Lyrics:
a lovestruck romeo sings a streetsusss serenade
laying everybody low with a lovesong that he made
finds a convenient streetlight steps out of the shade
says something like you and me babe how about it?
juliet says hey it’s romeo you nearly gimme a heart attack
he’s underneath the window she’s singing hey la my boyfriend’s back
you shouldn’t come around here singing up at people like that
anyway what you gonna do about it?
juliet the dice were loaded from the start
and i bet and you exploded in my heart
and i forget i forget the movie song
when you gonna realise it was just that the time was wrong juliet?
come up on different streets they both were streets of shame
both dirty both mean yes and the dream was just the same
and i dreamed your dream for you and now your dream is real
how can you look at me as if i was just another one of your deals?
when you can fall for chains of silver you can fall for chains of gold
you can fall for pretty strangers and the promises they hold
you promised me everything you promised me thick and thin
now you just says oh romeo yeah you know i used to have a scene with him
juliet when we made love you used to cry
you said i love you like the stars above i’ll love you till i die
there’s a place for us you know the movie song
when you gonna realise it was just that the time was wrong juliet?
i can’t do the talk like they talk on tv
and i can’t do a love song like the way it’s meant to be
i can’t do everything but i’d do anything for you
i can’t do anything except be in love with you
and all i do is miss you and the way we used to be
all i do is keep the beat and bad company
all i do is kiss you through the bars of a rhyme
julie i’d do the stars with you any time
juliet when we made love you used to cry
you said i love you like the stars above i’ll love you till i die
and there’s a place for us you know the movie song
when you gonna realise it was just that the time was wrong juliet?
a lovestruck romeo sings a streetsuss serenade
laying everybody low with a lovesong that he made
finds a convenient streetlight steps out of the shade
says something like you and me babe how about it?

This song holds more meaning for me than anyone could imagine. I was with my significant other for almost 30 years. We had separated, lived apart for a couple of years, still seeing each other almost everyday. By chance we ended up back together and it was so beautiful that we had a chance to fall in love all over again until after being 12 years in remission, he ended up with fatal brain cancer and was given not even 4 weeks to live. He graciously lived for over 5 more months and yet even being bed ridden and paralyzed on one side, my children and I were by his side. We all were blessed to have that time with him and he was so happy even considering the circumstances. He passed away and I was there for every moment including his last breath. There was a time long ago when he said to me... "You and me babe, how bout it? "... This song is so precious to me and I'll never forget those words. When this song appears in my feed, knowing I'm going to cry like a baby , I have no choice but to listen... Scott, you made my life complete. I miss you so much. Even though you've been gone for 2 and a half years already, it's fresh like it was yesterday. I'll forever hold our memories deep in my heart and remember your last breath you were still trying to say I love you even though you couldn't speak. I miss you so very much. Maybe one day we'll be together again. I'll forever be about you babe. Always and forever until we meet again my love... Thank you to whomever took the time to read this. Our love is forever and Romeo and juliet do truly exist. ♥️

Thank you for sharing such an amazing and deeply touching part of your life. Even though your story had an emotional impact on me, , it also echos how much I am in love with my better half, best friend, lover and wife. I am thankful every day for her choosing to share her life with me. I hope everyone who reads your story and my little reply, can take a moment to appreciate that someone is out there for all of us. If you found that someone, take a moment each day to let them know how much you care about them. Use any of the 5 love languages (yes it works) to convey your love. 💓 It makes a difference to them and makes you a better version of yourself, which also feels fantastic. 🤩 Give it a try if you don't believe me and see what happens. 😉

Is that your interpretation too? I just had a breakup that I felt would be the one ... and the lyrics seem to point in that direction for me too. The most obvious part would be "just that the time was wrong" since she currently has so much in her life that she had no time for a relationship. The music video points in the direction of them moving on rather than getting back together though- what you think about the songs lyrics?

This is the perfect song about longing. I listened to it in the back of my dad's car when I was a kid, longing to grow up and understand and feel how song described. As a young man, it described how I longed for the women that I loved and lost. And now I watch it and miss the young man I was, and what it felt like to be young, to be in love, and have my heart broken. It's so bittersweet - beautiful and sad, makes me nostalgic and also connected to each period of my life. It feels so personal, yet when I read all the comments here, I realise I'm just one of many that feels that way.

