Oh actually you would be genuinely so impressed by Minho's military activity! He did his military service in the Marine Corps and was A MACHINE. Because Minho always likes a challenge, and is so competitive (hence the fiery charisma concept that fit him), Minho's mindset was that he knew it would be difficult, but since he had to go to the military anyway, he wanted to experience the challenge and went to the Marine Corps. He also apparently didn't take his final leave - here's a quote about how he turned down early discharge. “Breaks are the highlight of military life, but because of COVID-19, there were no longer breaks. Instead, we would be discharged early on our final leave. But if you get discharged early without returning to the base, you won’t be able to participate in the national drill. I really wanted to do that drill." Minho also received awards for excellence in his training. There's a lot more but I thought I'd give some brief info to show how intense Military Minho was.

Josh went to university in Korea for a year or 2 over a decade ago & he’s been a fluent speaker ever since. He met his Korean wife (who’s a Masterchef - not the US version - finalist/winner) a few years later at a Korean convention. Ollie tried to learn the language for a couple of years through Josh & another fluent Korean speaker but he never quite got the grasp of it. He understands most of it when people speak Korean but he can only say a few phrases. There’s a series where Josh lets Ollie travel alone in Korea with the caveat that he can only speak Korean to get to his final destination. It’s hilarious. The Korean Englishman channel is huge in Korea & the Korean tourism board as well as the government give them their full support (& sponsorships at times) which is why they get invited to interview American & British celebrities during movie press tours, why as foreigners they can get access into the military (the British boys weren’t the first, just the first into boot camp & the Navy) & they even got invited to a state dinner at Buckingham Palace with Blackpink when the Korean president was visiting the King in England. I think you’d enjoy exploring their videos as I have enjoyed watching your reactions to them.

Just so you know, when Olli said "small head charisma Minho" that wasn't that outrageous of a comment and anyone who knows Minho would totally understand why he would say that. Minho is very well known for having a very small face and large eyes. In Korean beauty standards, one of the first things people notice about Minho is how small his head is, which they say is one of the reasons why he is considered so attractive. The reason why it's such a big deal that Minho was in the Marines and not the Army is because the Marines in Korea are an elite branch of the military and it's considered a lot more intense and hardcore than the average Army soldier. Minho's training was extra intense and he even participated in training exercises with special forces soldiers who were career soldiers, not just serving their required 18 months. He was one of the leaders and a top member of his platoon. In case you were wondering, Josh -- the guy with the salmon colored shirt, the "Korean Englishman" -- and Ollie have become pretty big name KZbinrs and they have been producing Korean-based content on their Korean Englishman KZbin channel for probably more than 10 years now. They interview people from big name Hollywood actors like Will Smith, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Ryan Reynolds, etc. to sports stars like David Beckham and Kpop stars such as SHINee's Minho, Korean-American Kpop soloist Eric Nam, Henry Lau from Super Junior-M, Mark, Jaehyun and Johnny from NCT, etc. to regular people like their friends and family, whom they have made KZbin famous over the years. When Western actors come to Korea for press junkets to promote their latest movie or events they introduce them to Korean culture and food while doing their interviews. And over the years, as you have seen with their British high schoolers and British College Student serieses, they have brought their friends and family to Korea to introduce them to Korean culture, filming vlogs and videos of all the things they do while they are in Korea. However, on average, Josh and Ollie say they come to Korea for about a week to 2 weeks once a month, to film and do business, etc. As you heard, Josh spent time living and studying in Korea when he was young, and most of his friends growing up were Korean, so he gained a love for Korean Culture and he even earned a degree in Korean language at university. Josh and Ollie met while they were at university and became best friends. They started messing around posting videos online and eventually were able to turn it into a full-time career. (They also have a second -- just as popular -- KZbin Channel called Jolly, where they post content about food from all over the world.) They post videos on both of their channels every week. Josh's wife Gabbie is also Korean-British, and she is a professional chef who has won one of the seasons of Masterchef. And although Ollie isn't fluent in Korean, he actually understands most of what people say in Korean and he is proficient enough to be able to communicate with their Korean staff on his own, he just may not form perfect sentences all the time, but most Koreans can understand what he means when he speaks Korean. Ollie is the producer of the show that is often the one behind the camera and Josh is the content creator and main interviewer. Ollie is in charge of filming and editing and Josh is the one leading the show most of the time. Well, it was quite harsh of Josh to do that, but it was not for just “fun” but it was done in order to put Ollie in a survival mode so that his brain starts reforming which is called brain plasticity whenever you’re facing hardship or limit of your capabilities. And even though it seemed like Ollie was abandoned all alone, they were constantly watching over him just like a mama send her son to the quick errand alone for the first time and sneakily following him behind.

