I inherited a two panel screen from my father in law and it was covered in very unusual early Toile de Jouy in bad condition. I decided to take it off, repair it, back it after washing then put it back on. Under the fabric was some gorgeous Zuber wallpaper in bad condition but I kept as much as possible to frame and use. Under that was another paper, it was almost archeology. The frame was in such bad shape in the end I didn't put it all back together but I kept it, maybe one day. I love this book, I bought it some months ago and have lent it to a couple of friends who have bought a lovely chateau an hour from me as they were thinking of decorating their dining room with murals. I suggested they hand paint them as the husband is an artist.

I think you should do all the walls in your dining room. Looks unfinished with just the accent wall~ you have lovely taste and doing the entire room would be lovely

You inspired me to purchase the book. I was born & raised in Hawaii, my grandmother had wallpaper in her bathroom. Here we are in the middle of the Pacific (1950’s) & the paper designs were of colonial America. This theme seemed totally foreign but l too would make up stories about the various landscapes. Thank you as l build up courage to one day paper a wall or two or three…❣️

Ruth you are sweet. I had never been introduced to it until design school in 1988, and then my professor, a fine southern lady, pronounced it "zoo-bar". So, I did too, for years. I'm so glad you commented!

I once read that a man bought an old store that was lined in one of Zuber's murals. He dismantled the mural carefully and sold it for the same price he bought the store ! My house had Zuber paper in the main bedroom, it was plain graded blue from light at bottom to dark at top and the woodwork was painted to match. When the owner ( I rent ) asked the decorators to prepare the house of me they stripped off the wallpaper thinking that it had faded ! I wasn't too sad because I'm not a 'blue' person. When it happened I ordered the painters to stop doing anything to the house so I inherited an enormous 7 bedroom house that needs completely redecorating. I have four rooms done so far, one almost done and one started in my head. Three more bedrooms will follow and the large living room with ornate french doors that give onto an inner courtyard that I have done over in an Italian style. I am going to panel to three walls to mask the damp damage as the house had sat empty for many years. The fourth wall is panelled in 18 the century, it came from a local manor house 'renovated' in the 60's !

Some William Morris wallpaper is still hand blocked in England. Natchez, Mississippi has several antebellum homes with the original Zuber paper.

Yes- she saved a mural (Scenic America by Zuber) from a home in Maryland that was being torn down. It was then installed in the White House. 💕
