I'm 50 now. I've been hearing this song since I was a little kid. I didn't realize for so many years that this song is a masterpiece. The guitar work is amazing and flawless. The vocal sound from Mark fits perfectly with the mood the instruments create. Having a band that tight behind the lead guitar work of Mark, makes it perfection. There's no repetitions in the song. It's a complete story from the start to the end.

What about the sound guys the roadies the people who built the amps the engineers the luthiers the miners who got the metal the lumberjacks, Pythagoreas, and what about the cavemen who first played their bow as a harp why don't those people ever get credit either. That's what I'm wondering.

Lyrics: You get a shiver in the dark It's a raining in the park but meantime- South of the river you stop and you hold everything A band is blowing Dixie, double four time You feel alright when you hear the music ring Well now you step inside but you don't see too many faces Coming in out of the rain they hear the jazz go down Competition in other places Uh but the horns they blowin' that sound Way on down south Way on down south London town You check out guitar George, he knows-all the chords Mind, it's strictly rhythm he doesn't want to make it cry or sing They said an old guitar is all, he can afford When he gets up under the lights to play his thing And Harry doesn't mind, if he doesn't, make the scene He's got a daytime job, he's doing alright He can play the Honky Tonk like anything Savin' it up, for Friday night With the Sultans We're the Sultans of Swing And then the man he steps right up to the microphone And says at last just as the time bell rings "Goodnight, now it's time to go home" Then he makes it fast with one more thing "We are the Sultans We are the Sultans of Swing"

I went into a record store looking for something country-type, the manager told me that they didn't have anything like that, while I was looking for something that caught my attention, They played Sultans of Swing by Dire Straits, immediately upon hearing it I said to myself, “I want it”, I love it, from that day to date I have followed and bought everything that Mark Knopfler has done, his way of playing the guitar fascinates me, his style is immediately recognizable, it is unique.

How the hell did he write this song? Pure genius. Everything about this song is just perfect - vocal, lyrics, composition, recording, guitar & bass, drums, chord progression and even the title of the song "Sultans of Swing".

@Yeshuah757 He couldn't believe the audacity of the jazz band.. They were playing in a dive bar to an audience of 4 people.. I believe his exact words were something like "nobody playing in that band that night was a Sultan of anything let alone swing.." So the greatest rock and roll song ever written is basically making fun of a crappie dive bar jazz band with an ego complex..

To anyone who is remembering their dad listening to this tune......much love!! Here’s to awesome dads!! Earliest childhood memories include hearing this song. Am a grown man these days but miss my father every day - we played this song at his funeral. I take so much comfort in reading comments & remembering good times & knowing there’s others out there who have the same feelings for this song & for their father. Peace out & love to all. 🙏

You get a shiver in the dark It's a raining in the park but meantime- South of the river you stop and you hold everything A band is blowing Dixie, double four time You feel alright when you hear the music ring Well now you step inside but you don't see too many faces Coming in out of the rain they hear the jazz go down Competition in other places Uh but the horns they blowin' that sound Way on down south Way on down south London town You check out guitar George, he knows-all the chords Mind, it's strictly rhythm he doesn't want to make it cry or sing They said an old guitar is all, he can afford When he gets up under the lights to play his thing And Harry doesn't mind, if he doesn't, make the scene He's got a daytime job, he's doing alright He can play the Honky Tonk like anything Savin' it up, for Friday night With the Sultans We're the Sultans of Swing Then a crowd a young boys they're a foolin' around in the corner Drunk and dressed in their best brown baggies and their platform soles They don't give a damn about any trumpet playin' band It ain't what they call Rock and Roll And the Sultans Yeah, the Sultans, they play Creole Creole And then the man he steps right up to the microphone And says at last just as the time bell rings "Goodnight, now it's time to go home" Then he makes it fast with one more thing "We are the Sultans We are the Sultans of Swing"

Technically that “Nashville” style of voicing chords and coloring solos was manifested by none other than the master, Chet Atkins. Mark’s guitar hero. I'm 83 and back in the 60's we used to go to the Blue moon Hotel in Muizenberg, Cape Town, South Africa every Friday night and they had live bands playing the latest rock songs..............by 12 midnight we would be so high with the music (no drugs etc then) we'd head into Cape Town to an all night night club and twist the night till dawn......I'm gonna live forever.......