Josh's grandma is Chinese and he spent time in China as a kid. He struggled making friends in school, but some Korean kids took hin under their wing and the rest is history. Josh's wife Gabbie was the runner up in Korea's Masterchef! And on a side note, years ago I suggested a SHINee Jolly collab and it came true ❤

Oh i guess you didn't notice Josh helping to order food or translate in other episodes. XD He grew up in China due to his dad's work, and had a lot of Korean friends at the international school he attended there. He later went to college/uni in Korea. He met his wife Gabi Kook, who is Korean, at an event they were both helping out at (part time job). So yes, he's fluent. Gabi was the one who insisted they speak both English and Korean even when they're in the UK, so they don't lose command of either language. Ollie has been studying Korean for years. He's ok with the basics now, mostly, though not as fluent as Josh.

Ollie’s Korean learning journey is on a playlist on their Jolly channel, and on the Korean Englishman there’s a playlist called Ollie Alone in Korea that is absolutely hilarious and worth the watch. Josh is fluent, but Ollie understands more than he can speak. They’ve used various ways to learn, but Josh did a college semester in Korea, and Ollie has learned a lot from studying the Talk to Me in Korea textbooks.

Also, it can be more difficult to learn Korean from apps because the Romanization of Korean doesn’t really capture the phonetic sounds of the language. In English the letter “a” makes multiple sounds and is sometimes silent (like in “read”), but each Korean letter makes a specific sound, so it’s best to learn the Korean alphabet properly to learn correct pronunciation and use apps as a bonus. Actually, the Talk to Me in Korean books are pretty helpful because there are sound clips online, but I’m learning through a once a week class that uses a different textbook that teaches in a slightly different way. So I use both and watch KZbin videos on learning Korean and I can understand more every week. I also have a job that goes beyond the typical 9-5, but slow and steady learning still works, even when you’re busy. Just like your first day of bootcamp was difficult (and maybe even embarrassing in some ways), you have to just jump in and you’ll build strength and competence and confidence over time and after a while you’re amazed at what you can do. You can do it!

Josh is not only fluent in Korean but he can also speak Mandarin! He studied internationally when he was younger, and made a lot of Korean friends who took him in when he was the newbie. I believe his international school was in China... his grandfather was a British police officer in Hong Kong and married his wife there who was Chinese. His Korean friends taught him some of the language and about their food, and he went on to study languages in uni.

The funnies series is probably ALONE IN KOREA where they let Ollie figure out various situations on his own in Korean 😂😂 It starts with an Eric Nam video (single handedly one of the funniest videos on the Internet alone!) and it ends with Ollie trying to interview A-list Korean actors (Lee Byunghun included!). Just Ollie's existence on the Internet is one of the most peculiar things, for example: -- he let Mark Strong pick a name for his daughter -- the Isaac's toast saga 😭

Josh is fluent in Korean and Ollie understands most if not all of it. Ollie has a harder time speaking the language because Josh basically speaks for them (understandably) so he doesn't get to practice but in the "Alone in Korea" series, Ollie quickly picks it up and communicates with people in Korean. I remember one of the British boys mentioned in a video that they assumed it was just Josh but when part of the production team was speaking Korean, Ollie understands and replies in English. Ollie has a very strong accent but I think he also fully leans into the struggle in front of the camera for the entertainment value. When he speaks normally, his Korean is more intelligible.

He relies on Josh heavily since he’s fluent, but Ollie has been learning Korean and is actually pretty incredible at memorizing enough to get him by.
