I just remembered Dir en Grey again and came to this video. They were my absolute favourite band in my teens starting around 12 or 13. Tbh I didnt have a great childhood and there was trauma. Something I always loved about DEG is the emotion. Never have I heard music that feels so deep. Whatever lyrics of any song, nothing ever compared to the emotional rollercoaster of DEG songs. Pain surely plays a role in that. I think when you hit rock bottom and lose yourself somewhere between emptiness and despair, this music hits different and can represent it. Not all songs, but many. Some sound more like hope and power, raising from the ashes. I am aware that might sound edgy, but thats what DEG is for me. Music that feels just like my soul does in dark times, but also touches it in a healing empowering way. I feel like Kyo is kinda lost to the void. A crazy man as well as a legend. The amount of passion and emotion has to come from somewhere and expressing them that deeply surely has some impact. However the art he brings to stage is something many wouldnt understand. Maybe because they cant feel it, maybe because they dont really listen or they never heard of them. That makes Dir En Grey a band that will always be underappreciated but those who do will know the greatness. Kyo is an artist I cant compare to anyone. Never have I seen someone so passionate.

I feel the same . You may like the Russian band Shortparis , they're also very aesthetic, dramatic , chaotic, crazy lives and the vocalist uses "the opera voice" technique. They're not that deeply painful though and maybe the Russian language may be a frontier since it's more difficult to find translation.

Kyo absolutely has to be one of the most underappreciated front men of all time. Not only from a technical perspective, but he always injects such an incredible amount of pain and emotion into his performances in a way that I've only ever seen a handful of front men project. Edit: Some people seem to have taken objection to my use of the term underappreciated. I stand by it. Is Kyo rightfully respected within the world of Japanese metal and progressive music? Yeah, absolutely. Is he a name your average western metal fan would recognise as they would a name like Mike Patton for instance? Absolutely not. This is what I mean by him being underappreciated.

I have been an avid DIRU fan here and there since about 12..I’m 30 now and reconnecting to my indigenous roots. I feel part of DIRU that attracted me to them is that their singing is very similar to the way some tribes use tone, vocal range, melody and emotion to convey a song. The singer is very much a spirit singer: he embodies the range of the men /women and children lost during that massacre, while he’s actively walking an audience through this cathartic healing angry and sad experience to the other side. Together, they heal in this song. I couldn’t help but also feel pain for my ancestors, an uneasyness for our future, and the sadness of man-made violence. Truly hits different.

I don't think you're wrong, but I think there's more to it than that, it seems to me that, at least judging by the archival footage they used in the background during the performance as well as in the music video, that they're trying to convey the cyclical nature of violence, at least in the context of WW2. They show footage not only of the atrocities committed against Japan by the Americans, but also of the atrocities committed by Japan during the war (I'm drunk so I could be wrong but I believe there's footage of the Rape of Nanking as well as a newspaper showing a Japanese soldier publicly beheading an allied POW, among a ton of other stuff I can't quite place atm). I want to say that the music video wouldn't have been banned in Japan if they were simply denouncing the nuclear bombings of Japan, that's a fairly common sentiment over there. The message I get, at least from the visuals they've accompanied with the music, is that atrocities leveled against other human beings in response to other atrocities, are still just that, atrocities, and they should be admonished all the same. I could be wrong though, I'm just going off what I know about Japanese history and what the music video seems to be trying to say, I don't speak the language either. If I'm right though, the sheer magnitude of the balls it takes to perform a song acknowledging the wrongdoings of the country they live in, that to this day denies having utterly eviscerated the peoples whose countries they invaded, while also acknowledging that the actions taken against their civilian populace by the Allies was equally disgusting, all while wearing a damn dress in a country that really, really doesn't like it when men do that, is just absolutely insane to me. Damn that got rambly, sorry I'm drunk as hell. You're right though, this is what art is supposed to do.

When I woke up the next day, I pretty quickly thought back to that post and kind of felt like an idiot for not just looking up the English lyrics before posting that, but honestly I'm kind of glad I tried to interpret it based mostly off the music video and this performance, because it's given me a huge respect for how well they're able to convey their message despite the language barrier between them and a good chunk of their audience. I read the actual lyrics just now (and god damn are they incredible) and I was surprised it didn't really change my interpretation much at all, just gave me more details to consider for the most part. I'm so glad I decided to revisit these guys, I hadn't listened to any of their work since Withering to Death and man, they have really honed their craft. Also, check SUKEKIYO, it's a side band project by Kyo (lead singer here, surely you know that) and, god do they create good stuff as well (check ADORATIO first even if everything's good) Also there's DECAY and SERAPH (respectively Die and Shinya's side band) Decay is great, if you like rock and roll, and SERAPH promised a bit too much compared to what they delivered. Vinushka Lyrics kyo I exchange thoughts with the clouds. I hold my breath. Ahh, it's just hard shell you can't see Is that where the bottom is? The shadow burns me. Ahh, I just want to keep forgetting Slip your desires into the ants' nest. Come now, all you have to do now is be reborn again Let tomorrow sleep and peacefulness will turn to you Free yourself and go with your razor sharp emotions Even the twisted flow is the proof that you're alive I invite the tearfully-indulging sorrow The inculated Dogra Magra The pain of the mark and the one and only personality And those colorful eyes all decorated I don't want them anymore Is hypocrisy going to come and take it all away? The lonely red stage at night I dedicate the following to the aspiring leading actor That's where the truth is The small corner of my un-cheatable heart says "I still want to be here" Who can't we forgive? I let them hear my cold voice and I swear I will live with my work I scream with this body of flesh that separates heaven and hell I carve the sins What will be the proof of my existence if it disappears with the wind? "I've stared at the strong shining moon long enough to be bored Can't even turn myself into a werewolf, but just enough to become crazy by the darkness I do not want to sleep because I want to eat the neck. At the age where you just want attention... tonight, I might go crazy for you" Everyone wants to reach out their hand and grab happiness but they just end up becoming the monster that lies deep in darkness The end has already come to life It will take form at zero and will crawl back into the uterus and rot Every time this happens, your faces crumble No one wants to talk about the truth that hurts the ear The suppressed minds Compensate the sins and let life be gone The emptiness of the antithesis becomes the choking and crying land Bury the bones in the common land immersed in thesis. Be burdened by depression. The gritty tsunami takes me away and I smile with bitter tears Couldn't understand the value of things The hanging of the necks at the 13 stairs Seeing people becoming friendly while clapping hands That mixes in with sissy thoughts and hurts others Seeing you like this, it's just too sad Splash of blood, Squashing basic instincts Talk about death I will live with my work I scream with this body of flesh that separates heaven and hell I carve the sins What will be the proof of my existence if it disappears with the wind? No one wants to talk about the truth that hurts the ear The suppressed minds Compensate the sins and let life be gone Because I am evil Is it a sin for me to live?
