Please listen to the the first two tracks of their album Puritanical Euphoric Misanthropia, “Fear and Wonder” and “Blessings upon the throne of tyranny”. The first song builds the second. Nick Barker drumming was in a league of his own. If you want to hear a beautiful symphonic track, “Progenies of the Great Apocalypse” is a must.

They were the first in the genre to go mainstream. I’ve heard tapes of early symphonic black metal and… no. It sounded like violins screeching over guys who couldn’t play their instruments. Dimmu Borgir elevated the genre to an art form. They’ve worked with almost every major symphony orchestra in the world and do their own composing as well.

This song is a grand masterpiece. I'm almost brought to tears listening to it (don't know why). The massive sound, sheer beauty, and forward driven parts lends itself for being one of the band's best recordings/performances. As far as black metal, no part encapsulates the spirit of the genre more like the blast-beat bridge section at 10:33 ... pure goosebumps and makes me proud to be a fan. - Ant from Queens, NY. 🤘🏼

This is unexpected. Dimmu Borgir's music can be fairly divisive, depending on whether you prefer their newer material or their older material. I'm personally more of a fan of Death Cult Armageddon and In Sorte Diaboli, but their influence is undeniable. As far as black metal goes, I highly recommend Obsequiae, specifically the combination of 'L'autrier m'en aloie' and 'Ceres In Emerald Streams' because the medieval harp intro is absolutely essential to getting the full Obsequiae experience. It's an incredible thing.

I love that you loved it! Can’t wait for you to check out Mourning Palace, Interdimensional summit, Progenies of the great apocalypse, The serpentine offering and the list goes on and on 😄 They are a Norwegian symphonic black metal band that has had a huge influence worldwide since the beginning. They are really masters at changing it up and playing around with different styles, so older fans might not be as excited about their new stuff. But I think it’s good and that a band has to change it up for them not to get bored. And it’s working because they’re still here doing it after like 28 (!) yrs. Only the singer and guitarist is OGs though.

Yeah boyyyy this is what I'm here for. Dimmu is easily my favorite band, and I love seeing the take on this song in particular from a composer!! As far as this song goes, I think my absolutely favorite element happens in the very last pass of the chorus. I don't know what instrument it is precisely, but it sounds like a drum of some sort. It's a heavy, if a bit sublime melody driver throughout the song, but in this last part it sounds like it gets accentuated a fair bit. You can hear its frequency in the soundscape actually increase, both in terms of its own beat but also for which parts of the melody it's present for, as the climax of the final 15-20 seconds of the song is playing out. Hands down the best singular element in this entire song, and so powerful to listen to. A lot of people are going to suggest The Serpentine Offering and Progenies of the Great Apocalypse as other songs to check out by this band. Both are great songs in their own regard, even composition-wise... BUT my recommendation would be to go a bit off the beaten path, because neither of those songs are substantially different from this one. Here are some suggestions that I think will tickle the composer's mind just as much, if not more, because they have vastly different structures than Gateways: The Sacreligious Scorn, Interdimensional Summit, and Kings of the Carnival Creation. Another extreme metal band with some fairly technical composition is FLESHGOD APOCALYPSE. Their sound is at times a bit rougher than this, but the arrangements in their tracks are masterful. Try in particular The Violation, but Monnalisa, Sugar and The Forsaking also show beautifully what can come when you marry hard melodic metal and (elements and structures from) classical music.

The Funerary Dirge of a Violinist brought me to tears a few times. I was also going through a rough time in my life and listened to and, at times, played music as a catharsis for my emotions. This was one of the songs that helped.

@@kalinora3901 I can definitely relate, on all levels. Music is my catharsis in so many ways at this point, including just listening or just playing. And tracks like that, especially with the video, just _hit_ you like a tonne of bricks in certain moods. Can even happen when you're not expecting it, it's a beautiful song in many ways. Sorry to hear you were having a rough time, but glad to hear you were able to have some help through it in a healthy way with music, and that that track helped a lot as well. Music I feel is the purest and most primal form of healing and feeling that is out there

I've been a fan of Dimmu for 15 years, and this is a wonderful example of them. Glad you liked it, please do yourself a favor and listen to the Insight and the Catharsis. That's my favorite by them for sure. When Mustis and ICS Vortex were part of the crew. Spiritual Black Dimensions is a phenomenal album

Progenies of the great apocalypse. Gotta get some of their tracks with their opera singer and pianist before they left the band.

you should've reacted to the live version with full orchestra and choir they did in Oslo and Wacken. I can also recomment Therion if you haven't heard them. They are the masters of blending opera and metal.

I was huge into Dimmu back in the early 2000s. Had the pleasure of seeing them live at a smaller venue in Norfolk Virginia. Fucking incredible show.

Yes!! Finally you did it. Ever since I first discovered your channel some 8 months ago, I knew that you would love this band. So much in there for you to dissect. Their music is very technical and their compositions are powerful and really takes you on a journey. Also their songs are kind of evil and sinister sounding, as how you would imagine Sauron from LOTR theme songs would be. However their earlier work is much superior. As is mentioned by others, check out "The insight and the catharsis", "Kings of the carnival creation", "Mourning Palace", "Progenies of the great apocalypse" and "The serpentine offering". You will be amazed, my guy!:)) Love your channel btw.

As others have said, watch the live performance of this from the forces of the northern light. Full orchestra, choir... With those in the front seat, the band taking less focus. Which they wanted, and it's amazing. Would love to watch you react to that.
