Very pleased for Sato. Her attack was as iffy as normal, but her chopping, and lob defence were brilliant. Especially moving from forehand to backhand chop and visa versa. I know some of this is Ding’s decline. Her top spins don’t have enough juice on them now. I really doubt she’s going to the Olympics as a singles player. And if she doesn’t improve on this showing early next year she won’t even make the team. Sad, but long live the next queen.

Hitomi reminds me of Koji Matsushita as a chopper as a more defensive chopper rather than the offensive minded Joo Se Hyuk. I never know about her until now. Her backhand chop can be improved, as she can chop deeper and spinner, I guess against Ding Ning she does not have the time to react. Forehand drive definitely can be improved. Her footwork and court coverage is good. Long live the chopper !

A couple of things to note here. Notice how Sato mostly chops back to the middle of the table on Ding's side. Ding is unable to create the angles she needs from here. Ding doesn't have good power/spin vs. underspin - Ding is comfortable looping against topspin but not underspin. She has had this problem in her career before. Hu Limei could beat her. Hu got assigned to Ding so Ding could level up against chop, but it has always been Ding's weak point. Next notice Ding's left foot as she loops? She is not as well anchored as she could have been. And she often rotates that left leg forwards during the loop action. That is a bad habit that amateurs make. Why? Well, if Ding's weight was on her leg leg,- as it should, it can't rotate like that. So it shows Ding didn't put weight on the correct leg for the loop for power. Her weight was on her right leg, meaning she pivoted about the right leg during the loop stroke. That is a less powerful loop.

Laurence Nyein My opinion is mainly because of her age. Sato drained off a lot her physical strength and consistency/accuracy is proportional physical strength, thus Ding made a lot of unforced errors later in the match.
