I was getting ready to head to our room and in walks Dionne Warwick with her bodyguards and she’s may be 5 foot away from me and as she just passes by, I sang walk on by she turns, gives me a smile and a wink …glad I didn’t get beat up. The sparse horn arrangement is a Bacharach signature. His writing partner, Hal David, wrote the lyrics. Dionne Warwick performed several Bacharach/David songs. This one was a hit and she is a treasure.
@mic1240Ай бұрын
More than several, they wrote songs specifically for Dioone. She had hit after hit with them, and is #2 most charted female of rock era (only behind Aretha Franklin) in large part due to the many songs they collaborated on together. Her ability to read music and play instruments helped her sing some often difficult songs.

Hearing Ms. Warwick's voice again brings a FLOOD of bittersweet memories...... I grew up in a household filled with music of all styles, genres from multiple eras. My parents radio station in the car was usually tuned to an easy listening station.... 1940s big bands, 1950s and 1960s 'crooners', and contemporary easy listening. Such a sweet time.... my siblings and I were surrounded by grandparents, mom, dad and many uncles and aunts... all of them gone now.

So glad to see you listening to Dionne Warwick! Her catalogue was huge in my life as a teenager. As for your Singer/ Songwriter project, I have a couple of suggestions. React to "Late For the Sky" by Jackson Browne. He's one of, if not the best, S/S from the 70s-80s. His "Late for the Shy" album is a masterpiece, and the title track is a stunner.

"I've heard this before..." Yes, I suspect EVERY female vocalist HAD to record this at some point in her career. Burt Bacharach and Hal David... Burt used to sing this occasionally during his small-band shows. This version by Dionne might be correctly considered The Standard for all others - she has that trumpet-like tone in her voice, kind of 'popping-like'.

During the '80s and '90s, Dionne started an infomercial campaign on late-night TV, advertising her 'seance by phone fortune tellers.' These are made fun for about 10 years or so, and faded away sooner than the jokes did.

@@calme-dx2dp Yes. Dionne's mother, Lee (Delia) was the oldest sister and when their parents died, Cissy (Emily) being the youngest wasn't quite old enough to be on her own so she lived with Lee's family including Dionne and her sister Dee Dee, and Cissy being only 8 years older than Dionne, they were always very close. Cissy was a talented singer in her own right and when you listen to Cissy's recordings you can see her influence on both her niece Dionne and her own daughter Whitney. Cissy just passed last month and Dionne said their family had lost their matriarch.
