I am Italian and I get emotional every time I see this performance by Diodato, so full of meaning of what we were experiencing in that lockdown!

This is an ancient roman arena in the northern Italian city of Verona. It's a bit smaller than the Roman one but still fairly intact and very much used for many events. It was empty here due to the Italian corona virus lockdown at this time last year.

This was the soundtrack of Italy's very first lockdown. It was heartbreaking watching the Arena di Verona empty, and the sorrounding streets too.

This was basically the soundtrack of the first lockdown in Italy, right after the pandemic break through. The empty arena is a sign of the time we're living in

And here is the translation: English translation You know what I think? That I shouldn’t be thinking, that if I think about it then, I’m an animal and if I think about you, you’re a soul But maybe it’s this storm that brings me to you And I know I shouldn’t be found without an umbrella, even though I realized that as far as I run away I always come back to you Who make noise, here and I don’t know if it’s good for me if your noise suits me But you make noise, yes and I can’t stand this unnatural silence between you and me And I’m walking without talking with nowhere to go I’m wearing down my shoes and perhaps my shoes know where to go That I find myself in the same places again, exactly those places that I should have avoided and I pretend I don’t remember and I pretend to forget But I realize that as far as I run away I always come back to you Who make noise, here and I don’t know if it’s good for me if your noise suits me But you make noise, yes and I can’t stand this unnatural silence between you and me But you make noise, yes and I can’t stand this unnatural silence And now I don’t want to do without that beautiful noise you make

With this song Diodato won the Sanremo Festival 2020. During the festival week usually you can hardly get away from news of it, all media are focused on that. It wsa the same in 2020, February. And then, when the festival buzz subsided, we suddenly woke up to Covid, and everything went down from there. So Italy was locked down, the streets were empty, the cities were deserted, and there was such an unnatural silence in the air that this song could not have been more fitting at any other time. Funny thing, Sanremo 2020, winner: Diodato with "Fai Rumore" ("make noise"). Sanremo 2021, winner: Maneskin with "Zitti e buoni" ("shut up and be good").

What still gives me chills is that the chorus says “make some noise here, because I can’t stand this unnatural silence between you and me” and at the end it also says “and I can’t stand to be without that beautiful noise you make anymore” and he sang this in a completely deserted arena, no noise from the public, and it really hit it all home that the contact between people was missing. Which is why the performance at ESC the next year was so cathartic, because it also started this way but then the audience was singing along and the dancers were all around him, holding him like it meant we could all finally be around each other again. It makes me cry every time. I always watch this performance, and then the one with the public and dancers. It just hits so good.

This was supposed to be Italy's entry for Eurovision 2020... instead it became one of the symbols of the first lockdown due to the pandemic in Italy. He still got a stage to perform on... the Arena di Verona, empty and illuminated by lights in the colors of the Italian flag and EU flag. You can actually find videos of Italian people singing this from their balconies, all together, their voices breaking the silence of the city. The empty streets, the quiet city, just felt so unnatural. ❤❤❤

@@HighlyCombustibleReacts I lived in Italy and been there, it's literally colossal , hence the names " colosseum"
@babyjane79123 жыл бұрын
@@TheKeystoneChannel Actually, the name Colosseum refers only to the Amphitheatre Flavium (in Rome), not to all amphiteathres, because in ancient time there was (near by the Amphitheatre Flavium) a 30-metre (98 ft) bronze statue built in honor of Emperor Nero, called Colossus of Nero. The statue sometime later (around 4th century AD) disappeared or was destroyed but the name Colosseum rimaned to the Amph. Flavium, because it was huge. So, it's not correct to call the Arena (or Amphiteatre) of Verona ''the colosseum''
