not really... india was never one country. we had 600 kingdoms. even tamil nadu was ruled by three dynasties for a long period (chera, chola, pandyas). when britishers entered india, the mughal empire was in decline. many of the princely states started to assert their freedom from the mughal rule. we were politically and administrative wise divided.

So, it is possible to acquire piece by piece. british took 200 years to create the massive indian empire, which they ruled for 200 years after creation. for example, tipu sultan was defeated by not only british but also by the marathas and the nizam of hyderabad. at that point in time for the marathas and the nizam of hyderabad, tipu sultan was a greater enemy.

@@softgrowl there was resistance...rani laxmi bai of jhansi, marudu brothers, poolidevan, etc. but creating a collective consciousness is not easy. even today we are a divided lot on language, religion and caste lines. gandhi managed to create a collective consciousness through the non-violence movement. violent attempts were largely local except for subash chandra bose's attempt by creating an army.
