The goal of this application is to familiarize our students with the principles of the IEEE Std. 1149.1, commonly adopted in industry terminology as Boundary Scan Testing (BST).
A Boundary Scan Test is implemented for a test board containing 3 controllers and peripherals. The main focus is the simulation and auto-testing of the communication between two individual control units.
The XJLink2 (from XJTAG, www.xjtag.com/about-jtag/) controller performs the main BST procedures defined via XJDeveloper. The Digilent Analog Discovery 2 (AD2, from Digilent) is used for accurate frequency and voltage measurements and for interactive connector validation.
What have we learned/gained:
- What is the purpose of BST, the advantages and challenges when compared against other industrial test technologies;
- The design guidelines and requirements for IEEE 1149.1 enabled electronic boards;
- The ability to design, build and verify a simple electronic board, using dedicated industrial tools;
- The ability to implement a functional BST project and present initial coverage analysis data;
- The ability to extend test coverage on their board by using additional measurement tools, in compliance with diploma requirements.
