abandon. Yes, I cry like a baby during this performance. Thanks Dimash. Freddie would love you and probably adopt you if he could. Mad respect.

Dimash was an unusual invite and knowing it was China, Dimash had to win 2nd place which is really 1st to those who hear but China had to win. Dimash was the first foreigner allowed to compete, he was also the youngest competitor at 22, on the Singer competition, ever. He was only supposed to perform for two shows. After the fan reaction, it was decided that Dimash would go on. Dimash figured he would end up in the middle . He was going up against China’s most experienced and professional performers. He won performances 1, 2, and 8. This show went on for 4 months. Placing second I would think would be great to Dimash or anyone else! He was invited back to perform as a guest, the next year. He performed in China for 2 years after that show. 😁

And it is not just his voice - he is an incredibly thoughtful, kind and always respectful young man, dedicated to his art, deeply routed in his family and adorably proud of his homeland and culture. Someone you could be actually proud to be a fan of. By the way your knees will hurt a lot in the future, Dimash dropping to his knees happens quite a lot - he is a very physical singer, throwing his whole body into a performance.
