I've seen every single Dir en Grey show in So Cal and this had to be their most challenging string of shows. They definitely had a lot to prove and because of that I felt their energy was at some of its highest. The shows definitely played out like this video - completely unresponsive crowd, a sense of racial tension in the air with people wondering who this random Japanese band was on stage. But I think this was extremely important to their career as a whole and they still put themselves on the line like always. Many people waited for the meet & greet and some sat through the festival just for them. This was a really important time for Japanese music in general and I think what they did was quite unprecedented and courageous, as only a band like Dir en Grey could accomplish.

Late reply but at their San Bernadino show there was a huge mosh pit at the lawn section during their set esp. during IIIrd empire. They were well received at least in the socal leg of this tour at least. I was at the pit during the show and it was pretty dead like this. Most of the fun looks like it might be away from the pit and seated sections during concerts like this where the main headliners don't take the stage till many hours later.

No wonder Dir en grey doesn't come to America. They don't gain anything. The crowds suck. Everyone is literally a zombie. Imagine dreaming of making it big worldwide and spending a fortune traveling to a foreign country and giving your best performance to see everyone standing, emotionless. And most "fans" don't even support the music through purchases. Everyone's downloading albums for free. Not like there's an excuse against buying their stuff too, because we have sites like eBay and discogs where you can find stuff for reasonable prices. When I go to Japan, I want to attend one of their live shows. I can't believe this band is still going, after decades without changing any member. When's the last time you saw a metal band with all the OG members? That's fucking amazing. It just shows how high quality they are. I really love this band so much

They played a tour here last year. I also saw them in LA in 2015, was lucky to get tickets, they sold out in an hour. Set was incredible, Kyo is a fucking God among men. They also played Seattle, Vancouver, and New York, so they come to America, just on special occasions.
@kitsunegiblaze80222 жыл бұрын
This was totally not the case in 2007, when they played at Roseland Theatre in Portland OR. .... or 2008 at the Hawthorne Theatre, or 2010 with Apocalyptica at Roseland again.... The crowd may not have been massive, since these were smaller venues, but all of us still went nuts. Imagine waiting to see a band you've been into since 2003, that you never thought would tour in your city.
@kitsunegiblaze80222 жыл бұрын
"Most fans don't support the band through actual legal purchases of the albums." -- That's funny, cuz I very much remember buying WtD, MoAB, Uroboros, etc when they were available to purchase in local stores like Hot Topic or F.y.e. -- at a reasonable U.S. price. You can't expect fans to pay $40+ for an Audio CD from CD Japan or Yes Asia ~every single time~ .... But a $16 CD in a local store? Yes. That's a reasonable price. Sadly, elitism ruined the J-Rock fandom just like it is going to ruin K-Pop. Just watch. They'll all be arguing and fighting with each other lol....

@MyThiNg94 He's self mutilated for nearly a decade while performing. He did it before he was famous and he doesn't do it nearly as much now because audiences abroad don't perceive it as intended. It's become part of his definitive stage presence. It's his artistic self expression of the music and lyrics. Self harm, death, suicide, and severe depression, as well as other less than happy subjects, have always been major themes of Dir en grey's music. He's simply manifesting it in a live forum.

I paid for a full price ticket for this one band on this entire tour. As soon as they were done, I LEFT. And after the show, I was privileged and honored to shake Kyo's hand. Meeting him, with my slight nervous bow and mumbled "Domo arigatou gozaimashita, Kyo-sama," was honestly probably one of the best moments of my life. Thanking that man for saving me, for bearing his soul, even though hardly anyone there appreciated and understood anything about them, was a dream come true.

I'm from America and I will say this much.. Its weird for most to hear a band in a complete different language (most people want to be able to understand the music) Dir en Grey aren't as known here as in other places but they are getting more attention here. His reasons for fish-hooking himself & ripping his fingers open is that it's just Kyo. It's what he does. He likes to see people's reactions. God back in 2006 I just turned 13 and I remember hearing about Dir en grey on a site called Bebo not too long after MySpace began to fall. Hearing Merciless cult and the withering to death album that had come out the year prior to their American touring. I remember buying the CD and DVD for this just for Dir en grey because it was the first ever time they had toured America. Not too long after, in 2007 they toured with the deftones and fall of Troy and I saw them in Portland Oregon. My first ever rock concert. It's so weird to see this now and know how far they have come. The earlier years of their US touring was crazy and I can say that they definitely carved out the path for future Japanese bands to come over here without the struggle and racial tension that Dir en grey may had faced back in the early 2000's. I would love to relive these moments again, Dir en grey does not tour as much anymore and things have change.. but I still enjoy these moments and what they are now. It's funny to because they were the first band to really become popular in other countries because of KZbin and such.. at least in the US

@MyThiNg94 I still think Kyo used to sneak fake blood capsules into his mouth. He used to do this every night during this same song, there's no way someone could rip their mouth open like that on a regular basis and perform. His mouth would never heal and he would risk infection. Now the chest scratching was definitely real, but the mouth stuff? No.

I think Kyo misses dead american crowds. He uses them in sukekiyo lives ^^'' I wonder about language barrier. I never thought about it. I don't understand most english music and most bands sing in English even if not from America or England. So I have to read on lyrics. It is no difference between english or japanese. But since being on KZbin I find most English speaking person are offended or not interested if bands don't sing their language. That is very strange to me.
