I love the message of this song. When we are children, the monsters in our imaginations are stand ins for al the scary things in life that we don't quite understand yet. When we get older, we can stand up and shout those monsters down. Chanhyuk (the brother) is a brilliant song writer and his sister Sohyun has one of the clearest and most beautiful voices in the business.

from what i have understood they are referring to an actual happening with dept collectors or something actually coming to their house, which was traumatic for them as children. so the dinosaur is the scary adult attacking their family

@@laurainathunderstormi think the reason for them leaving wasn't that but their parents are missionary who went to mongolia so they lived there until they came to korea for kpop star audition

When the girl sings the high note whistle part, she kicks or punch her brother every performance. She was promised that they will nevr sing this live since the high notes are difficult ro sing by her brother. However, due to the song’s popularity, they had to perfome it live many times and each time she hits her brother for not keeping his words.

this song has a much deeper meaning. It's about when they were little and debt collectors constantly knocked on their door and yelled at their parents. Dinosaur represents the debt collectors. That is why in one of the lines, it says that their mom tells them to go in the room and turn up the tv so they don't have to hear. Which is also why they say that next time they will scream louder. As in the siblings will scream louder at the debt collectors. AKMU is known for word play and writing lyrics that are cute but can have multiple meanings. This is another example of this but a bit darker then the usual.

In my opinion, in this song, 'dinosaur' seems to symbolize debtors. Back in the days when four of us lived in a basement with mouse holes, saying "I occasionally dreamt of dinosaurs" meant that debtors appeared. My mother would turn on the TV for comfort. In the second verse, the mention of the dinosaur appearing to the parents and shouting can be interpreted as a symbol of demanding payment, like "making a noise to demand the money." When they say, "I'll make noise in the dinosaur later," it seems to mean, "I want to become wealthy so I don't have to go through such hardships." Listening to an AKMU interview, I remember that their family's economic situation wasn't good, so I think these lyrics metaphorically describe those experiences.

This song is so good and akmu have such a special place in my heart. The dinosaur is a metaphor from their childhood when debt collectors used to come and terrorize their home and family when they were really young. There family was really poor growing up in Korea so they moved to Mongolia when they were kids the cheaper living conditions, and missionary work.

They are siblings. The boy was only around 20 years old back then. He is the producer and songwriter at the same time. The little sister is a genius vocal. They sing this song live the same as they sing in the music video.

this is still part of my summer playlist! I personally also recommend their song "melted" the video and song are so sad and made me cry when first watching it. Also if i remembe right, this song was made with their difficult familysituation in their childhood in mind.

Although AKMU's "Dinosaur" may look like a cute and lighthearted song, it actually has a pretty heavy and deep story and message. AKMU is really good at telling stories with their music in a fun and quirky way that makes them extremely fun to watch and listen to, but when you look deeper, you will discover their songs often have a much bigger meaning or message. AKMU (pronounced like ack-moo -- like back without the b and moo like a cow), which is short for Akdong -- meaning siblings in Korean -- Musician are a brother/sister duo that write and compose all their own music. The older brother, Lee Chanhyuk, is the songwriter and composer, who you will often see and hear play the guitar in their songs, and his sister, Lee Suhyun, is the one who is the main vocal. All their songs are inspired by real life experiences and are almost all 100% created by them. That's why, if you get to know AKMU, you will discover their sound and style really is unique because they are different than the typical Kpop artists. (I kind of think of their music style as folk-pop.) Growing up Suhyun's and Chanhyuk's family was really poor and they were even homeless for a short time. (Their parents were missionaries and they lived in Mongolia for several years.) "Dinosaur" is based on their childhood and it's about how they have learned to overcome the pain and hardship of the things they went through growing up. The song is inspired by the nightmares Chanhyuk used to have as a child, which included dinosaurs. The "dinosaurs" represent the real debt collectors, who they were constantly afraid of, who would threaten them by smashing their things and destroying their home while demanding payment, etc. However, after discovering the "Loch Ness Monster" and realizing that those "dinosaurs" aren't as scary as they seem, they are able to conquer their fear and we see them living a more carefree life. When you see them scream at the world it is supposed to show how they are now taking control of the situation and they are no longer going to live in fear. AKMU got their start on season 2 of the Korean singing competition program Kpop Star, which is a little like American Idol for kids who want to become Kpop trainees. The founder of YG Entertaiment, the founder of JYP Entertainment and highly respected solo artist BoA from SM Entertainment were the judges on the show. Even as teenagers AKMU impressed everyone with their original songs and remix Kpop covers, eventually winning on Kpop Star and signing with YG Entertaiment. Suhyun was only about 14 and Chanhyuk was 16 at the time. They debuted in 2014, so they have been in the industry for about 9 years now and they are still only in their mid-20s. Now as famous singer/songwriters, they are supporting their family. After growing up poor, they no longer have to worry about money. Not only are they making money as Kpop idols, but as the one that writes almost all their songs, Chanhyuk also makes money from their song royalties. Plus, he writes and composes songs for other artists. If you like Suhyun's voice, if you haven't yet, you should check out some of her live performances on the Korean reality show Sea of Hope and another Korean TV program called Begin Again. Sea of Hope, which aired in 2021, was a show -- that also includes Onew from SHINee and several other well-known Kpop artists, actors and comedians -- that teamed up to run an outdoor beach bar. And because the cast of the show are all outstanding singers, they do live acoustic performances of songs for the entertainment at the bar. Some of the songs are songs they have rehearsed together earlier in the day, others are songs that the customers/audience request on the spot, and some are just songs the cast decide to sing spur of the moment. The cast of the show also have the job of being waiters and bartenders, who serve drinks and bring the audience food. The cast comes up with the menu and cooks the food on the show as well. The TV show that Suhyun participated in for 3 years prior to Sea of Hope was Begin Again, which featured singer/songwriter Kpop artists who teamed up to form a group and they spent several weeks busking all over Europe. In Begin Again, not only does the group sing the songs live, but several of the members are also musicians, so they perform the music live as well. In Begin Again you will see Suhyun perform with Henry -- who is considered a music genius that can play almost any instrument, and is known for his songwriting/composing and producing skills -- from SM's legendary group Super Junior, and several other famous Kpop solo musicians and singers as members of a group called The Family Band. This group was so popular that The Family Band actually did 2 seasons of the show. And the best part is, they busked on the streets all across Ireland, England, Switzerland, Portugal and Hungary, etc., so the people they performed for don't speak Korean, but they always fall in love with The Family Band's performances. And Suhyun and Henry also participated in a third season when they traveled around Korea to perform with some of their Family Band members, as well as other well-known Kpop musicians and artists. This show showcases real life busking performances with some of the best musicians and singers in the Kpop industry.

Dinosaurs are the debt collectors who came to their house when they were little. That’s why on the lyrics they said about how the dinosaurs broke their window and stuffs, cause the debt collectors did that to their house. Sad song for sure cause it’s based on their true story

The sibling duo AKMU shot at least four of their MVs on Okinawa, by my count, which is why they don't look like typical Korean locales. Last year I happened to stumble on the sister acting in a dramatic series on Netflix.
