Today, let's do some experiments with RC snubber networks in my Solid State Tesla Coil. Let's test the IGBT halfbridge using an inductive load and do some oscilloscope measurements. The snubber networks limit the voltage overshoots on the transistors and the dV/dt, so the transistors don't fail.
The first episode:
• SSTC pt. 1 - intro
The next episode:

I always enjoy your videos! just one thing about the probing when you have a large coil driven by pulses. It can easily induce voltages in the oscilloscope probes (thru the loop formed by the gnd connection of the probe). The magnitude of the induced voltage depends on many factor of course, so it could be small or large, but it worth checking to make sure the readings are not thrown off a lot.

When you bypassed those resistors, the ringing didn't have that high amplitude as the overshoot with the resistors, which brings me to a question, what is better.. A short high overshoot or long ringing?

This is done in single transistor things or in a 2-transistor forward power supply, because they only switch in 1 polarity. You can't do this in a halfbridge. The opposite transistor would charge the capacitor with no resistor in series (during hard switching).

The body diodes of transistors are usually very slow acting and have generally pretty high voltage drops. I would recommend trying some fast acting schottky diodes, superbarrier diodes, or TVS diodes with low capacitance and high reverse recovery time near the transistor. Unfortunately you're dealing with through hole, because SMD would offer the best results in terms of series inductance.

Would a low ESR decoupling capacitor right across the upper IGBT Collector leg and lower IGBT Emitter leg help with the spikes? As sometimes its caused by the inductance of the DC bus between the fets and rail splitting capacitors.

How are you finding IGBTs vs MOSFETS for this application? I watched an Infineon webinar regarding their SiC and GaN technology a little while ago and it was quite impressive. Their FETs seem to outperform IGBTs, and in the case of GaN, they don't have body diodes!

We usually have 3x 25A (3 phase) main circuit breaker before the electricity meter. The wall outlets tend to have 16A breakers, sometimes 10A. Some appartments only have 1x 25A main breaker. Those are mostly appartments with gas supply. Having gas powered heating, water heater and stove, 1x 25A supply is enough.

Are you planning to switch the PWM at close to resonant frequency (or slightly higher than resonant frequency)? Because, under that condition, the turn-on lossed on IGBT is minimised. Without a closed loop control, the control of PWM frequency to exactly match the resonant frequency is impossible. With manual control (potentiometer), you will be able to keep a freq higher than resonant (in inductive zone).
@DiodeGoneWild
@DiodeGoneWild 4 жыл бұрын
Of course slightly inductive (tiny bit above resonant) is the best :).

@michaelfisher9671
@michaelfisher9671 4 жыл бұрын
@@drobotk Yes I understand it has to be one of the IGBT diodes since they are the only diodes. But which of the IGBT's and why? When the gate of the low side IGBT is high, the halfbridge output is low. So the diode in the high side IGBT is clearly going to be back biased. Why would the diode in the low side IGBT be forward biased? Maybe when the halfbridge output is low, it is slightly lower than the 0V rail, so the diode conducts?

Snubbers are not a very good solution. the wire wound resistors are highly inductive. Have you tried some fast diodes across the transistors and the two series caps that you have across the line should be located as close to the two HB transistors. By the way, you have a very needy cat that requires a lot of attention. she/he should be allowed to go outside more often. :):)
@DiodeGoneWild
@DiodeGoneWild 4 жыл бұрын
The resistors are of course not wire wound. They are film resistors. The diodes are already inside the transistors. The cat is just indoor cat. My girlfriend would never allow her to go outside. There's to much risk of getting lost, torn apart, ran over, poisoned, catching a disease and so on...
