@Hilda Joana CG In the first sentence "Charlie" is the direct object because he is the person that is being left. Also "watch" is a direct object because that is what is being stolen. There is no indirect object in the first sentence. In the second sentence "grades" is the direct object because that is what is being given. "Edward" is the indirect object because it is to whom the grades are being given AND because it comes between the verb and the direct object. Hope this helps. Good luck on your exam!

in the example "twiggy wears her new jet pack around the house" is "her" an indirect object??
@neilhepworth69686 жыл бұрын
No. In this case the word "her" is just acting as an adjective that is modifying the words "jet pack". Also "her" does not answer the question "to whom" or "for whom". I can see why it might be confusing because it IS a noun between the action verb and the direct object, but in this case, "her" is just an adjective.
@akhilgupta80636 жыл бұрын
thanks :)
@akhilgupta80636 жыл бұрын
one more doubt as you told in order to find the direct object ,we think of " what is the thing being verbed" ex: "St. Mary"s elected Sarah president of the council" what is the thing being elected?? President is being elected or Sarah is being elected. which one is correct? From where i took this question, she explained that Sarah is the direct object.
@neilhepworth69686 жыл бұрын
In the example you provided, the direct object is Sarah because she is being elected. The words "president of the council" are what we call objective complements" because they rename or identify the direct object. However, that's a bit more advanced than what I teach my classes.

I didn''t undertsand why at 7:16 to Twiggy isn't indirect object . If i say : Caroline gives Twiggy the toy OR Caroline give the toy to Twiggy Caroline is the SUBJECT in both sentences , the toy is the DIRECT OBJECT in both sentences , and in italian grammar Twiggy remains INDIRECT OBJECT in both sentences TERM COMPLEMENT .
@neilhepworth69687 жыл бұрын
At 7:16 Twiggy becomes an object of the preposition because it follows the word "to" which is a preposition. It serves the same purpose as an indirect object, but the label is dependent on the placement of the word--an indirect object can ONLY come between an action verb and a direct object.
@jurisveratti44947 жыл бұрын
But is this particular rule just for english grammar ? in italian gramma Twiggy answere to the question "to who ?" TERM COMPLEMENT ..latin grammar it's DATIVE COMPLEMENT in german grammar it's DATIVE CASE ...anyway ,are we talking abaut the same things?
@neilhepworth69687 жыл бұрын
Hm. Good question. I don't really know non-English grammar very well...
@jurisveratti44947 жыл бұрын
LOL anyway i think that "Twiggy" or "to Twiggy" are both indirect object..the second sentece used a preposiotion to express it.

Why can't an indirect object be after the words "to" or "for"?
@neilhepworth696810 жыл бұрын
Because then the noun isn't a direct object, but an object of the preposition. The noun still serves the same basic function - but we treat it differently because of where it's placed.

Hey ! i have a question about '' to twiggy'' is it indirect object or prepositional phrase its function indirect object !? please answer Thank you
@neilhepworth69688 жыл бұрын
"to Twiggy" is just a prepositional phrase. Prep phrases only act as adjectives or adverbs and therefore can't act as an indirect object because an indirect object can only be a noun.

Thank you guys for your lessons, it was very helpful ! I have a question, please: We know that "Ditransitive" verbs need two objects, one direct and another indirect. In your lesson, you said that an indirect object may not follow the words "to" or "for", and if it does it'll be a part of a prepositional phrase. But my professor told us that the change in the position of the direct and the indirect objects is possible. He gave us the following examples: - John gives Mary flowers. => Jhon: subject => gives: verb => Mary: indirect object => flowers: direct object - John gives flowers to Mary => Jhon: subject => gives: verb => flowers: direct object => to Mary: indirect object Is this correct or not ?!
@neilhepworth69689 жыл бұрын
+PJNASAICSG Not that I want to argue with a college professor, however, while the meaning of the sentence stays the same, "to Mary" is a prepositional phrase. An indirect object is not determined by the meaning of the sentence, but how the sentence is constructed. For "Mary" to be an indirect object, the word needs to come between the object and the verb. If "Mary" follows the preposition "to" then "Mary" becomes an object of the preposition in the adverb prepositional phrase "to Mary." Hope this helps.
@pjnasaicsg36099 жыл бұрын
Well, I'll argue with him about this. Thank you so much for your clarification, Sir.

How would you diagram "Caroline gives the monkey toy to Twiggy"?
@neilhepworth69687 жыл бұрын
Close. "Monkey" is the direct object, but in this case "Twiggy" is just an object of the preposition "to." In order for "Twiggy" to be the indirect object, it would have to come between the verb "give" and direct object "monkey" like this: Caroline gives Twiggy the monkey toy.

in (Charoline garbs Twiggy's fur and luaghs) why "Twiggy's" is not Indirect object ?
@neilhepworth69689 жыл бұрын
+BesT GameR In this sentence "Twiggy's" is acting as a possessive noun which is treated like an adjective because it is describing the "fur". Also, "Twiggy's" is not the indirect object because the fur is not being grabbed "to" or "for" Twiggy.

You are correct. The underlined word "donated" is neither a direct nor indirect object. It is just the verb of the sentence. On the other hand, "wishbone" is the direct object for the verb "donated".

Thanks a lot. If we transfer the ind object to dir object , we have to put a preposition, we always put ( to or for). E.g/ The mother sent her daughter a message. -the mother sent a message to her daughter. My question is, in rare cases we put ( of or with) my question is What are the verbs that follow with ( of or with). Let me clarify it more but I will not give the right answer. E.g/ the mother sent her daughter a message. - the mother sent a message of or with her daughter. I want those verbs. Regards
