Ronnie James Dio was 40 years old and out of 2 major bands by that point... Rainbow sacked him in 1979... and Black Sabbath sacked him in 1982 after he was accused of trying to change the mixes of their 'Live Evil' live album... Ronnie took Sabbath's then-drummer Vinny Appice with him to form a new band... Ronnie started writing new songs - he could play bass and keyboards, while he auditioned musicians for his new band Dio... Irish guitarist Vivian Campbell joined the band. Then, Ronnie's collaborator from Rainbow, bassist Jimmy Bain also joined the Dio line-up and more songs came together... Sabbath's label Warner Bros. Records loved the demos and signed Dio immediately. 1983 was an interesting year - Black Sabbath hired Deep Purple vocalist Ian Gillan and recorded their next album 'Born again'... Original Sabbath singer Ozzy Osbourne was roaring back w/ success after 2 solo albums and his 3rd album 'Bark at the Moon' was released late that year... But it was Dio that started from scratch and captured a truly exceptional debut album 'Holy Diver' that year, a record that Ronnie produced as well. It was a hit on radio and MTV w/ the singles - 'Rainbow in the dark'... 'Holy Diver'... as well as fan faves like "Don't talk to strangers"... 'Stand up and shout' ... Fans in Europe and America were excited to see the new Dio band and concert ticket sales were exceptional as the band performed Ronnie's songs from Rainbow and Black Sabbath in concert as well...Claude Schnell (keyboards) joined Dio for the tour. The album charted in the US and UK ...and sold gold, eventually 2x platinum in the US. Ronnie Dio said, "It was a very magical time. The right people came together at the right moment."

We were all 3 in my backyard and listened to the whole album over and over again while the uncle rolled and smoked the biggest joint I've ever seen. This is tied for the best debut album ever.

Great reaction, Ronnie James Dio was also the lead singer for Black Sabbath for the song 'Heaven and Hell' and was the lead singer for Rainbow for the song 'Man on the Silver Mountain'; Plus his own solo work. So his voice is part of some of the most iconic Metal music there is. D & D was created in the mid 70's in the 1960's he formed the band 'Elf' because of his love for Lord of the Rings and the Hobbit and that predated D & D by half a decade. :) But your feelings were pretty close. Tolkien and other Arthurian tales and Nordic folklore and fairy tales inspired D & D. Thanks for sharing your passion. Please keep sharing. Chris

This music video might seem a bit cheesy to some people, but still fun and Dio's vocals are amazing. I really suggest Dio's song "Rainbow in the dark" The live performance from 2005 is good qaulity. Even though Dio is in his 60's in that video he still sounded fantastic. However maybe you prefer an earlier performance. Its your choice.

Yeah Mills. Depending on how tall u r, u may b taller than him - he was 5’4” (162-ish cm). Dio made 3 albums w/Black Sabbath. 1) Heaven and Hell - Neon Knights - Children of the Sea - Lady Evil - Heaven and Hell 2) Mob Rules - Voodoo - The Sign of the Southern Cross - E5150 (as the intro to Mob Rules) - Mob Rules - Country Girl (its not a country tune) - Over and Over 3) Dehumanizer I have the first 2 but have never listened to the 3rd. The first 2 albums r pretty good.

This version is somewhat truncated, on the studio version the guitar solo is another four bars longer. Fun fact: Dio was in fact also a bass player, so he would be even more of a kindred spirit of yours! Though he only played the bass on one album, the 1972 self-titled debut by his first heavy band Elf. For their second album, they added a bassist to the lineup (the late great Craig Gruber) to allow Ronnie more freedom and mobility as a frontman. He did however keep playing bass during rehearsal jams, particularly during his time with Black Sabbath putting songs together with Black Sabbath's guitarist and main man Tony Iommi. Another fun fact: Ronnie's second cousin and good friend Joey DeMaio is the bassist and leader of arguably the most dramatic, sword-and-sorcery oriented heavy metal band ever - Manowar. Well worth a listen when in D&D mode, I assure you. Essential Dio listening: With Rainbow: "Man on the silver mountain", "Stargazer", "Long live rock'n'roll", "Kill the king", "Gates of Babylon". With Black Sabbath: "Heaven and hell", "Die young", "Neon knights", "Lonely is the word", "Sign of the Southern Cross", "Voodoo", "Country girl" (about the perils of falling in love with a witch!), "Falling off the edge of the world", "Computer God", "After all", "TV crimes", "I". With Dio: "Don't talk to strangers", "Rainbow in the dark", "Shame on the night", "We rock", "The last in line", "Egypt", "Sacred heart", "Rock'n'roll children", "Hungry for heaven", "Dream evil", "All the fools sailed away", "Night people", "Sunset superman", "Naked in the rain".

Such an underrated song. Ronnie was ahead of his time on this one. The first verse is about a young lady that has been suffering from depression from her teens through her twenties. The second verse is about a young man who is afraid to come out as being gay. They both find the solution which is to become invisible, go away, commit suicide. Nobody sang about that stuff then. And yes, it rocks hard

He started the MALOYK; Metal HORNS gesture, or the EVIL EYE, taught to him by his grandmother. Not by the egotistical Gene Simmons. DIO once said, that, if Simmons could, he would try to patent AIR.
