This is great Chris. Great breakdown and delivery.

Over on Spark, David Maletksy observed "To my mind, gunboat is for practicing mechanics, and as has been mentioned, helps with time management. I think a distinction needs to be drawn between “mechanics” and terms like “tactics” and “strategy”, though; tactics is mostly psychology after a point, and strategy is a combination of predictive capacity and apprehension of the butterfly effect on a given board" - I think that's actually pretty much spot on. If you don't have a mastery of the mechanics of the game, you trip over your feet when trying to "execute the plan."

Very elegant analysis. I cannot disagree with you. IMO, this video is more about smart strategy than tactics, and how to marry them.

My set or orders were: Gre - Bul; Bul - Rum; Bud s Bul - Rum; Vie - Gal; Tri - Ser. Disaster time, Mr Martin. ;) Realyl good video as always :)

There is always a chance that you're Austria - but _most_ of the time you wont be! :D

Probably best for all concerned.

I really liked this analysis. The most important part you mentioned is knowing the history of the game. Because in gunboat there are also relations. Saying that I`m not convinced that Italy will attack Austria. He could also go for Smy next year and maybe set up an attack on Mun with Tyr-Boh + Ven-Boh. The reason for that is that I believe Italy does not strengthen his position when he gets Tri: 1. Turkey survives with a fleet in the Med which binds Italian fleets 2.Russia usually wins a 1-1 war versus Italy in the Austrian territory and on the Balkans So I assume a lot of Italian players would attack Tri just to get the dot but the value of this dot is very questionable. So I would rather stick with Austria. That means for Austria that an Russian attack is more likely than an Italian attack and I would probably move Tri-Ser. (Knowing that most average and lower players are just looking for the dots and probably both (Bud and Tri are under attack). So maybe I would gamble then with Vie s Bud-Tri and Bul-Rum expecting that Turkey would not leave Smy open (which very few Turkish players would do) All this leads to what I said at the beginning. To find the right set of orders you must know the history of the game and the information you need out of that are a) the relations between the countries, b)the playing strength of the players and c) if they are rather greedy or stick to alliances

Great video! I noticed that if Austria knows what Russia and Italy are going to do in this example, they can have Vie S Bud-Tri, Bud-Tri, Tri-Ser, Bul-Rum, and Gre-Bul. Thus, the move Bud-Tri bounces with the Italian units and also bounces out Gal-Bud whose support was cut by Bulgaria. This gets Austria a build in Trieste even with both Russia and Italy attacking him. It doesn't change the analysis much but interesting to note.

Excellent catch! Without being able to negotiate, Austria is definitely in a tough spot here.

Such a great video ! I am an advanced player , and I want to say that playing chess is very useful for tactics in Diplomacy ! I started playing Diplomacy when I had 2100 Elo , and found out that finding the best plan in this game is easier for people who trained chess a lot !

Just wanted to mention that sometimes you have a plan but it simply isn't working out. E.g. some potential allies have other plans or simply do not want to follow your plan; even if you are the most persuasive player of all times. Therefore, you often have to remain flexible. This is why I think your proposed procedure is kind of incomplete although the procedure is right in itself.

"Everyone has a plan until they get punched in the face." Yeah, you're right - there is definitely more to this than I covered.
