Summertime in Corfu is when the Greek term for village festivities, or panigyria, occurs. A panegyris, from the Ancient Greek παvήγυρις, meaning "gathering," was a general, national, or religious assembly in Ancient Greece that was intended to worship a single god. These days, it's also connected to holy festivals and saint days. Numerous festivals, some bigger than others, take place all around the island every week.
Every community honors the saint that the neighborhood church is named for. After a church service, there's a carnival with traditional dancing, live Greek music, a ton of souvlaki (and retsina!), and of course, lamb on the spit.
