I'm 50 now. I've been hearing this song since I was a little kid. I didn't realize for so many years that this song is a masterpiece. The guitar work is amazing and flawless. The vocal sound from Mark fits perfectly with the mood the instruments create. Having a band that tight behind the lead guitar work of Mark, makes it perfection. There's no repetitions in the song. It's a complete story from the start to the end.

My parents were in their teens when they had me, so I was raised on 70s Classic Rock vinyl. My dad cherished his collection, pampered it, lol. I went into a record store looking for something country-type, the manager told me that they didn't have anything like that, while I was looking for something that caught my attention, They played Sultans of Swing by Dire Straits, immediately upon hearing it I said to myself, “I want it”, I love it, from that day to date I have followed and bought everything that Mark Knopfler has done, his way of playing the guitar fascinates me, his style is immediately recognizable, it is unique.

There is a difference between being able to play an instrument, and being able to make it instrument sing. Mark is one of the few that can bring out their voice.
There's a reason Fender came out with a Signature Strat for Mark. His sound is unique. He originally taped switches in the middle of their normal maintained positions to create that sound. He's a true virtuoso.

@Yeshuah757 He couldn't believe the audacity of the jazz band.. They were playing in a dive bar to an audience of 4 people.. This song is timeless. For 40 years I’ve heard DS and it still sounds brand new every time. As a musician, I can recognize the god status of these musicians. I think I’ll listen one more time. Other-worldly.
I brought the cassette tape home and pushed play. My Dad who was born in the 20's immediately keyed in on the band. He couldn't get over the guitar and I would come home and he would be in my stereo room with this blasting on Max LOL!!! Miss ya Dad, will ALWAYS think of you when this song comes on - that's your way of saying Hi, I know it!!! ♥

@alanhuffbass8 жыл бұрын
The problem with singing and playing is not about the chords, it's all abouth RYTHM. The right hand is what matters. If you pay attention, John Butler is always fingering a fast and repeated pattern when he's singing, except for a slower riff at some point. Nothing different than what Mark Knopfler is doing. They're both great musicians. Talent? I'd say it's more about practice till perfection. Also, Mark is left-handed but his right hand is incredible. Peace.
