The Final Open Day at Dinting Railway Centre - 16th April 1990. Anything that could be moved was shunted outside the shed on that last day producing some unusual sights.

This was where my love of steam started. I still have memories of being fascinated by these glorious machines. I was probably there that day as a 5 year old with my dad. Later on we'd go to the Midlands Railway Centre to get my steam fix.

It's interesting that the railway centre is now something of a piece of railway preservation history, Steamport, Steamtown and Dinting. Interesting relics of the first generation of railway preservation.

Went to steam town in its pomp , Southport once, not too long before they moved and got as close as Guide Bridge to see 76 s and forties but not quite to dinting. A shame.

Nice video bringing back a lot of memories from the first days with Frank and his pet 0-4-0 petrol engine Jacob through the arrival of Bahamas after restoration at Hunslet. I was lucky enough to spend several years as a trainee fireman before emigrating to Canada in 1975. Sad to see the current state of dereliction after all the years of work by the members. Who remembers horizontal rain during the working parties ?

Fantastic video, thanks for keeping the memory of Dinting alive. What a busy place, it a real shame it had to close. I'm now a life member of BLS but would love to travel back in time to the heyday of Dinting.

A bad day when Dinting closed, all through a disagreement in my opinion! Much missed by those of us that were there for many years.

Good video nice to see it as it was, I went there many times for afternoons out when I was younger. I remember many big names there Bahamas, Leander, Scots Gardsman, Unrestored Bitten, such a shame to see it all unused unloved and falling to bits now. Still interesting to have a look round though.

At least some of this ex railway centre's property ended up brought by the Keighley and Worth Valley Railway or other heritage railways, am I right?

They relocated to Ingrow on the Keighley and Worth. Same team different location. They had to downsize but still got some the locos and brakevan and some other stock

It was tragic how this ended up? This land got acquired for hotel and housing development with the planning applications subsequently being rejected. The engine shed now lies in a derelict, vandalised and ruinous state when it could been so much more. I did some urbex there recently and found it concealed in what is now a heavily forested area near Dinting Vale viaduct. So very sad to see as they originally planned to open the former Longdendale line to steam once again through Hadfield. This is a terrible loss to the people of Glossop as it would have made a fantastic tourist attraction and brought revenue into the town once more. What was really amazing at that time was that the then operational and now defunct British Rail did not even operate Sunday services to Glossop and Hadfield so sharing the line through the Dinting delta junction would have been completely feasible but for their incessant refusal to co operate. This would never have happened today. I only hope somebody can acquire this engine shed and develop it into a sympathetically preserved home conversion similar to the one at Broadbottom. I fear demolition will beckon if it stands in this state of disrepair much longer.

@@MrDegsy69 certainly was. Unfortunately the shed cannot be listed due to the amount of modifications done to it (roof etc)

@@zippy963 it would still make a fantastic property conversion none the less. They did something like this to the engine sheds on the other side of the viaduct at Broadbottom. At least it would be allowed to stand this way as once it is demolished it is gone forever.

I think the story goes along the lines of someone being able to make more money building houses then running a museum. When it came down to it, they found the land to be contaminated and not cost effective to clear. I’m not 100 percent on that but I think it’s a close guess. Very short sighted as it would be a great boost for local economy. Last went there open when I was 8. It’s all over grown now and the station roof on the museum side has now collapsed.I lived on dinting road and loved that place. If I ever won big on the euro millions it’s the first thing I’d set about doing....buy the land and reopen it

@@jameshardy4354 We had a guided tour around Carnforth with our traction engine club a few years ago. Having remembered it in its heyday it was sad to see the crumbling concrete of the shed and other structures. Yard was full of of diesels, many stored for spares and sidings full of parcels vans. It would be a health and safety nightmare if it were open to the public.
