Fantastic, this is going to breathe new life into my father's old electric screwdriver (Black & Decker Powerdriver 9074 type 1, i can't even find when it was made, probably nearing 30 years by now). It's old Ni-Cd battery pack died off when i was a child and sat in a box for years until i hacked a 5v wall wart into it as a teenager (just tossed the batteries and soldered the cables to the terminals), it wasn't wireless anymore but it's been working for almost a decade just fine and my father loves it, recently however, i realized a li-ion cell would sit perfectly in the battery space of this thing but i didn't knew how to charge it without having to remove the battery to place it in a charger, so looking around i stumbled with your video. I'm sure i can scavenge the parts from the secondary on that circuit to build it myself, no need to even buy one of these chargers. Thank you very much, the best part is that i get to reuse the wall wart... again. :)

This won't protect against two batteries connected against (+ to -) each other, but adding a few ohms of resistance in series with each battery would prevent the self high current charge/discharge from happening. Unfortunately it would take even longer to charge and the charging LED will probably claim fully charged before it really is. Wouldn't be too bad if you leave the batteries trickle charging continuously.

4:28 the way you stripped the wires with a simple cutting wire is simply amazing! How do you do that!?? I'm using an utility knife and a plier, and it takes a while!). Please upload a video about it!

I just made the mod following your video, is it possible to increase the charging current to something like 1 amp? Charging with 0.3 amps is actually really slow.
@keithking19855 жыл бұрын
Yes look up the data sheet of the chip usually its just a matter of swapping a resistor but you can also change the capacitor to a larger one to give more current.

ahh... bobby trap with those swappable polarity, even though the chip have polarity detection but if you connect 2 battery with different direction then it will melt down
@DiodeGoneWild7 жыл бұрын
Yes, it's a trap. They try to save money, so they use just one chip. People can easily put the batteries in different directions, as they are used to it with AA batteries. It's better to use just a single cell charger. Or maybe somehow put a second chip into it.
@theirisheditor7 жыл бұрын
One fix - add one more 1A fuse between the two slots. ;-)
@SianaGearz7 жыл бұрын
Another trap: when you put two cells in that haven't been used all the way together in parallel and are at a different voltage, a high compensation current will flow, as one battery will charge another, with a decent enough likelihood of unpleasant consequences.

Are you crazy? You are using 5V to charge a 4.2V Cell. Or has the chip some kind of voltage regulation?
@keithking19855 жыл бұрын
Yes it steps the voltage down and cuts off at 4.1v I think it said on the label. This guy wouldn't make that mistake either so easily he's fairly on the ball. Anyway that's the voltage that the transformer he replaced was ment to be supplying but it was "doodgee" in his words.

Now that's the way they should of made it :-D Safe and runs off any 5v supply. The chip should not get too hot as it will only have roughly 2v drop across it with a flat battery :-D
@mrjohhhnnnyyy57977 жыл бұрын
zx8401ztv It's still 600mW, which is the limit of the most IC's in the dip-8 package. It's not like tp4056 boards, where the ic has a thermal pad to transfer heat to the board.

No you dont, you are eager to correct that evil english man He he :-D :-D
@mrjohhhnnnyyy57977 жыл бұрын
zx8401ztv What I like to do in such situations is to add a resistor in series with the supply. Value depends on the current, for this one a 1Ohm resistor in the supply will decrease the dissipation on the chip to 0.51W, which is a 15% decrease. The charge chips usually operate fine down to 4.5v, so you can choose the resistor which will drop that amount.

Is this video False Advertising ? I'm watching ching this and thinking "FINALLY" but then this guy whips out a CHARGER !?!?!?! NO MAN ! THAT'S A CHARGER modification !
