This week I began my transition from the Creative Suite to Affinity after what seems to be a lifetime of using Adobe products (in fact since 1990's) Your perfectly clear and concise tutorials are making my transition absolutely seamless and I have learnt to use so many tools during this single tutorial. I would like to second the previous comment 'This is the best tutorial I've ever watched' Your voice, pace, and video editing is perfect for me (I am UK based) and I would love to see Affinity use you as a permanent trainer for all of their products. Thank You so very much for sharing these.

I’d just like to add (I hope this helps someone) that I have recently purchased a set of keyboard shortcut labels for my Elgato Stream Deck XL from a company called sideshowfx (I have no affiliation with this company) I have used this companies Elgato shortcuts for all my Adobe Products in the past as the Elgato Stream Deck (btw I have no affiliation with this company at all) has proved such a great time saving tool. I use a Huion GT-221 pro drawing tablet/screen and getting to the top menu is difficult as the screen/tablet is standing at an angle on my desk, using the Stream Deck on my right is an invaluable time saver for all of the many many keyboard shortcuts.

@@ArtistWright Ooooh I have a question for you, perhaps for a later video? On the DJ wheel thing, you have the conical gradient to emulate a knob with knurled concentric rings on the surface. I tried to add actual concentric circles each half a mm wider than the previous, but couldn't work out how to do it without lots of manual transformations. Ctrl-J expands by a percentage/ratio as opposed to literal amount, as does move/duplicate (as a scale percentage rather than a fixed amount). If you could include it (if it's possible) in a future video, I'll be sure to see it :)
@ArtistWright8 ай бұрын
@pdrg hi there, thanks for watching! Im not quite sure what you mean. I tried googling knurled concentric rings but it just shows diamond patterns on metal knobs. What should I Google to see what you want to create?

If you are wondering if you will learn anything from this video, the answer is Yes! I followed the video over 4 days, 45 minutes per day and we used about 80% of the affinity designer tools. I highly recommend this video and this channel if you are interested in learning the affinity suite.

I'm a fairly experienced Affinity user, but I learned a lot from this video. THANK YOU for being so clear and explicit. However, I miss the subtitles/closed-captions. When you say, "I press 'ee on the keyboard," it's difficult to tell if you said, D or V or T or B or any other letter ending in the "ee" sound. Subtitles/closed-captions would clear this up. The latest versions of several video editors make creating these very easy.

Just another excellent tutorial. As mentioned before, you teaching skills are second to none. I learned a few new things which I definitely will be using in my designs and graphs for my book. One thing I want to mention and I guess this applies to many international viewers of your tutorials. Although I run the Affinity Apps in English, my keyboard is German (yes...I am dutch :-) I do not have the bracket keys on my keyboard. I think that this applies to all other language keyboards who have special characters. Perhaps it is good so mention which command the bracket key is or where to find it in the shortcuts settings so we know where to find it... Shortcuts are always the issue in tutorials, which does make it from time to time difficult to follow :-) Else...I left you comment on some other tutorials I would like to see... Vanishing grids would be great...another one would be detailed one in brushes and brushwork. Thank you and keep up the excellent work.. Cheers, -. Hendrik
@ArtistWright8 ай бұрын
Thanks again Nordic! Yes that bracket key issue is a tad annoying. I actually had no idea about that until someone mentioned it to me recently. I will have to work on that if I ever bring that shortcut up again. Also thanks for the tutorial ideas. I do have a big list and will attack each one when I can. Thanks again

OMG! Thank you, thank you, thank you!!! Can you make another one with a focus on audio and music production plugins’ UI? (As an example check“SSL console by Plugin-Alliance”)
@ipoponq4 ай бұрын
I mean this DJ ui is focused on shapes, but then a struggle would be: 1) how to apply texture and create different plastic, matte, rubberized fader caps and knobs. 2) any easy ways to add dirt, stretches to BG and ui elements? Any easy way to create an audio gear bg (like rack panels with analog audio compressors or recording consoles have) 3) how can I export a png sprite sheet for knobs and faders, where they are combined into a long vertical png, starting from the first image with fader cap at the button and ending with it at the top. Last but not least, I struggle to draw a button in its pressed state, because that’s what usually app developers want.
@ArtistWright4 ай бұрын
Thanks for your response. I loved making this tutorial. I chose to base it on this subject as there was alot of opportunity to showcase alot of the tools in Affinity Designer. I see the SSl console you mentioned and it has very similar 'shapes' that appear in my tutorial.
@ArtistWright4 ай бұрын
In response to your points. 1)any textures you add you would need to clip inside of the shapes. so if the top of the knob is metal, go ahead and clip your metal texture in that knob layer. 2) you can use brushes to paint in dirt (see my illustration tutorial on creating an orange, same deal) 3) set your background to transparent in document setup colour tab and export to png. Drawing a button in a pressed state from what I see there is a slight change in colour, the shadow isn't as long and the height of the button is reduced. Alot of the plugins I've seen are always drawn at a slight angle to ensure it's obvious if a button is pressed in or not. And the light is coming from one direction (which gives you an idea of height with the shadows. You need to ensure all the states of pressed and unpressed are consistent across the design.

and what is the purpose of bake appearance??
@ArtistWright8 ай бұрын
AHH I should have said that, I've mentioned it so many times on other videos I must have thought I did it already. So basically if you use the corner tool on a square for instance, if you scaled that up or down, the corner curvature will not look the same. So in order to keep it looking exactly how you want it, you press bake appearance. Try and scale it without baking appearance and you will see what I mean

I like the price of Affinity software compared to Adobe, but the lack of identical functions compared to Illustrator makes design and production absolutely maddening. For example, where is the stroke/fill key command to switch between them (it's the letter X in Illustrator)? The lack of commonsense key commands makes this software an absolute headache.
@ArtistWright7 ай бұрын
It's x to switch between them. Check out my shortcuts video for affinity Designer.
