Today, let's test a cheap zoomable LED headlamp from eBay. It has a built-in rechargeable Li-Ion battery. Let's see what's inside and how does it work. Well, this one actually doesn't work :).

So glad that you discussed reflector versus projector as these chinese zoomable lights waste most of their light internally and are often not worth having even at very low prices. You can usually get a real light with reflector for just a few dollars more.

Yes! Note that this flashlight's LED is in a black tunnel, which is the worst in terms of efficiency.

Flashlights with a lens shine very dimly, a couple of times dimmer than flashlights with a reflector (at the same LED power) 😢

Your soldering iron just steals the show. Right after the cat and puppy of course. I'm pretty sure you will not spoil the mystery by admitting it, but feels like this soldering iron is not the best for tiny surface mounted smd components. Funny thing, I'm for ex-ussr country but never seen soldering iron like that. We had those huge 40-70W soldering irons with bent "tips" if you can call 8 mm diameter bent copper bar a tip.

these are quite common in our country and some companies still making them because people still using it. I bouth new 150w model year ago. It is great for bigger surfaces and heat up instantly.

I bought a super cheap big one (100W maybe) at the hardware store less than a decade ago. To solder high current low voltage wires. Worked alright initially, but if you left it plugged in for too long, the tip holder would start to glow red hot. Of course the tip was corroded in no time and the screw holding it snapped off. So I threw it out not long after the job was done.
@westelaudio943

@@skyes9461 Because unlike the cheap soldering irons which heat the tip holder from a resistive filament, they only heat the tip (wire) by putting a high current through it from a transformer. A temperature regulated iron of a soldering station, is even better though, as it's easier to handle and you can't overheat anything.
@ernstoud
@ernstoud 2 жыл бұрын
Also since the tip is basically the secondary of a transformer there is a high magnetic field around the tip. This can kill sensitive electronics when there is a coil close by.
@therealjammit
@therealjammit 2 жыл бұрын
Weller still makes the "current" type soldering gun (like DiodesGoneWild has). Unfortunately they've replaced the secondary single turn with aluminum. My aluminum secondary eventually broke (aluminum is weak) and I replaced it with a single turn of the thickest copper wire I could find. Works like a champ. Takes a bit of questionable engineering to attach the tip to the secondary reliably.

If MAVQ6 is not available, to repair the charger, you can use a 1N4007 diode and a 22 ohm resistor(1W) in series between the third and fourth pins of MAVQ6.

I started to distrust every cheap product with Li-ion battery in it in my house. Let alone use a skethy one on my head! Look at that soldering, at least the end of the wires were glued... I am waiting for a short circuit during the whole video.

Are you sure the 2 resistors aren't the other way around? 2 ohms as shunt for measuring the charging current and 1.5k to limit the led current?

Started buying different headlights and flashlights out of curiosity after watching your and Clive's videos. I would buy one and use it to its death, and then buy another, and so on earlier. These days I buy them to check what's inside and how hackable/serviceable they are for their price. And today a piece of Nitecore Tube 2.0 is my usual companion on a key chain (when it's been approved by Clive or you, it's clear that it's good).

Hi, I'm Max from Italy and just discovery your channer. First I'm envious of your soldering gun bat it seem impossible to find it on internet. I have a modern soldering gun and I'm wondering if I can intall a tip like yours. What do you use for making the tip of your soldering gun? Sorry for my poor English... Ps: your video are super intersting!

I bought a similar, but slightly different headlight earlier this year, its spotlight ain't zoomable and it has floodlight mode (a panel of LEDs, COB). Features a magnet on the side and has its mode button on the side - covered with a silicon flap altogether with the microUSB charging port. Gives out a really good light for a cheap headlight and has a round clip on the headband mount, which works really well and allows for changing and holding the angle.

Interesting to see inside, with a good battery it would be useable. Often reclaimed batteries are used in cheap products. The poor quality of the (probably PVC) plastic mouldings is what gives it such a junk appearance, and low durability.
@stanimir4197
@stanimir4197 2 жыл бұрын
(probably PVC) -> they say ABS+PC on the label at 00:25. I am surprised he didn't mentioned it. If* it's a composite it'd be an amazing quality body but I expect the body is ABS and the lens - PC. Most cheap stuff is ABS (not PVC).

@Michael Bishop It is on purpose. If the battery is discharged bellow the minimal level, it could be dangerous. You can drop it in water, or kill it in any way. They not want to risk fires from their products. Also profit. Bosch doing the same with their bicycle betteries.

I bought a cheap COB headlamp and I'm pretty happy with it. It has no zoom or lens but it puts light where I need it and keeps my hands free. I just use it for DIY stuff where I'm often working in poorly lit spaces. Headlamps are a game changer. Very useful when you can use one.

I walked by a fence that looked liked someont threw some orange LED lights on it, but as i got closer I couldnt see any lights yet the orange glow was still there, then I realized, it was the ends of the fence wire that was glowing, like fibre optic cables, just where it was cut. I immediately thought oh shit electricity! But I didnt beleive it at first so i had to touch it and oooh it was hot, instanly singed my skin and i didnt even touch the glowing part, thats when I thought ok its probably electrcity heating it. It was 5am dark I was getting my coffee around the corner I thought I'll call the elecric company at 7 or whatever when it get light out. But first i thought id take my multimeter down and see what kind of voltage tehre was. I was surprised to see it still glowing in the daytime as the sun came up, but I got not voltage reading,...i kept moving the probes around to different parts of the fence and finally got a sparking sound that made me jump back and i said forget it, no more probing. Id call the elecric company for sure now, this cant be safe theres a busy sidewalk along this fense, i cant let this go unreported and sleep at night, I'll get a snack at the dollar store first and call the electric company ... on my way back i see a city worker just about to pass the fence, great i'll just tell him, he'll know who to contact right away and he can see for himself, I run up and he's just approaching the spot that was glowing, the same spot that I was probing and got sparks(although i didnt see any just heard it) but now there wasnt any glowing... no sparking... Everything seemed back to normal. told him really quickly what happened as he was walking and he was like "oh yeah,.. theres lots of drug addicts here... probably an electric fense..." sort of just trying to brush it off like its nothing and kind of looking at me like im the drug addict, but im thinking wait.. noo, this isnt supposed to be an electric fence, this is dangerouse, its not glowing anymore but, I brought my multimeter! to test it, and as I being to take the probes out of my pocket I noticed he looked curiously but my meter was stuck and I could only bring them out and he's like thinking im a crazy drug addict for sure now and just keep going. Well im just glad the fence stoped being electric. Not sure what happened but theyve dont construction here a few times but it was across the street so i dunno. The building the fense belongs to a just recently closed down maybe they forgot to turn the electricty off or something.

If Liion cell is discharged lower than 2V its just garbage. Below this voltage, micro-short circuits are formed. Gases may be formed when such a cell is charged, which may result in an explosion due to the fact that cheap china cells do not have vent or any other protection.
