Well you can't just expect the opponent to make a mistake in the vaccum. You need to apply pressure on your opponent so they are more likely to make mistakes or slip up. But ding's openings doesn't seem to apply any pressure on gukesh is what hikaru is trying to say

Here's what I'll say: if Gukesh wins the match, Ding will look like a total idiot for being so casual about his prep and his questionable strategy. But if Ding wins the match, he'll look like a living legend. Think about it like this: whenever Real Madrid plays like shit for 85 minutes then scores 2 goals in as many minutes out of nowhere and goes on to win the UCL for the 145th time, all that history remembers is the comeback they pulled off and the trophy they won, not the overall performance

Being able to handle the pressure is also an important aspect of a World Championship match, just like preparation and time management

Ding said that his seconds have been preparing openings for a while, can't remember exactly but I think it was three months, before he started working with them together. He also said he started preparing three weeks ago (at the time of the interview) and that he prepared significantly more than for the last wcc. (Again he gave a more specific answer about the time he spent and the comparison, I wanna say it was double the amount of prep time but I can't remember for sure)
