Of course part 4 and onwards most stands are humanoid that can punch good. But the world and star platinum were the only ones in part 3 to be like that. Humanoids were rare enough, but even the crusaders weren’t the same. Hierophant is weaker and shoots projectiles, Magicians red looks strong but mostly uses flames. Silver chariot uses its sword. So how similar star platinum and the world are really does stand (heh hahahaha) out initially compared to all the other ones.

He says "If I had attacked any closer, I would've been done for" Insinuating that The World CANNOT operate outside of a 10 meter range, and so if he had attacked further within its effective range from DIO, it would've been able to completley wail on Heirophant Green and kill him as opposed to just being punched away. Dio also insinuates this by saying that he cannot use The World if he doesnt get closer, and backed this up by saying that Heirophant Green was a bit too far to do anything serious to him, and he was "Sent flying out of The World's range." Yes, Star Platinum can operate well outside its effective range, but the range at which it is most powerful is infact 2 meters. The World simply has a better effective range, but cannot leave this range at all.

That's why Joseph and Avdol spent several years getting as much info on DIO as they could. Joseph also spent that time getting accustomed to his Stand and it's abilities. That's why once they get Jotaro out of the cell, they return to Holly's house to continue planning. Unfortunately, they were forced to make their move once Holly started dying, so they had to jump the gun on their own plan. Through all the countries they visited, they were on a strict timetable, and I doubt they'd be able to find a powerful enough UV floodlight in the countries they passed by. Now, the SPW definitely could've delivered UV lights to them with the numerous vehicles that they grant the Crusaders, but they decided to get more pertinent items, like food and supplies (Not like the vehicles they were given lasted long anyway).