Petra Europe very well said. Word for word my thoughts😌 Such a beautiful song - a simple melody, interspersed with whimsical guitar licks, like little flights of fancy. The music light but the subject heavy. (I met my wife at 15 and had a weird thought that We’d end up together, but one of us was always in a relationship. It wasn’t until 23 that we were both free at the same time, and we married at 26.💟☮️

You will never know the magic of that era. We were bombarded with hits songs day after day by outstanding artists like this. So much in fact we got jaded and did not appreciate the time we were living in. When I go back and listen now the music we had, it is astonishing because nothing like that exists now. I am so grateful to have experienced that chunk of time that artists actually created beautiful music.

The old saying… “it is better to have loved and lost… I believe this is true. I believe that we can know love is real and everlasting because we have both received and given it. I am sorry for that loss. I think that we disdain death so much because we know it does not belong. To be born again, we must die. When faced with the prospect, let us all walk, or run, to Love, Life, and Light, so that we may see each other again.

There’s something slightly magical about the fade out on this song. I’m 44 years old, but whenever I watch this now, by the time the song is fading out I am right back to being that 12 year old boy in the mid-80’s, watching it with the lights off in my bedroom on my small portable television, playing from a beat up old VHS player clunking away a pirated copy I recorded from VH1, and with my old CB radio crackling away from under my bunk-bed. It’s like a time-machine, yet timeless in itself.

I've always thought that the closing guitar solo's call and response notes starting at 4:53 were a depiction of the two star-crossed lovers and the wonders of their shared young love, but these hypnotizing notes and their echoes rather portray an entitled Juliet's slow, and unsympathetic stroll down the road of fame, and away from poor Romeo, forever...

@@knojohn8787 Nope, you are right. Music is fundamental to the existence for some of us, and with modern technology there is no reason why you shouldn't be enjoying it for hours every day. It turns a bus journey or commute into a pleasure. For postmen and similar jobs there is music all day, and for anyone whose jobs were once solitary and boring there is now a huge world of your favourite music and the opportunity to get into music you may have thought was not to your taste. With so much time to listen, we can try anything. For those of us who've been enjoying music for 60 or 70 years we are now so lucky that we don't have to turn on a hifi and select a record; instead we can simply pop on the headphones, select one of thousands of albums and away we go, and the quality of sound can be extraordinarily good, in some cases to match the best hi-fi systems available. I really love your statement: 'I just can't live without music any more'. To people like us, life without music would be empty and colourless.

I grew up in Hungary, Central Europe, in the 90's that was post-communist, expecting a lot from America and itself at the end of the cold war. I grew up on this song blasting from my grandad's radio while I played football with my cousin in the yard, surrounded by the flowers my grandma planted. It was such a special time. We thought everything was possible and we only needed to reach for the sky. I'm living in the US now, but no feeling is as sweet as dreaming away in 90's Hungary, thinking that the world was my oyster.

Nearly 20 years ago I introduced my wife to this song. She was getting her PhD at Penn State and we were driving on Colonnade Drive in State College. She was having a bad day so I put it on, unaware she hadn't heard it. She was so enraptured we listened to it twice more and I told her about Dire Straits and how Mark Knopfler was in it (she knew Sailing to Philadelphia, as I played it often). We had met in California, and last year on Easter Sunday she passed away from cancer in our home in Nashville just after she turned 40. My memory of this song is pulling at my guts, remembering how it made her so happy. I wish I could play it for her tonight. I miss you, Sarah Jane.

First love, appreciation of music in general and guitar and song writing abilities. Thing started to make sense to me.. my ‘Juliet’ lasted 4 years, and has always had a special place in my heart.. even to this day I think “the time was wrong”.. I thank Mark Knopfler for his talent, and the memories his music helps keeps alive..

This song brings me such feelings of calm. I'm 32 and this is the sort of music I live for. Timeless perfection 💜

A trip on the train to my Grandpa's funeral, devastating 35mn with Dire Straits' music on... Thx it helped even though it's still hard; music is THE language, the universal one, the only one anybody can relate to.
