Oh wow, what a fantastic video - we watched as a bed time story as we usually do when there’s a new Kate Louise story up! Tomorrows’ task is to make a bean chilli to dehydrate. And then… suddenly our little channel gets a mention from the Aussie master of dinghy cruising videos!!!!! WOAH! Children suddenly jumping on beds and whooping! Thank you so much, dear sir. We so hope to sail with you one day.

Paul, well done. On second view (at the end) I noticed how you "softened" your jibe with catching the sheet assm as it raced across the horse - as well as being the stop for your missen boom - one with your craft you are! thanks again for your world view being available up here, appreciate you work/play. My biggest life crisis happened about a year ago. And i have been building my life back from nothing past year. And im finally in a reach of making my own pram dinghy next summer. Thanks Paul, great to see you got out into the porridge! BTW after many a lost hat I have about 35cm of line (about 2mm) on the back and then either a small safety pin to attach that to the back of my collar, or tie a figure of eight and feed that through the top button hole of my shirt and that has prevented any (recent) hat lose - and it is always a horror to see that favorite hat sinking without trace! It also means that I don't have to have the hat on Jubilee Clip setting ultra tight - stopping blood flow to my head!! All the best - Piers

I second this. Big gobs of REAL butter, none of that fake butter rubbish! And when at home I add more milk than water, and warm the milk first. Usually means you end up with ready to eat spud that doesn't need to be heated any further. And as you were doing, stir it with a fork. In fact, "stir" is the wrong word. You need to mash it from side to side in the bowl/pan. If you stir it, somehow it elongates the starch molecules and it goes 'stringy'. tastes the same, but the texture goes 'funny'. Ask me how I know!!! lol

Thanks Jeremy....We are lucky in Sydney that there are many waterways within an easy drive. If you look at Raid Sydney on facebook there are often dinghys for sale posted, which makes the search a bit easier. Or if you have time to build there is also a wealth of experience there, just ask a question and there will always be an answer...many guys have built there own boats. Whatever you do don't give up and turn the dream into reality, you won't regret it, Cheers Paul

Hi Paul, I have dehydrator for about 20 years but only did dry apricots to make then even more dry. But now have to try this new way of doing food to last longer. And way , your anchor looks like it could hold a 35 yacht. I just came back from doing a delivery of a big power boat from Pittwater to Perth and then another one from Perth to Port Lincoln. We would use at 9 knots about 20 lt per engine or when we did 19 knots we used around 120 lt per engine. I think it cost around $18,000 for fuel get to get to Perth. But I would rather sail .

Wow but I bet $18,000 is cheaper than shipping on a truck. My anchor is a 6kg, I had a 5kg but got badly dragged in 25 knots up at Myall Lakes(sandy bottom) so I bought a bigger one. Unfortunately it doesn't fit in the anchor locker,thanks for watching , Cheers Paul

Hi Paul, I share your angst re tacking to windward - and I noticed in your earlier videos that you often lingered on your wake - which showed the typical slick of excessive leeway..... May I offer some thoughts? Lee helm is especially handicapping with low aspect keels. The rudder subtracts from the effectiveness of the after portion of the keel. I kept raking my own mast further and further aft until the boat looked like a Baltimore clipper! - but it helped! Raking the mast will also help free the jib leech. On your boat it is hard for you to see how the jib is setting - but you might try some tell tales further up the jib luff - at the top - so that you can avoid oversheetng the jib..... Tight and hooked jib leeches kill the jib's effectiveness - but they also back-wind the main - destroying it's power too..... it is a better fault to have excessive twist in the jib so that the slot is perfectly free and open. For a quick trial may I suggest you try going to windward without the jib at all (or with it part furled)? Sailing without the jib is a whole new ballgame - but you can release the mizzen sheet as you come head to wind and back the mizzen to help push the stern around. Sorry for the long Post but I hope you may find something helpful there..... Good sailing! Frank
@SailingKateLouise
@SailingKateLouise 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks Frank for some really useful tips. I have raked the mast back a little as the lashings stretch a bit but I will try raking back a bit further. I did also have tell tales on the jib but they came off and I should replace them....my bad.Thanks for watching and your help,cheers Paul

@SailingKateLouise
@SailingKateLouise 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Joma, I have whisker poles for both the jib and the main but I normally only take the jib pole. This was the first time I have used it and yes it does make a difference, the designer Derek Ellard reckons between 1-2 knots when the lug sail is poled out. Which makes sense as without a boom it's hard to get the main to work efficiently when running. I hope this helps , thanks for watching, Cheers Paul

Great video, We live off grid so depend on sun and wind for our power, how much power does your food dehydrator use and how long does it take to dry a typical batch. We do quite well power wise, but better to check it out before we buy something that will suck too much out of the battery bank. We have plenty for dish washer and clothes washer, but they are only on for an hour at most. Looking forward to your visit to Orkney😉
@SailingKateLouise

Hi Robin, it takes about 6-7 hours to dehydrate 7 meals. It's rated at 450 w 240v at 58degrees C. I'm not sure what that equates to in amp hours. Or how much sun you get in the Orkneys. It might use too much power if you are off grid. Thanks for watching, Cheers Paul

@@SailingKateLouise thanks for that Paul. I might take a closer look online. It might be that the 450 watts is on and off with a thermostat. My wife's electric iron is 2000w but it only draws that for about 5 seconds every minute. I do like the idea of drying food to preserve it.

I buy bulk dehydrated potato and dehydrate the onion at home. If you like mustard, add some mustard powder. Mmmm.

Hey Paul, just a quick question on your dehydrated meals. Do you need to refrigerate the meals or are they okay room temperature? If ok out of the fridge any idea how long they might last? We have one of those dehydrators- from Aldi. Enjoy your videos. A bit like Roger Barnes without his school boy French lol

Hi Col, I've always kept them in the freezer because that's what they did in a video I saw. There are many dehydrating videos on KZbin. I think they would keep just as well at room temperature as that is what 'Preppers' do in the States. The preppers reckon they can last 5 years.... Vacuum sealed is best. Thanks for watching Cheers Paul
