Not only do they have a universe, they invented the trend. In 2012, EXO was the first group to create a storyline universe, before anyone else. BigBang launched the multi-album concept trend with their "MADE" series. They were the first group to extend a single concept or theme across more than one album. But EXO took things a step further and introduced the "Universe" where all of the visual content for their albums and songs are linked to a single story, starting at debut. The theme even appears in Super M music videos (a separate group that two members of EXO also belong to). Like all the other groups, (who began creating universe stories almost immediately) theirs is very complicated. But K-pop did not originally create the music storyline idea. It really started in the 70's with rock era concept albums from bands like The Who, Pink Floyd, and David Bowie. In recent times, Coldplay brought the idea back when they started the Mylo Xyloto storyline in 2011.

From what I remember, this MV was dropped before EXO performance at MAMA(Mnet Asian Music Award). After that, the member performed with the lightsaber during their dance break on the show. They also include it in their concert afterward. This is just from my memory, I don't remember this clearly, even if I am a fan.

They couldn't show a fight on a MV available to all ages, it was saved for the live performance. Asia has very strong rules about what can and can't be shown especially when it comes to their Idols who are revered by children as well as adults. Notice, for example, the lollypop rather than a cigarette. This is only a taster of the song, not the full thing. It was meant to get you wanting to go to the movie, it's a teaser for the movie. I hope you were joking while referring to Star Trek all the way through a Star Wars collaboration, but if by some slim chance you are actually in to such things, EXO have the most developed back story in Kpop.
