Dio and Iron Maiden always had a great stage set up, both use animatronics and lasers and backdrops. Other bands barely used a backdrop curtain. That's why their concerts were so awesome to go to. You got an experience instead of just a show.

So my Puerto Rican Ass's first concert was Dio with Megadeth opening up at UIC pavillion in Chicago 1988. Changed my taste in music forever. Dio was a phenomenal singer and great band leader that made everyone feel comfortable....100% GENTLEMAN ON THE STAGE.

I only got to see Dio once, a bit later in his career (Strange Highways tour I believe), but that was in a club. I wish I could've seen him in an arena setting like this. Once a Dio fan, always a Dio fan!

kitoyobeni1 The 90s was a bad time for Dio in the States, he was mostly playing small clubs at the time. He was selling out arenas in Brazil, Japan and much of Europe, but grunge basically killed the rock and metal scene in America for a decade. I caught him twice on tour in the early 2000s and he started playing larger venues again, though usually by co-headlining with Iron Maiden, Deep Purple and a few other acts. He was always in top form on stage and was really down to earth in person. Almost 10 years to the day of his passing, and it’s still tough to get used to him being gone.

Dio was not just a once in a million singer and performer but also a very warm hearted human being. I once had him sign an autograph card for a terminal ill friend of mine who at that time was already to weak to attend the concert. I went up to Ronnie and asked him to sign and told him who it was for and why. He looked at me, got up and gave me a hug telling me " never loose your faith son. Prayers to your friend." My friend sadly didn't get to see the card that Dio had signed for him. Dio passed away years later due to the same dreadful illness and i was devastated by the news.

Hi RRT, I'm just seeing this. I had a rough day. Had to get a tooth pulled today, and I just woke up....didn't get any sleep last night from the pain. I couldn't take the pain anymore, and had to get that sucker out. Thanks for brightening my morning, and playing my request, and thanks for your dope reaction to Dio once again. That big thing was a dragon, he referenced it somewhere in the lyrics. Great song and great show....the 80s were the bomb!! I wish I could go back to that time again! When you said, "If you don't like Dio, you're a corny-ass person." Such magnificent truth to that!! Dio was and is still the man! Written on his tomb was the name of one of his songs, and it describes him perfectly. "The Man On The Silver Mountain." He was that and much more. Once again you are leaving me with a big smile....with one less tooth! lol Good thing it was in the back of my mouth. I saw him in 84 I think it was and he alwaysput on a great show, and had killer musicians, and great production and vocals. What more could you want. Just killer. Besides being a lyrical writer and a musician, Ronnie also collaborated with the fashion designer for all His costumes, and Ronnie also helped come up with the stage appearance. By the way, the dragon has a name, he's called Dean. Ronnie told in an interview how Dean the Dragon, at the end of the very last concert for that tour, gave one last roar and then his head tilted down, his eyes went dark and he never worked again. Ronnie also lamented the loss of interesting stage productions after the '80's were over, and said as much in several later interviews. Ronnie definitely had a strong showmanship edge to Himself. Glad you are liking Dio. You should check out his return to Black Sabbath in 1992 on the "Dehumanizer" album. A few outstanding tracks are "Time Machine" (wayne's world version) and "Sins of the Father". They kick ass on both of those tunes!!!

Not quite a corny person, but that would have been a hell of a show in person, and Dio's a frickin' singing god, not many heavy metal/hard rock front men I can think of that would have been on an operatic stage if those genres never took off. Leave the Dragon alone, it's cool :-D Reminds me of ShowBiz Pizza back in the day with their stage shows. Billy Bob and the Rock-a-Fire explosion, remember them? EDIT: Felt like I was watching a live-action rock opera 2'nd gen Dungeons and Dragons game play out on stage... which is awesome in it's own right!

This is just a middle of the road song IMO, he's got at least 4 better albums in his solo career alone, but it's probably the best live recording of a Dio performance I've ever seen. He was in his vocal prime here (so many videos on YT are when he was old and his voice was shot) and the recording quality was amazing for live video in the 80s. You really gotta listen to more of his Sabbath songs though. Heaven & Hell and The Mob Rules are the two best albums he ever worked on IMO, not a single weak track on either record.

Great to see this old footage. This was Dio's commercial peak and the tour where he had the biggest budget. It was also the one where I thought the theatrics took over from the music and I was disappointed with it for that reason. The next tour, Dream Evil, was stripped down, back into smaller halls, and was a much more satisfying experience for me. Guitarist Craig Goldie took over the job halfway through the tour when the original guitarist, Vivian Campbell either quit or was fired. That led to long standing bad feeling between him and Dio and I don't think Dio ever reached the same creative levels again in his solo career.

Been listening to Dio since his time with Black Sabbath and into his solo years. The Sacred Heart album was actually a low point in his career (if there is such a thing as a Dio low). It was just a time where it seemed that Ronnie and the band were no longer hungry, there was some burnout and some dispute with the original guitarist over contracts and money. I would have to say that I understand why the guitarist Vivian Campbell felt the way he did at the time and I agree with him that Dio should have been paying the band more money. Morale was low as was creativity and although I greatly love Sacred Heart, it simply did not have the same bite that Holy Diver and Last In Line had so much of. SH was over produced, didn't feel as raw as the previous two. But this low point didn't last very long. The next album Dream Evil was very well done.
