I think Mark Knopfler is the best guitarist ever. Mark can tell stories with his guitar, can make people cry with his guitar playing. Mark ranks among the greatest composers of all time, along with Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, Freddy Mercury and David Gilmour.

I was lucky enough to see Dire Straits on two different tours in the 80s, and I’ve seen Mark Knopfler solo four times with his solo band since 2005. Even though we’ll never see a Dire Straits reunion, Mark has a great band and is a must see live if you get the chance. He doesn’t sound like anyone who came before him, and nobody sounds like him. His touch on the guitar is instantly recognizable, even when playing as a guest on other artists songs. The Dire Straits catalog is worth exploring, but so is his solo work. His lyrics and songwriting are just as important as his guitar playing. An artist of the highest caliber whose music will always be in my rotation with a handful of other artists.

This song is a true masterpiece in both composition and performance. Mark Knopfler showed his true guitar genius even at the time of recording it in NYC (1980). The whole song is composed in 3 parts: the intro by Rodgers/Hammerstein "Carousel" waltz, the middle portion and the brilliant guitar solo at the end. What gave the magnificent texture to the solo is Mark's Schecter Strat guitar. The entire song is his ode to his childhood memories of going to a carnival with his parents... Now, get this: the words of the song are permanently etched in the concrete apron on the steps near the carnival location in Newcastle! An ultimate tribute to a virtuoso.

In case you didn't know, "Tunnel of Love" was a standard carnival ride -- cars on a track through a dark building, with occasional startling frights to cause the young couple to grab each other. It was an excuse for existing couples to smooch in private, and not-yet-couples to break the ice. The organ carousel music at the beginning is meant to invoke that carnival atmosphere.

Mark does this a lot through his songwriting and arrangements. For example, he wrote Speedway at Nazareth in the early 90´s, still Dire Straits back then. It never became a DS song but the track finally got there on his best selling solo album Sailing To Philadelphia. The track is building up quite litterally, the travelling from race track to race track, then the event is building up and about to start. The lyrics stop and the race starts, the atmosphere is building up to a climax, one more layer of excellent music, the white flag drops for the last lap.. the music stops suddenly and the race/song is over. He´s absolutely a genius on the guitar, but maybe even more as a songwriter/composer !

A perfect Sunday afternoon jam .. luv this & esp the way they end this one!! Gave me chills for some reason. Mark's smile melts my heart .. that is when u can catch his smile. His modest personality, playing style & coolness just makes him that much more appealing. He seems like a genuine man. Thnx guys .. great job. B safe & well .. peace out🤘🏼✌🏼💓

When you look at the concert history of Wembley Stadium at this time, it was remarkable that all bands you could see for $10. This was the same year as Live Aid, Queen the following year, Rolling Stones just before this concert, an endless number of great concerts. We Gen X teens had it made! When you see us as old folks in our chairs rocking our heads and smiling, we’ll be remembering the great bands we saw!

This show (Alchemy tour) was at the legendary hammersmith odeon.

@@TheCornishCockney Nah, this isn't from the Alchemy tour but the Brothers in Arms tour a couple of years later (Jack Sonni replacing Hal Lindes on rhythm guitar). It's not Wembley Stadium either but Wembley Arena where the band played 13 nights in a row. It was during this that Live Aid took place at the stadium. Dire Straits literally decamped across the car park to perform their set at the stadium and then went back again to play their concert that evening.

Great version of this song. Mark creates very emotive sounds on the guitar.

This song and performance is amazing but that outro solo is an absolute masterclass in playing and building a solo, the breakdown in the middle is so beautiful with just Mark playing gorgeous guitar.
