Yeah, Tre- perfection is about right... Mark really knows how to craft a tune, and perform with such elegance, precision and heart, surrounding himself with superb musicians and sound techs. Yup- perfection. Peace.

Mark Knopfler is a very modest guitar player. What I mean by that, is he doesn't seem to feel the need to showboat his incredible talent. He is a top-tier player, with an iconic sound and unforgettable licks, yet doesn't seem to crave the attention that some guitarist seem to. His vocals have gotten better in time. Usually it's the opposite. That shows a maturity as a musician.

A fictional character (lady)...but whats important here is that there is a bar called saturn on the corner of Toulouse & Dauphin...Knopfler's lyrical supremacy and his love for the US has been exceptional, and this song is no different. I feel, this song is about a dream that Knopfler saw...a dream that he just couldnt let go off...a dream where he was in his favorite place (New Orleans), a mystical woman (Marie Ondine) and with the weather playing truant (rains/smokey)...I mean, its a perfect dream sequence...Hail Knopfler

Its name is a reference to the story of Ondine and Hans, characters in Ondine, a 1938 play by Jean Giraudoux based on traditions tracing back through Undine (a novella of 1811) to earlier European folk tales. The water-sprite Ondine tells her future husband Hans, whom she had just met, that "I shall be the shoes of your feet ... I shall be the breath of your lungs". Ondine makes a pact with her uncle the King of the Ondines that if Hans ever deceives her he will die. After their honeymoon, Hans is reunited with his first love Princess Bertha and Ondine leaves Hans only to be captured by a fisherman six months later. On meeting Ondine again on the day of his wedding to Bertha, Hans tells her that "all the things my body once did by itself, it does now only by special order ... A single moment of inattention and I forget to breathe". Hans and Ondine kiss, after which he dies. Ondine’s Curse is a rare neurologic condition that causes the automatic drive to breathe to stop. In the song, Marie Ondine is an irresistible woman, who a relationship with may result in dangerous consequences.

This definitely conjures the steam and the smell, and the heat even at night. What a perfect soundtrack to any movie involving the place. I already need another shower and I just took one. God, stay out of New Orleans if you can. If you can't, plan to never leave.
