Man, Dinotopia is such a creative and artistic take on dinosaurs. I just wish that there was an animated adaptation movie of it, preferably by Studio Ghibli. Personally, I dream that Hayao Miyazaki himself make one. Admittingly though in reality, that is extremely not possible due to his current age and him already making what he considers his last film.

I'm actually working to adapt Dinotopia to the Cairn system! Emphasis on exploration, diplomacy, and botany. Most of the dangers come from the environment rather than predators.

Two things to note about Gurney's Giganotosaurus. 1. It seems that he took more inspiration from animals like Tyrannosaurus and Allosaurus in how to draw the head. Of course, to be fair, Giganotosaurus is notorious for having pretty scant cranial remains and during this point in time, the Carcharodontosaurs were an enigmatic bunch. It wouldn't be until after the turn of the millennium that the morphology and evolutionary relationships of these dinosaurs was more fleshed out. 2. The Dinotopia color palette for this dinosaur was a pretty popular scheme. It was referenced in Warpath: Jurassic Park as an unlockable skin and was reused by Gurney in a National Geographic issue where it's chasing down Gasparinasaura.

I bought the first Dinotopia book after watching the first video on the series and immediately fell in love with it. I bought the second book a few days ago and the timing of this videos release is perfect. This is a series that I love and I am elated that you’re coving it. Breathe deep, seek peace my friend.

This book was my first exposure to Dinotopia. Never got much of the plot to this one growing up cause I was so focused on the captivating illustrations. Also, if I can make a recommendation, I would suggest the Dinotopia digest novels. They're short and aimed at preteens but do add to the lore of Dinotopia. I remember the book "River Quest" in particular quite fondly.

I read along with my copy as you went over this. Due to the book being half images and half text, and also me having it as a child, I didn't recall much of the plot line and I am floored that die to this video I have closure about the the people from posiedos. I figured it was an unsolved plotline, but here. It is, explained in detail sitting on my shelf for 26 years. Thanks!

I would like to point out that the art he did of the dinosaurs wearing big feathery things seems ironic seeing as how we know that a lot of dinosaurs did in fact have feathers. In the game we would call that foreshadowing lol

Would like to see a new live-action adaptation of these books as a series on Netflix, Disney+, HBO Max, or Apple TV+. Just make sure it’s more faithful to the source materials.
@nicholaslienandjaja18157 ай бұрын
Also, my ideas for said adaptation: There are other multilingual dinosaurs other than ceratopsians (my guess: raptors, pachycephalosaurs, and small ornithopods). Unlike many previous adaptations, large carnivorous theropods will be portrayed as they are in the books: Not monstrous or evil, but simply aggressive, predatory, and uncivilized, but also reasonable, respectful, and can even be befriended. There will also be more obscure or recently discovered species included. Updated appearance, e.g. feathers. Instead of being hinted as bad, using strutters will be portrayed as completely neutral (and later used to help elderly dinosaurs who can no longer work). More worldbuilding on the Rainy Basin (my idea: The predators live in clans similar to that of warriors, but they also respect the hunt, e.g. hunting for fun or revenge, sadism, and hunting in excess are seen as unforgivable crimes and sins in predator tribes).

Some of the young adult books and the first novel by Alan Dean Foster cover more of the theropod society, they're all very well done in my opinion and I would love to see them covered by you! They're all cosigned by Gurney and so are considered canon to the lore of his books.

Those "strutters" are undeniably similar to Dinobots. I never read these books, I was in my 20s when they first came out. They sound like they would still be really cool to get into.
@jkosch8 ай бұрын
I think the strudder that looses it's head-shield is more based on a _Chasmosaurus_ than on a _Triceratops_ . The more rectangular frill and the more equal size of the brow and the nose horn point to that identification.

The only dinosaur ever mentioned specifically is Triceratops, but I suppose its possible Gurney used other ceratopsians as references for Arthur's strutter design

I once saw a Cirroceras shell exposed in some french guy's garden. To be honest, his whole garden was full of fossil, exposed for anyone to see. It was a pretty good spot to find fossil ; as a matter of fact, i stumbled upon what i believed to be a rather big ammonite (60/70cm in diameter). Unfortunately, it was broken appart ; by a plough i guess, and i had no means to dig, transport nor repair it, so i left it...

i totally get not wanting to force yourself to do something like this so "timely", especially when there's other content possibilities for your line of work here. me, i'm an amateur writer (as yet unpublished, except for a fanfic that i post online but take about as seriously as what i want to eventually turn into actual books) and i basically need to really feel _inspired_ in order to write something, even if i try to "make" myself write more on whatever i'm currently on by trying to brainstorm when i have downtime from everything else. which usually means "as i'm trying to go to sleep" and doesn't always mean much, but that's typically just if i've hit writer's block :P
