Dion (DiMucci) and the Belmonts were among the pioneers of early rock, coming out of NY as doo-wop singers. Dion was a huge influence on a couple of other notable New York musicians, both Paul Simon and Lou Reed (he's actually performed/recorded with both). He's still around, and he's still singing into his eighties! Check out his big '60's hit, Abraham, Martin and John for a completely different style of song which still resonates today.

If no one has mentioned it, Dion was the real life "Fonz". This is who Winkler was portraying. When not on TV, he was black jacket, blue jeans, cigarettes rolled up in his white t-shirt sleeve kinda guy on a Brooklyn street corner..
@TheLiam141414 жыл бұрын
Dion could easily make a concept album. starts with "Teenager in Love" then take it to "I Wonder Why" (there's lyrics that hint at her cheating) he finds out she's "Runaround Sue" and in his depression he finds that place for "Lovers who Wander" and becomes a swinger. then, he becomes the ultimate sleeze, "The Wanderer"
@Pb-ij4ip4 жыл бұрын
If he met “Sue” before this then he’s just lashing out, but if “the wanderer” met “Runaround Sue” then I guess he met his match AND got what was comin’ to him.

Back when my mother was 17, she won a brand new 1958 Chevy Bel Air from a radio station. She installed glasspacks and detailed it with footprint decals over the wheel wells with the words The Wanderer, the name of the car. My mom was badass! I know this apple didn't fall far from the tree, either! 😉 Love Dion's songs. And yes, my mother's car was named about 3 years before this song came out (1961), which was the year she married my father.

I believe Dion wrote this song when he was 13 years old. It was written for his neighbor who was in merchant marines, who had tattoos of all the girls he meet/or. Dion one of the great writers in his days.

He's still going. In my late teens and for a while after I was married, we'd go to a coffee house in Coral Gables, FL, (part of Miami) to see him live. We went so often, the owner would save a place for us right at the stage. Dion was having problems at the time, but I could have touched his shoes and loved listening to him. He is VERY special with the guitar. He's been known to have/suggest Martin Guitars and that is what he played then. Becoming a born again Christian changed his life and he moved to a different type of music. He lived in Boca Raton with (Runaround Sue), his wife, but they've moved back to NY and he's even playing some duets with Joe Bonamassa.

Rocknroll had a blend of numerous previous musical traditions, including country, rockabilly, boogie woogie, r&b, blues, and doo wop. Italian-American singers have a strong doo wop tradition, and they fell right into early rocknroll. Dion DiMucci was the biggest of them all. He was on the famous "Tour From Hell" when the plane crash killed Ritchie Valens, Buddy Holly, and the Big Bopper.

The song was written for his neighbor with all his girl tattoos 9n his body for reminders. As he was in the merchant marines. Dion wrote the song when he was 13 if I recall. As the song says, flo on my left, mary on my right, I tair open my shirt, rosie on my chest. As his neighbor traveled when he got the itch. He put into lyrics so it would connect to ordinary every day life. Dion one of the great writers from his youth to time. As well as a great singer with attitude.

Hey Jamel! Dion DiMucci, and his group The Belmonts, grew up right here in Da Bronx. They started out as a rock n roll group. But Dion split and went out on his own. By the mid-60's, he followed his heart and began to embrace the social change happening in America. His music aligned more with folk music, and he had more hits and a new audience. His career went quiet until the mid-80's, when Lou Reed asked him to back him up on his song, "Dirty Blvd". Btw, I didn't have to look any of that up. Dion is one of rock's minor Legends. Lou Reed knew it, too. And he was a legend himself. Check out Dion's songs "Ruby" and "Abraham, Martin and John" to see how he changed. So different, but both are brilliant. And also check out Lou Reed's "Dirty Blvd". A unique artist, well ahead of his time. ✌🏽out.

"Nobody puts baby in a corner" was the first thing I thought of when I saw the couple sitting at the table.

Thanks for the laugh; What a great reaction! It’s funny how a songs perspective can change with the mores of the times.

It's so much fun watching your reaction, I seldom even look at the video. Of course, I'm old, so I've usually seen it more than once.

He hugs them and he squeezes them; they don't even know his name, so it's more like: "I'm a prisoner. yeah a prisoner, I'm doin' time, time, time, time, time."

Always thought it was an interesting commentary that his two most famous songs are this, and "Run-around Sue"

"Seventeen" by Janis Ian - her voice is unbelievable and the lyrics hit an unforgettable emotional note.

You know how risky that was back then??!!! He was outspoken in this song for sure! Love you Jamal, enjoy your reactions so much. You make me smile! ❤️💜💚

Paige Mull Exactly. In 1961 a song about a guy openly admitting he likes to go from woman to woman and doesn’t want to settle down (kissing them and leaving them) and is essentially bragging about it took balls especially at that time period, but still a great song despite the subject matter.
