Love tiny things with a massive amount of attention to detail. I've carried a sub 3" knife for the majority of my adult live due to work restrictions. Always wanted a higher quality folder. Now that I work from home, there's lots of options. lol!

Pattern on the blade was perfect for the knife. The handle fits the knife too and looks great.

Hi Will, palaeontologist here. That's not a toe bone (which would be a phalanx or a metatarsal), that's a calcaneum (ankle bone). It's the bone that in humans forms the heel, because we walk on our whole foot rather than just our toes like other animals.

Nice blade, Will! The Dire Wolf and other species in North America were affected by a Meteor strike. It affected the Solutreans, too. In my opinion. 🤜🤛

Very nice work with such a cool bone as inspiration. The shape of the toe really lent itself to being a blade with the cutting edge being on the side you chose. A great natural finger hold and it matched the use of the original animals claw.

Something to think about next time if you use another porous material like this is to try and resin impregnate it in a vacuum chamber. That way it's a more solid material to work with. Might take some trial and error to figure out though.

Hey Will, just curious if the bone was stabilised. You did mention it during the video but I thought maybe epoxy resin in a vacuum chamber to draw the epoxy into all the voids and air pockets of the bone? As you said to strengthen it and stop the bone from crumbling later down the track. Just curious if or how you did it.
@viscache1
@viscache1 Жыл бұрын
You tend to use a lot of tools of modern blacksmithing so could probably use the one I find so helpful in the restoration of 17th C. furniture…a large vacuum chamber. You can mix your epoxies and submerge them in resin or epoxy and the vacuum will draw it into every gap, hollow, open pore and void and solidify the handle material and make it many times stronger throughout. When you sell to a customer you want them to get a lifetime of hard use out of your work.

Very cool. I don't think it's a toe bone though. Looks more like a calcaneus, one of the ankle bones which forms the point of the hock where the achillies tendon attaches, equivalent to a human heel bone.
