Some spoiler-free things: 1. The multi-bear is voiced by Alfred Molina 2. A full version of disco girl was eventually released, Dipper singing to it and everything. 3. No, we never find out what's in the pain hole. 4. You ever notice, the Manataurs like jerky? BEEF jerky? They're half cow. Do with that what you will.

Honestly, considering that it's 10 years old, I think this episode has aged better than one would expect. It really is just a simple but great takedown of toxic masculinity, and I personally find the manotaurs to be hilarious.
@20000dino
@20000dino Жыл бұрын
I agree ! My one more substantial gripe with it is that, at the end, Dipper still wins through being "manly" in the eyes of someone else - Grunkle Stan. He defines standing up for your beliefs as a "manly" trait - when, really, it's just a positive quality to have regardless of your gender identity. The episode still ends up upkeeping the concept of "masculinity" itself instead of denouncing how utterly pointless it is and, thus, dismantling it. Positive or toxic, "masculinity" is still a mere socialization model, a construct which often restricts personal expression and growth.

@Stratilex
@Stratilex Жыл бұрын
Disagreed. While standing for what you believe is a positive trait, I think it should also be attributed to manhood as the maturity and responsibility to take care of others and putting their interests above your own. Toxic masculinity would maybe be defining manliness in virtueless behavior and putting ultimately insignificant traits on a pedestal, while real men that lay down their lives for others and lead by example as role models are absolutely necessary. Now this is not me saying men are good and women are bad (which would be false, and I also view men to be worse in general just because I am one I guess), each have their own natural goals to reach for self improvement, and I think the idea of abolishing gender is dangerous not because of tradition, but because on a neurological level men and women are wired differently and thus should be allowed to healthily fit into the mold of who they are. I find it hard to speak for women since I'm a guy, but they equally shoulder responsibility with men, just in a different way. Also, I'm not saying all men need to be the same and all women need to be the same, there is absolutely the aspect of personality and upbringing to factor into things. But gender identity conflict roots down to modern society only caring about what brings them pleasure, which has of course manifested in every era in a different way. Additionally, the "boys will be boys" saying that perhaps this episode was based on should only be used for the innocent, inconsequential, and silly activities that some men like to partake in. It should by no means be a justification for sexual harassment, misogyny, demeaning comments or actions, etc. If there was a saying like "girls will be girls" (which there might be I just haven't heard it) I imagine it could be used to highlight how girls generally pay more attention to detail and creatively solving problems beyond functionality.@@20000dino

Fun fact time for Kenny & Montana! There's a full-length version of the BABBA song "Disco Girl" on KZbin sung by Dipper's VA. Its parody take on the 70's Swedish band ABBA and their song "Dancing Queen" is just as ridiculous as you'd expect. The song is only made better with Dipper's pre-pubescent bathroom singing. Its not hard to envision the awkward, improvised dance moves he's pulling of during his solo rendition in a bath towel.

The fact that this show managed to get so many celebrity cameos is pretty incredible. Alfred Molina as Multibear completely flew over my head, but I had to check to see if Lazy Susan really is Jennifer Coolidge not just because it was so unbelievable that she would cameo in this, but also because she sounded so much like herself but also... not? But every cameo so far has been really fun and they all had a lot of effort put into them.

I agree with what Montana said, the "be there for others, help them, you can put yourself second, everything else is selfish" is a big thing, when you grow up as a girl. I mean, the most popular dream being implemented on little girls is "be a wife, be a mother, that's it", it's getting better but still. Both of these titles are closely linked to being the caregiver and the fewest know, taking care from others or of yourself is also okay. It's also true, that the one thing that comes to mind while praising mothers and grandmothers is the sacrifice. I don't know if my mom always did this, but even though she has five kids, she has her own hobbies, a job, that she loves and friends. Though I doubt that this was always the case, I'm happy for her. She is almost done with raising her five kids, which she did an amazing job with, she more than deserves it.
@Stratilex

but what are men praised for? In my life I've only seen men and women respected in the same way: for being loving, sacrificial, among other things. Obviously men and women will generally excel in different areas, but I don't think there's a larger pressure on one or the other in general society.

