if this song is called boring by anyone, then that person just doesn't understand what a modern-day classic this song is, from the very first note the last, it is simply sublime, and showcases how less can sometimes be more, Mark Knopfler makes a guitar literally sing like no other can, it's close to 40 years old now and it still moves me everytime I hear it, thanks for your reaction vid Rebeka

Knopfler's perspective is: The song is King. Lyrics, melody, instrument choice, arrangement, solo, and vocal delivery are all part of that policy. Mark always delivers for those who love music
@robk5159 Жыл бұрын
It was my understanding (having read several of Mark's interviews) that he wrote this not only for the British troops killed in the Falkland Islands war in 1982 but also the futility of war anywhere. However it must also be said that Britain was given no option but to fight as Argentina attacked against the wishes of the Islanders.
@AnneDowson-vp8lg Жыл бұрын
I'm glad you mentioned the Islanders. Their experience tends to get lost amongst all the destruction. They had been living there for 200 years. I remember the Falklands conflict. The son of one of my work colleagues was a Chief Petty Officer on board the British ship The Antelope when it was hit by an Exocet missile. A man waiting outside his office door to speak to him, was killed, but Robert was not in his office, and escaped. The person who said we must find a better way of resolving national disputes is right. But we can't even seem to resolve conflict locally or personally. But we must hold onto hope. Praying if you believe, helps with that, and so does good music, like this song. God bless Mark Knopfler.

There is the case of a British soldier during the Falklands war against the Argentinians in 1982, which this song is about, and the soldier approached a dying Argentinian soldier and he was shocked and surprised when the soldier said to him in perfect English: "I was never your enemy" and died. That British soldier left the Army and never fought again, he just couldn't do it any more when even his enemy was a human being like him.

This is one of those songs... If I know it's coming I can deal with it, but if it starts playing out of the blue... 😭 It was played twice- the original and an instrumental version- on my brothers funeral 10 years ago. Last year I was listening to the "yearly playlist" on spotify while working. I hadn't checked out the songs, just played it. And this one came on, and I started crying my eyes out, with no way of getting away from my work station. A really gem of a song from their library of artworks.

I get a lump in my throat every time I hear this masterpiece, absolutely incredible how powerful and real the emotions and lyrics are when listening to this. I'm an American who was in the US Navy and know it was written for the Brits in the Falklands war but it applies to me and many who no longer are here on my ship and every other service member knows exactly what I'm saying who experienced a loss of a buddy.

I barely remember back in the sixties when the audience was silent because they were actually listening to the music. We sat quietly in order to become more absorbed in the music and allow the musicians to create more subtle passages that could not be heard if everyone was screaming like banshees. this song especially deserves some silence

And i saw many many others...But Dire Straits in one and only. Btw, in my humble opinion, the greatest version of this masterpiece is from "On the night" concert, Live in London. What a keyboard parts of Alan Clark.......My God...Tide of melancholy and beauty...Makes me melting and cry every time. Decepcionante Brothes in arms. Gracias por tu reacción.
