Supporter of Ding Liren here. I personally believe that there are way more players better than him but he truly deserves to be a world champ for showing his prowess where he needs it the most.

It's times like this I'm glad I didn't bet the ranch on Ding going down in flames. Seemed like a slam dunk at the time. Go Ding.

One of the better commentsries by a narrator who almost obviously isn't a true French Defense player. More than usual comments about what French players like about French positions but lacking some of the psychology of the positions, a willingness to endure cramped positions, Gukesh's inability to setup a meaningful K-side attack, IMO the extremely difficult decisions Ding had to make at every move whether to take on d4 or extend the double pawn chain by playing c4 and so on. Although I haven't seen Ding play the French before, it fits his style and strengths very well as a positional maneuvering style and although not usually considered an attacking weapon strikes at White from the first move by preparing d5 and following c5 and a Q-side expansion that can't be prevented. The imbalance is that Black needs fewer pawns to lever open lines and is fast to attack White who has spent time dominating the center who has more space but is a little behind in his K-side attack. Both sides must be very economical in their defense or be crushed. Quick, trappy ideas are minimized so both players should be seeing what their opponent bis doing many moves in advance

Mike, I love your videos but in this one you didn't show or mention the clock times and that was a crucial element of this game. At one point some commentators thought Ding had lost the plot as he was taking so long for some standard moves. In the next WC video please do take into account the time element if if plays a crucial role in the game.

What do people mean by alpha zero move ?? Please help
@tonysu88603 күн бұрын
AlphaZero is the computer AI technology of the chess playing engine Lc0 aka Leela. Many people say AlphaZero is the name of a chess playing program but that is incorrect except for a couple demo games played around 2017. T think this misuse of the name is related to a book written about that time which was ambivalent between using the name to describe the engine and the technology Anyway, Leela was a revolutionary chess engine which for the first time effectively paired neural network AI with large and powerful GPU computing that today dominates AI in general and because AlphaZero technology is 100% self taught without human input, started playing chess in ways humans never considered and the most eye catching was its tendency to play forward the wing pawns and in particular the rook pawns. This practice was not completely new and conformed with fundamental chess concepts by first stabilizing the center but the frequency Leela was playing this move was revolutionary because for millennia humans never considered doing this except in special positions like in the Yugoslav attack to the Dragon Sicilian. And because of Leela's play a completely new understanding of the benefits of throwing rook pawns forward has advanced chessplay. Today's modern play is less centuc and more the entire board edge to edge, the benefits of a far advanced pawn in the endgame has been rediscovered and this is because rook pawns are the least valued o n the board so can be moved with impunity since at the beginning they can be lost or sacrificed often for benefit(yes, sometimes it's worthwhile to lose a rook pawn and be down material).

I dont think Gukesh played in a nice way yesterday. I think he had underestimated the opponent. Shown terrible mistakes both on Qyeen side and King side. The game didnt reach any where near the standard of a world championship.

Yes 😊
@tonysu88603 күн бұрын
I don't know if Gukesh expected to play against a French Defense but the French poses different ideas than most top level play today. Specifically Black does not directly counter White's intentions but instead counterattacks where White himself can't counter and must defend. Deciding how and whether to defend d4 can require tough and difficult decisions and Black can also suddenly at some time play c5-c6 and shift to a new target attacking the new base of the pawn chain in c3 or even b2. In this game Ding was able to open lines on the Q-side exposing a vulnerable c3 pawn. It's debatable how much Gukesh was at fault or Ding played well even at a GM level.

@@tonysu8860 guk made some mistakes tho he should think more
@annapoorni13 күн бұрын
Taking the knight with his knight instead of taking it with his black bishop was probably the turning point as an opportunity to strengthen the already weak c3 pawn was lost. This move exposed the c3 pawn to an all out attack. But then it is always easy to know what to do from the armchair. Being in the arena is a different beast altogether. Kudos to the kid. All of 18. I am all admiration for his composure and ability to handle the pressure. All the best to Gukesh. God bless
@Chris-873 күн бұрын
No lol. He was still technically better at that point. The turning point would be Rac1 or Qe1 depending on how you look at it. Rac1 allowing Black's Queen to infiltrate c4, or Qe1 allowing black to go Bg5 were much more critical. With that being said. All this is way easier to know because of the computer eval. Neither of us comes close to either of these players, but it is easier to attack than defend and even the best fall short of perfect defense compared to the greatest engines.
@annapoorni13 күн бұрын
@Chris-87 Don't you think Rac1 and Qe1 was necessitated due to weak c3 pawn. These forced defensive moves inhibited any possible counter attacks. That was my line of thinking anyway.
@Chris-873 күн бұрын
@annapoorni1 No, the engine even said if he played Be1 to defend the pawn it was solid, and Black wouldn't be breaking through. That's why White was still slightly better.