Casual trauma dumping ahead, you’ve been warned This episode hits close to home for me. I grew up in an environment, where boys my age were mostly interested in things like sports, shooting games, among other things. You know, the general ‘boy stuff’. I didn’t have much in common with them but I was desperate to fit in, so I tried to ‘toughen up’ and act like them. Because of that I lost a lot of my emotional intelligence and it made accepting my sexuality harder. Seeing Dipper’s struggles in this episode brings back a lot of unpleasant memories. On the other hand, showing that you don’t have to fit the stereotypical image of a man, and tackling the problem of toxic masculinity in general is great and much needed.

Oof... As a man who has always looked up to his mother I've struggled with both the societal expectations of bottling up my emotions either to 'not show weakness' or 'not burden others with my crap' as well as the internal pressure of always trying to put other people first and making sure those around me are taken care of before I focus on myself. It's taken both friends and partners practically forcing me to be "selfish" (really just take care of myself) to help me start to break down those habits in a healthy way. "Can't fill from an empty cup" would make a great mantra, lol.

I finally looked into "Gravity Falls" on Disney XD in mid-May 2023. I "got on the bus to Piedmont" in late July, then noticed that a few episodes hadn't been broadcast. They were: "Dipper vs. Manliness," "Summerween," and "The Little Gift Shop of Horrors." Eventually, "Manliness" and "Gift Shop" were broadcast Once, but not "Summerween." The "Disco Girl" song is a feature of this "what is a man?" episode. To FUBAR metaphors, faced with a dilemma, Dipper "couldn't do something smart, so he did something right." The August 31, 2023 war between Disney and the Spectrum cable TV system ended with the loss of EIGHT Disney-owned channels, including Disney XD, for Disney Plus. So, "Gravity Falls" is completely gone. I solved that with physical media in the form of the 7 disc "Gravity Falls Collector's Edition."

Yeah, the dipper plot is just fine in my opinion. I think it’s the plot with Mabel and Stan is what brings it down. That plot point leads no where, no growth, no relevance anywhere other than this episode (other than kinda introducing lazy Susan, but I think she was already introduced and she isn’t the most deep character.) take that in comparison to the multibear and the man-o-taurs, show up later down the road (mostly in a few select episodes but it’s at least there). Also this show just has so many amazing episodes that any mediocre episode automatically gets ranked at the bottom, even if they’re still good.

Apparently Dipper vs. Manliness is series creator Alex Hirsch's least favorite episode. In the episode's commentary track, he says the episode isn't bad but it doesn't capture the spirit of the show. It's quite interesting to hear how critical he is of all the early episodes saying that it wasn't until Double Dipper, next week's reaction, where he felt that he finally cracked how to make the show work. Personally, I think this episode is still enjoyable. Yeah it's not my favorite but Alfred Molina singing Disco Girl is an absolute win.

I personally hate the concept of things being "manly" because even if it's a positive thing, it's still needlessly gendering a personality trait. Like as a woman, how am i supposed to feel when I'm told bravery, protecting your loved ones, being a leader, etc, is "manly"?? I think these should just be seen as traits men or women can have and shouldnt be specifically gendered.
@Stratilex
@Stratilex Жыл бұрын
I think it's moreso that manliness should be characterized by those traits, not necessarily that only men can be brave or only men can protect others. But I feel like men are probably more suited for some of those roles, and in other areas would be lesser compared to women. Well let me single out bravery, as a guy I've always been kinda timid or not really a daredevil in anyway, but I've seen plenty girls with more "bravery" than me in a sense, so it's actually good imo to be challenged to grow past who I've always been, while recognizing that me being a man doesn't automatically give me all these positive traits I'd like to have.
