Nice analysis of the internals of this quasi-sine inverter. This design appears solid, with the five paralleled DC-DC. Modern designs may skimp on such details...but this one may last much longer in actual use. You've not mentioned the efficiency, but a rough calculation base on measurements indicates fairly decent.

11:14 About the lineair regulator: it will have to dissipate quite a lot of energy to regulate the voltage doen from 18V to 14.4V. At say 200W that would be 40Watt. Or did I make a mistake here?

It runs with my 2x 138Ah Valence LiFeMgO-Batteries with 12.6V. It works well but of course I prefer connecting it directly to 230V mains Voltage if possible. But for an hour or so it is good with batteries to cool 7,30 meters Iveco Mobilvetta mobile home down and significantly lower humidity before going to bed if mains Voltage is not available. I've got a scrap inverter like this. It had some water damaged components, and a broken trim-pot from someone trying to 'fix' it. As I didn't have any set up instructions, I thought it best to scrap rather than maybe start a fire by guessing! It has some useful parts though. It looks like the high frequency transformers might have a push - pull secondary. It looks like yours has 5 double diodes for the rectification (one double diode per transformer). The one I have has got 8 dual diodes to form a bridge with all transformers connected in parallel. The low voltage MOSFETs are IRFZ44 in the one I have, and as it's a 2kW version, there are a lot of them (It's an old unit, so there are 4 MOSFETs per transformer - 2 for each leg and there are 8 transformers in total; some of the MOSFETs have already been re-used to repair lower power inverters - even with the protection, people still manage to destroy inverters quite regularly. Edited due to finding the actual board, and taking a look again. I got a few details wrong from memory.

@gabiold
@gabiold 2 жыл бұрын
Actually it is a shame that it isn't a true sine wave inverter as all the hardware bulilt into it to be it as one. The only thing needed to make this a sine wave inverter or arbitrary waveform and frequency you want is to replace the control section of the secondary H-bridge. Could be possible with a microcontroller (DSP maybe, that's how better UPS-es do usually), or could be done in purely analog ways by driving the bridge with a switch mode push-pull driver (SG3525 maybe?) and modulating the reference with an analog sine wave. But if you want XTAL precise frequency, probably is is way easier to do it digitally.

@Debraj1978
@Debraj1978 4 жыл бұрын
@@johncoops6897 True. Sine wave inverters costs more, has higher switching losses in IGBTs/ MOSFETs, but less harmonics (and losses in load). Moreover, sine wave generation needs more complicated software (LUT), PWM module with dead time. Square wave is easier in terms of HW design and also can be implemented entirely in HW.

Good day Sir Thank you very much for all the effort you put in to help us learn about switch mode power supplies, dc-dc converters, inverters and other electronic products. I want to ask your advice please. I have basically the same setup as in your video above. I have a bench power supply (TTi EX354D) with an isolated output that I connected to the battery input wires of a 3kW modified sinewave inverter( Fivestar FS-I008) to power it. The inverter's input is 24VDC. I also have a CRT oscilloscope(Tektronix 465) with an earthed plug. The probes are rated to 600V and I would use the 10X setting. I have repaired the inverter and would like to view its 220V AC output with the oscilloscope. The output stage of the inverter is an H-Bridge with 2 mosfets in parallel for each leg of the bridge. From my understanding, I should be able to connect the scope probe tip and crocodile earth anyway around (Neutral and Live) to the output of the inverter, as the bench power supply is isolated from the mains supply and the inverter's output is also isolated from its own input via the multiple transformers working in parallel, like the one in your video. Should I use AC coupling on the oscilloscope? Can you please confirm from the information given above, that it would be safe to connect it in this way. Please let me know if you need any further information. Thank you very much. Kind regards from South Africa

Those modified sine wave inverters are good for burning stuff out if you use something that has a capacitive dropper or any sensitive circuit in it. Made that mistake with fans and such during power outages in the summer. Expect cool breeze, get magic smoke instead. Not to mention those cables will get hot as hell on a 1000W load. They never seem to use wires big enough for the 100 some odd amps the thing needs.

Word of experience: do NOT plug a Kill-A-Watt meter into the output of these so-marketed "modified sine wave" inverters! While the meter CAN measure the current, voltage, etc., it will also get very hot, due to the non-sinusoidal voltage, and could cause permanent damage if left unattended.

So, you are saying it will be a kill-a-kill-a-watt-kill-a ??

@@johncoops6897 That would be the name of a 3rd device that kills the inverter that the kill-a-watt is plugged into... ;)

WTF... when making such a switching system for the inverter, couldn't they build a switching power supply for the battery??? This doesn't make any sense!
