Dipping ewes - Flys be GONE!!

After weaning getting all of the ewes through the dip to prevent flystrike.

It has been but it's turned a lot milder lately, snow has gone off the mountains. I was working over on Mull last week where your family are from, any idea which part ? Hi Alistar & Genna. I've been following the channel for some time, love the family working together. Came over from South Africa to visit the kids. Got a job offer, so it seems I will be an islander too. Love the scenery in your area. It is on my bucket list to visit the south island soon. Farmer kids is brilliant idea. You could consider one or two farm visits a year to give city kids hands on farm experience.

We just run them through once a summer. by the time 12 weeks is up it will start cooling off and the risk will be minimal.

Gee that is easy putting the sheep through that dip. Far easier than what we had when you were a kid Alistair, and less back breaking than throwing them all in the Pot Dip out of the woolshed in the 1970's and 80's

That magic eye dip looks to be less hassle than the mechanical race we have. Not a lot of people would appreciate the subtlety that goes into building measurements to the approach of the dip. (the right setup saves an extra person. ah?)

More videos by Genna on different topics, in a separate playlist, would be good, I think. She and the girls are certainly part of the farm. The stuff about the two teeth was interesting. I'm not a farmer, and my dad grew up on a dairy farm, so other than a visit to the cousins' sheep operation in Oregon when I was 13, I've no idea about sheep or raising them. I'd love to see more videos.

19:35 Good video Alastair - Again! In the UK we nearly exclusively use plunge dipping. Jetting hasn’t really been accepted because farmers, and probably the authorities, don’t trust it to provide full protection. Am I right in thinking it’s ok for flies and lice but not for scab or ectoparasite control? Any thoughts on persuading customers of the benefit of a jetting service? Re the kids videos, anything we can do to encourage kids into the industry and/or better understand where their food comes from has to be positive. Keep up the good work mate 👍 Regards Joe

Thanks Joe. It works well for flys and lice, dont know about anything else. For us we dont have any other dipping method and find the jetting better than a pour on.

As a Welshman living in the south West of WA I'm loving your vids, kids vids would be great but can do a walk through of your sheep yards? We've bought an 80acre property (small to you but you got to start somewhere) we manage 200 wiltipol plus a handful of Angus heifers and 2500 olive trees so yards would be good as we are setting up our own flock, 👍👍

the educational part is not just for the kids it is for adults that didn't grow up on a farm and really have not idea about farming they just purchase their meat in the supermarket or butcher - many don't even understand how to cook different cuts of meat - unless it has a pre packet flavour brought from the supermarket

So what have gathered from 2 videos is that you have weaned the lambs and sold them , conditioned the ewes to put back on pasture. Some numbers of animals you have both sheep and cattle would be appreciated. Yes include your children because they are the next generation of farmers. Never to young to learn. Thanks.

Thanks, our numbers are 110 beef cows with calves and about 1500 ewes plus we have an extra 350 lambs still on and about 30 more cattle.
