Who let the wolves out? Who, who, who, who? THE SONG - "Lock Up the Wolves" is the sixth track of the same-titled fifth studio album by the heavy metal band Dio. Writing credits go to vocalist Ronnie James Dio, guitarist Rowan Robertson, and former bassist Jimmy Bain who left the band in 1989. The song was not released as a single. The album was recorded at Granny's House Studios in Nevada in 1990 and released on May 15, 1990. At the time of recording, the entire band, except for Ronnie, had been replaced by new members. The album did fairly well in Europe reaching #16 in Germany and #28 in the UK but did not chart in Canada and peaked at #61 on the Billboard 200 chart on Jun 9, 1990 in the US. All iterations of the band Dio revolved around frontman Ronnie James Dio who was born Ronald James Padavona. He was a tenor who claimed never to have taken any vocal lessons although he listened to opera while growing up and was influenced by Mario Lanza. In 1975, he joined Ritchie Blackmore in the post Deep Purple band Rainbow. Four years later he joined Black Sabbath after they fired Ozzie Osbourne. After a few years, conflicts developed and, in 1982, Ronnie left Sabbath to embark on a solo career. The various versions of the band Dio lasted until 2004 and he continued with other projects until his death, from stomach cancer, in May 2010. THE DRUMMER on "Lock Up the Wolves" was Simon Wright (replaced here by Sina). When he was almost 20 he joined AC/DC, replacing Phil Rudd. He recorded three albums with them and left, in November 1989 to join Dio. This was originally intended to be a collaboration. In turning it into a drum cover, Sina's dad Mike used the audio / video recording Sina made on Oct 10, 2016 and reunited it with the other original Dio tracks - as they normally do for a drum cover.

This had to be almost the same time the huge fan favorite and "Masterpiece" "Here I Go Again" video was done. Pretty much the same look. I love watching the evolution of your kit. Look at that ride way out there in right field! :) I am a huge fan of early Dio, Last In Line and Holy Diver but never really remember this album. I tell you the backing track really kicks ass. The mix for this sounds super sweet! Ahhh Ronnie James, a true legend. Seen these guys multiple times. Remember not being able to hear for a few days after. Thats how shows were back in the day. Output volumes were MUCH louder. I think this will sit quite well with any Dio fan. Awesome job Sina!

Take a trip back in time Thanks, Sina, for this lovely bit of history. October 10th 2016 means you recorded the drum part 2 days after launching your Patreon account. So all the lucky ones who joined right at the start get a precious xtra. ;-( The drum set obviously went through bigger changes than you did. This is true Sina all the way through the track. Forceful playing with special attention to the alloy, concentrated work with only the hint of a smile, maybe your younger self being a little more ‘taken away by the song’ than you would allow yourself today . - The song itself drags along somewhat clumsily, but this gives Ronnie the opportunity to fill the space with his extraordinary voice. And you take the chance and delight us with a LOT of drum work, though not in the fast style of ‘Burn’ or ‘Dance with the Devil’, but with many tom and cymbal work to fill the voids. Great to hear and watch! For many reasons a good decision to share this work, Sina. And somewhere on this globe a grief-struck blockhead will bite his cap and start a week of wailing. Dieses stück habe ich bisher nicht gekannt. Ich tauche gerne in unbekannte musik ein! Schade dass das zusammenspiel nicht zustandegekommen ist, aber gut dass wir es doch noch zu hören kriegen. Beim anhören fallen mir einige längere pausen des schlagzeugs auf, und danach äußerst präzise einsätze. Sinas timing ist einfach perfekt und könnte kaum noch besser werden. Es steckt auch trotz des nicht so atemberaubenden tempos unglaublich viel energie darin, und konzentration bis zum schluss. Professionell schon vor drei jahren. (Und wenn Sina barfuß spielt, ist das jedesmal ein plus obendrauf!)

You know --- I HAVE heard this song before! It's been quite a while though. Ronnie has extreme METAL music. Ronnie James Dio! A.K.A. Ronald James Padavona. [The man on the silver mountain!] ... 1942 - 2010. [67 yrs]. He Played in the Vegas Kings? in 1957? He was 15 yrs! - 'Ronnie and the Rumblers' , Elf, Rainbow, Black Sabbath, ... Dio. Ronnie graduated from the State University of New York at Buffalo , My Home town B.S. in Pharmacology ... Well that was the correct degree, HuH?. Great music, very sorry we lost him on 5/16/2010.... my condolences to Wendy! Stomach Cancer? [people ... we need to find a cure for this stupid disease] Now we have Sina ... Actually I was listening to this song and I needed some inspiration on how to play the drum pattern like this as I'm not a drummer but doing some beats lol. I discovered Dio's music while tracing some heavy metal bands as I'm really more of a sabbath guy haha then I discover rainbow. This was a great cover Sina. I've listened to a lot of Dio In my years. He is in my library here on KZbin. I don't know who you would have used in your collaboration that wasn't but a great candidate for vocals certainly would have been Rob L. Ronnie was a great entertainer. He told a story about the devils horns sign he would do. When he was a kid he would be playing on the street and his Grandma would lean out the window using those two fingers would point at her eyes and out to Ronnie and back at her eyes and say "I'm watching you". He loved his fans. Later in his short life, when he would address his fans he would speak to them with such respect and almost gentleman like. Then he would turn right around sing like the bad ass singer he was. Favorite album, 'Holy Diver'. Favorite tune"Rainbow in the Dark". There is plenty of time Sina. Bring us a collaboration with something from Ronnie. Anything. Thanks for sharing this. : )

Thanks again Sina. When I tell people I was stationed at Oahu, Hawaii in the U.S. Army , it was still tough. One bright spot was going to see Dio with opening act Dokken in Honolulu. It's amazing the versatility you have . What can't you cover ?

Hi Sina, what you wrote at the beginning of the song makes a proverb coming in my mind: "who does it by itself makes for three". Good job! I usually don't go crazy for this kind of "gloomy metal", but your accurate performance (and the guitar solo,too)makes it absolutely enjoyable. I recognized your "old" "sober gray" drum kit and it's still beautiful.
